Who's Who?
« on: December 30, 2010, 07:53:09 pm »

I hope this is the right place for this, it is feedback. I was playing Team Deathmatch tonight and there's something I've always noticed when playing Team games on Goldeneye Source, and that is people on the same team always shooting at each other. I must admit I shoot my team members quite often but until you place your target on them you can't really tell. The worst moment is when there's a lot of people in one area, there's no way to immediately spot the enemy in amongst all the players. So here's my idea, the players could have coloured Arm Bands to indicate team colour, this would make them immediately visible on sight and take away any confusion for the player.

Another idea for the Radar is some kind of indication as to whether the player is on your level or above/below you. If on your level the circle would be filled in as normal, but if the player is above/below the circle could be hollow.

Those are great ideas man, but unless I'm mistaken, teams in Team Deathmatch are usually split up between MI6 and Janus characters.  As for players on different levels, I think that's indicated by triangles.

We are going to be investigating a way to DISCRETELY add some teammate cues into the game for the next patch.

The reason why its not in already is because its just not right to color teammates, make them glow, put huge fucking sign above their head. It's all very non-goldeneye.

HOWEVER, yes we agree there is a substantial issue with the whole teammate thing and it will only get worse when we add more player models into the mix. Anything we do add will come with an option in the Advanced Options to disable it so that you can retain nostalgia.

I agree, it would look stupid if things were floating above people's heads. It needs to be discrete whatever you decide on, but I reckon the arm bands would be worth thinking about, they needn't be loud and brash, just a small textured band around each arm to indicate what team the player is on.

Hey, maybe they could where comedy boxer shorts over their trousers... ha ha.

Maybe it would be better to reduce the number of models used for teamplay to a subset of what's available for FFA, and pick models that can fit together visually, like how ST6/SAS/GIGN/GSG9 models are all in the black/blue/olive area, and Phoenix/Leet/Rambo/Arctic are all in the black+white/beige area. No idea what models are in the pipeline, but something along the lines of black/blue for MI6 and grey/olive for Janus seems feasible.

Alternate teamplay skins for some or all of the models seems like the best solution, but also seems like a lot of extra work.

LOL

I like how when i post the same exact thing, I get VC on my thread telling me to "learn how to distinguish the difference between human beings".

I am glad that this is in the pipeline for the next patch though.

Funny stuff.

I am nostalgia'ing for all the wrong reasons. I brought this up once before, and even had an idea. I'm just going to quote my old post to make it easier.

Quote from: JcFerggy
Playing I notice alot of people misjudge who is on their team and who they are supposed to be shooting at in any team mode. This is mainly because all the characters look different, and there is no unifying feature of the characters other than their role they play in the game/movie. I know that NightFire also did this, but it sorta worked since there was only 4 people playing, and you know that Billy was on your team, while Zack and Joe were the "bad guys".

Through time tho, this problem will only expand with the addition of new characters, more faces to remember, and eventually it will get to the point where we are making back stories for characters explaining their alliance to Janus or MI6.

What I propose is the classic Red vs. Blue. We can still call them Janus and MI6 respectfully, but it will help identify who you are shooting, and who is against you. Another thing that would come from this is there could be 2 people playing on opposite teams, using the same character.

Here is Boris, who I just messed with the hue in Photoshop. Even though its just a concept, I could see this really helping players want to use teamplay more.

The general response at the time was that people expect certain characters to look a certain way, but when gameplay gets larger, there needs to be a way to tell differences. The idea of arm bands was thrown arounds via Perfect Dark style, or another suggestion was a icon above team members heads.

I still like the colored skins idea just because then a person can choice from all characters in team servers.

My idea is a discrete floating name tape above teammates heads that shrinks with distance so it doesn't take up your entire screen and disappears after a certain distance.

Reasons:

1. Replaces the shitty HL2 mouse over and see name + info
2. Identifies a teammate because only they have floating names above their heads
3. Identifies your teammate easily so you can shout at them by name over mic
4. I could also work in a HP/AP display as well

Trying to keep clutter down is the problem, most likely there would be a min/max range for the name to show up and it would scale with distance as I said above. The name could even be a color range from blue to red showing how much relative health they have

I mentioned that anything we did happen to implement, you could turn off in Advanced Options.

I still feel that people who ask for this are not hardcore enough.

If you play for even a week you should be getting intuitively good at remembering what character you chose and what category of team the rest of that team's list is, and not shoot them or at least use the current mouseover trick on EVERYONE you see so its a quick hit way before firing, of determining. Also radar is pretty easy to understand? We have documentation everywhere we can about this stuff.

I feel that doing the memory work, or using the mouseover 'tell' or radar, is at least gaining my respect of you as a player. You earned your stripes doing it the thorough way as opposed to being spoon-fed implementations that basically keep you as a simple-noob-player even longer in the community. Because basically you have to think less and immerse yourself less if you get all things given to you automatically.

Our best players are the guys who never complained about LALD before it had a help display and just kept looking for ways to understand and subtle cues (or just the obvious thing research it on our wiki??). Not the ones that couldn't understand and raged and demanded we need to explain it better. No offense.

No one will ever be top 50 in our mod that relies on an icon over friendlies heads. Just as no one will be actually good deep in their own mind if they used a dot on the screen instead of being a REAL pro at our system of no static Xhair.

OK, here's the scenario I was in last night, I was on Casino and there was roughly 6 or 7 players all gathered in one area, Someone turned and started shooting at me, and my response was to start shooting back of course, by the time the name had appeared it was already too late and I got shot by a non member. I believe it is necessary to implement something, but i think there's already too much text on screen, It just looks untidy.

Right now, everyone is on the same plane: he who knows what people look like (can you tell Heavy Weapons Guy from Demoman?) will be slightly faster on the trigger.

If you tie colored balloons to everyone's belts, then you simply train yourself to open fire on people who don't have teammate balloons tied to their belts.  At that point, we may as well remove all but two of the models because you have just gutted the game of any significance and personality that model selection could have imparted.

If i remember correctly, in beta1 we had Bond vs Ouromov for teamplay modes.
IMO it's far better to have at least a few different character models available for each team.
Since we're talking about only 11 distinctable playermodels in 4.1 it's not to much of a burden to remember which one is on which team.
