Black Ops for PC
« on: November 10, 2010, 01:27:55 am »

Anyone that got the game for PC got major lag spikes on multiplayer servers?
Its simply horrible, I should have listened. "This game is going to suck." My friend said.

Are Infinity Ward still going for the 'disallow dedicated servers so that people have no control over what maps they play and can't create custom content so we can charge extortionate prices for map packs re-releasing old maps from previous COD titles and force everyone through inconvenience to get them' thing?

I think I'll pass.

You can rent servers, but players can't connect by IP. Not all servers show up in the browser. So for a lot of people, you can't even join the server you're paying for. Essentially a $15/mo donation to a server farm, then go play on servers at random.

* Yes, this is real.

I've got it for PS3, and runs great. I got sick of console ports for PC, so I just moved to console.

I haven't heard anything about that, I know you can't connect to an IP like you could in older CoD titles, But not being able to connect to your own server?
I hope they fix this soon.

No actually Black Ops was developped by Treyarch this time.
Many important IW employees quit or got fired. So Infinity Ward pretty much disbanded.
There are dedicated servers, But for the old maps, So far no news.

Agreed, But I hate consoles for three things.
Peer to peer connection
Age of players

If you look on Steam, there are hundreds of posts about people complaining they can't play. And as my good friend The Derr Man said, people with i7 quad cores and heaps of RAM can't even play.

How could they possibly release a game in this state? The demand for this game was huge and they would want it to get out on time. See, if they pushed the release date back, people would be complaining about that too. Kind of a lose/lose situation here.

Mijy has the PS3 version and he says that it is lagging too. He also says it is like World at War (I think that is code for run awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy)!

PS: I sound like your friend :P

I liked World At War, Especially the ambience in it, Destroyed buildings, Reichstag, All that, I love WWII history.

And yeah, I totally agree with the fact that they released this game too soon, I was pointing that out earlier on vent as well, But Activision just push Treyarch too much to release it ASAP without having time to properly test it.

When MW2 came out, I couldn't play it on my old ATI 4870. I would drop to 5 fps when I saw a player. Something to do with both ATI and the textures in MW2. Soon as I bought a new GPU, worked perfect. So might have to wait for a patch or drivers for your card. Keep a eye on the Steam forums and see if a fix is found.

Yeah I have an ATI 5670 but my friend which has an NVidia card (Not sure which model though but I know it runs well) also has the same issues, Everyone does.
But yeah, There should be a patch soon that fix all of the current issues.

EDIT : I just read that the issues come from the game only using one CPU at a time instead of "Insert number of cores you currently have", And not using the graphics card resources properly.

Isn't it using a Quake 3 descendent engine? All the other CoD games have so far. I'm expecting it's built off the same engine as MW2, they're not going to throw together a new game engine in the space of a year for a sequel.

I think it's Treyarch's CoD 5 engine with technology from the CoD 6 engine (like streaming textures) which is based on the Infinity Ward CoD 4 engine which is based on the Doom 3 engine (which is where they got the sweet realtime lighting system from)

So they're basically piggybacking on everyone's technology to produce their shitty games, which you would think would give them more time to make the game awesome but they instead decide to copypasta all their ideas, assets, and gameplay from one year to another.

I still think the Doom 3 engine was the shit. It didn't take because, at the time, required immense system to run it properly. Now that everyone has a balls deep computer, it is catching up to technology and is being utilized more and more. At least the core technology is.
