Video Card with removable GPU
« on: May 15, 2012, 11:05:33 pm »

I dont get why isn't there a video card with a gpu socket that allows you to put a gpu chipset and attach it with a custom heatsink in the market.

Its the same thing as doing with a cpu. What am I missing here? Will it cost more to do this?

If a new chipset comes out, rather than buying a $500 video card,I rather purchase the gpu chipset and install it by myself.

Thoughts or concerns?

lol, nope. Just wanted to know why hasn't a manufacturer thought about this. The pic above seems to be a  2005 Nvidia card prototype. Maybe they didn't think it would be successful.

Video card architecture is extremely different than normal PC architecture. The GPU and VRAM are tightly coupled and the pace of the technology in both the GPU and the VRAM has increased in lock-step the past few years making just replacing the GPU worthless / not possible.

Plus, do you really think they would charge significantly less if you JUST bought the GPU? Fat chance
