Novint Falcon support?
« on: January 23, 2010, 06:18:15 am »

I'll start out saying that this by no means needs to be a priority. I've had a little time with the beta 3 and am loving it. GoldenEye 64 is bar non my favorite FPS of all time and seeing it's reincarnation is awesome. I was just curious if the Falcon was a possibility.

I didn't actually know about this mod until a few days ago. But being a Falcon user I always want support with Source mods. After learning about GoldenEye: Source I brought it up on Novint's new forums and Tom Anderson (Novint's CEO) said he was willing to share their source of Source for Falcon support. What that all entails I'm not entirely sure but there's an invitation.

Looks like a SERIOUS sex toy with a pistol grip.

I read about the falcon before, you can forget about getting support for it anytime soon unless I get a free one...

Heh, I figured as much. Thank you for the quick answer. I'll have to see if Tom can get you one. Obviously, no promises.

Yup, that's it. Nice one kraid.

Hey guys, I'm Novint's CEO, tomnovint (Tom Anderson). Burger is one of our strongest members, and I highly respect his opinion, so it would be no problem to get you a Falcon and full source code access to integrate Falcon support if you're interested. It shouldn't be too much work - usually is a very quick integration when you have source access. We can advertise to our community as well. You guys should search the internet for reviews and for people who have one. It is compelling ;). plz email me at tf2contest[at]novint[dot]com if you're interested in it. thx, tomnovint

haha, hi Tom! Yah the review I read (belive it was Tom's Hardware) was favorable except that it was such a large departure from a mouse that the learning curve was a little large, however intuitive.

It looks interesting, we can discuss this further once Beta 4 is out the door, although it would be nice to hear how many HL2 users have this and like it :)

Hi, thanks for joining the forums to express your interest!

Definitely this is a chance and something we would explore with you. Likely the free/demo falcon would be going to killermonkey (post above) since he is our lead coder, and would have to be sent some premier beers too in order to muster the will to integrate the support.

I have always gotten a kick out of that HID.  There of course is one question in my mind, is this better than a mouse?

Doing recoil for weapons and hit damage bumps would seem logical in a single player game but at the same time a handicap for multiplayer.

Control wise it's not worse than a mouse. The way the Falcon controls is not the way a mouse works though. It's more like a mouse/joystick hybrid. The mouse part is done within a virtual box. Moving the grip left/right and up/down is the same as moving a mouse left/right and forward/backward. The box size can be made bigger of smaller depending on preference. Along with that the aim sensetivity within that box can be raised or lowered. A large box (even with high sensetivity) requires more movement so it can be compared to a mouse with lower sensetivity. A small box (which is what I use) requires little movement and can be compared to a high senetivity. Adding to that a high aim sensetivity and it's really no different that a high end gaming mouse. The real difference has to do with aiming and turning. Aiming is done within the box so you do things like you would expect with a mouse. Coming to the edge of the box you run into resistant walls. The harder you push against the walls the faster you turn. The amount of resistance can be adjusted so it can be easier or harder to push against. The rate at which you turn also can be sped up or slowed down. As far as controls go there is a lot to tweak to find what works. There's really nothing a mouse can do that the Falcon can't with control.

As to recoil and damage forces, I think the level of disruption varies on how high you have the forces set. For TF2 (the game I play most) I have mine about 1/4-1/3 what it's capable of and it's still enough to get a feel for what the Falcon is. There's a lot of settings control so getting it right can take some time. I've found that most of the trouble goes away with practice. I personally love the damage forces as it helps me know when I'm getting hit. I know there are sound and visual cues but the nudging from the attacking direction has helped my reaction time a bit. The recoil forces are just fun for me, there really isn't a whole lot else to that. And being that a play a lot on Engeneer I love when cloked Spies run into me. Hard to miss them when you feel them brush past. They hate me.

Novint Falcon support would be a cool implementation in the future for sure, all of Valve's Source games have support for it so from what I understand it wouldn't be too difficult.

I don't think there are any mods out there who do support it, are there? It would probably attract a few Falcon users to trying out the mod at the very least.

That's correct. There really aren't that many Source mods that support it. It makes sense really. A lot of that has to do with the fact that not many working on mods have a Falcon. And you can bet they'll try it with Falcon support. The GoldenEye name alone has several of them interested. We're always ready for another game to play.

Hey,

I was actually in charge of UI implementation for the Falcon in HL2 (the options menu)
If any devs are interested in support let me know and I can speak to my friends at Novint.
