Hosting a New Server/ What modes do you all prefer?
« on: May 14, 2017, 06:23:55 pm »

Hello ladies and Gentleman. I am in such love with this game that I have decided to host a dedicated server, I really want to be able to appease all that play on it so I was wondering what you all prefer or enjoy. Any gamemodes, weaponsets, maps or custom content that you would like to see on the server please shoot me a message or simply comment here.

GE:S definitely needs more deathmatch-based modes servers, so anything like DM, TDM, MWGG, VTAK would be good. Some LTK and CTF is always good to have too. Can't really recommend on custom content as I just prefer the original maps unless those customs are really top quality and not ports from other games.

NO Arsenal, No Turbo, No LTK - plenty of those servers already lol...

Would love to see more rotating servers active that have TDM, MWGG, etc. - but especially CTF. My favorite mode and I get to play it like once a month right now for a single round...

Map voting plugin that interfaces with our intelligent map chooser:
http://team.gesHL2.com/serverplugins/GESMapChooserV3.zip

Convenience plugin replicating a new feature in 5.1 that sets the weaponset back to random_loadout when you explicitly change it.  It's pretty basic and -always- does this, so if you actually have an interest in running the same weaponset multiple rounds in a row then it's a tradeoff.

As for maps/gamemodes we usually put releases we recommend in this forum:

The biggest recommendation I have though is to spend lots of time on your server and try to build a community.  It might not be easy at first, but if you make people feel like they're a part of your group then eventually you'll hit critical mass and keeping the server going will be super easy after that.  A ton of people seem to get servers but don't really make that investment pay off by building a playerbase for them.  GE:S has plenty of servers, but would benefit immensely from another community.

If there's ever anything else I can do to help out feel free to get in touch with me via PM/discord!

I am quite surprised on how fast i got responses. I cannot express the gratitude for your suggestions and ideas. Entropy-Soldier, are there any other plugins that would greatly benefit the server as a whole? I mean, i am trying to understand what drives people to continuously come back to a certain server. I understand that have a friendly and respectful atmosphere does help.

WFCxLima- I plan on putting only the classic modes in rotation. I honestly think people miss those great modes. Perhaps have arsenal or LTK play once every 5 mode rotations. I think having constant change in modes is a good thing.

Just be sure to have a functional sourcemod setup with RTV and the like, run GE:S 5.0.1, and that should be enough to get you started.  You'll no doubt want to experiment more as time goes on and that's a good thing!  Just try not to go overboard and you'll be fine.  The biggest thing is always to just build an inclusive atmosphere that people want to be a part of.

There's one Medal of Honor: Allied Assault SpearHead server in particular that I've been playing on for 12 years.

It's dead all day, but at night, the server owner and 3-4 regulars are ALWAYS there, 5-7 days a week. Then 6 or 7 more people will come and go throughout the night, with a solid population of 7-10 people on for a few hours - all for a game that is almost 17 years old and down to a few hundred left that play even monthly.

I think that's a big part of that building a "community," the server doesn't have to be populated all the time, but if it's populated consistently at a critical time - like, for example, 8 to 11 p.m. 6 days a week - you'll find you'll build a reliable group of people who enjoy the server and, over time, will start to log on during that window and "expect" it to be populated, and even when it isn't, they will sit there as a 1/16 and wait for the "regulars" to join, because they know it's a consistently fun server and it's worth spending 10-20 minutes sitting there by yourself to build it up.

When you've reached that point, you're a success - doesn't have to be 21/21 all the time; a regular group of 5-10 people who play often together at a consistent time is a pretty awesome server that will attracted others to it.

The other element, aside from the consistency/personal time to put in to ensure your server is populated regularly, is exactly what you asked about here: having attractive settings. As much as I've come to dislike Arsenal, having it and LTK, etc. in the rotation every few maps isn't necessarily an awful thing, as when it does come time for Arsenal and LTK to come up, you'll probably keep your loyal crowd, AND you'll pick up a couple of the Arsenal regulars who might stay for a while and enjoy the change of pace!
