Starcraft freezes at menu on W7
« on: October 04, 2012, 10:58:37 pm »

Howdy, You guys are probably wondering why I'm posting this here about this, Well, I am simply hoping that someone had the same problem and worked around it!
I tried every fix I could find on Google and nothing seems to work.

Thing is, I installed Starcraft (The first one) yesterday due to a blast of nostalgia going through my head, And I played for about three hours just fine, No problems at all.
Now, I'm trying to launch it today, And I get several errors which all lead up to the same problem.

1 : I start up the game, I get a black screen, The music plays and if I press "M" for Multiplayer or "S" for single-player, I can hear the confirmation sound that I entered the mode, But nothing happens, The black screen remains.

2 : I start up the game, See the loading screen and the menu, But after a second or two, The menu goes black, The music plays and if I press "M" for Multiplayer or "S" for single-player, I can hear the confirmation sound that I entered the mode, But nothing happens, The black screen remains.

3 : I start up the game, See the loading screen but as soon as I see the menu, The image freezes and 75% of the screen is cutoff, Showing only the single-player option, I can't move the cursor to it either. The music plays and if I press "M" for Multiplayer or "S" for single-player, I can hear the confirmation sound that I entered the mode, But nothing happens.

So I'm pretty much stuck in front of a wall there and I was wondering if any of you had the similar problem playing SC1 on their PC and worked around and fixed it.
I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

I tried a BAT file shown on several sites, Compatibility mode, Run in 640x480, 256 colors, Run as admin, And many other tricks but nothing seems to work.
So, I'm pretty much hopeless and I don't want to dig out my old Windows 98 out of the wardrobe just to play StarCraft. :P

Did you try to reinstall it? Backup your save files and reinstall it.

Update your video card drivers?

Later today, ill look into the problem and post some resolutions.

Reinstalling did not fix it, Neither did updating my video drivers.
The thing that bugs me the most is that it worked perfectly fine just two days ago.

Probably a registry setting that did not get removed on uninstall. Old games have a tendency to leave residue behind in later windows versions.

Maybe try running is as administrator.

Or make sure all files have been deleted from: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\[PATH_TO_STARCRAFT]\

I already tried running as admin, And the VirtualStore directory contains no folders at all.

Just downloaded it from my bnet account and it worked fine in 64-bit Windows 7.  Sucks that hardly anyone plays, I was looking forward to playing the old UMS maps.  Anyone here remember the map "The Thing"?
