choosing a major during college is ass!
« on: September 19, 2010, 08:30:11 pm »

Im in a 4 year colllege and have 2-3 years until i finish school. They want me to choose a major, but i have no fucking idea. Economy is heading down the drain, and people are getting laid off and loosing jobs. When I leave college, finding a job that suits me is gonna be tough as shit.

Im a pro in computers, but idk if i want to go in a computer field. Let alone, its so much math requirements and I suck at math.

Im planning to go for a business major, because you can also work in a computer job and do other stuff as its more open to other jobs, like you can become a manager and shit.

I don't know what to pick right now as a major. Are you guys also having issues? What did you do or how did you go about picking a major?

Thanks

You can teach an engineer to be a business man, but you can't teach a business man to be an engineer.

Never base your major on what you think "the market wants". Business majors are a dime a dozen and worth even less. If you want big bucks you have to deal with the math. The difficulty of an engineering / (good) computer science degree is what reaps you the benefits later on in life.

Obviously, I am biased towards engineering, Electrical Engineering to be exact. Honestly, you have to love it or you will not succeed. However, there are other engineering professions that are not as rigorous like civil or mechanical.

The best option is to get an engineering bachelors and go for the MBA masters if you really want to go business. This career path sells SO MUCH MORE than simply going business all the way. Not to mention you have many more options for careers before you get a masters.

Thanks for the suggestion man. Im gonna probably take a career test or maybe apply at some computer job and work as an intern to see if I like the field or not.

I will think about Computer Engineering too. Thank you all!

It's simple.  Do what you enjoy.  Studying something for a job you might want is fail.

This.

Study for something you're passionate about or interested in. Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life. Confuscius said that.

I was going to study electrical engineering, but I ended up changing and going to art college. Sure, I'll probably never find as good pay as an illustrator or designer, but I won't ever have to look back and say I spent X years studying or working a job I didn't enjoy.

I am going into Mechanical Engineering because it is what I enjoy. It too, is math intensive and I wasn't the best at math. However, because I want to be an engineer, I find ways to Ace my math tests. KM said it best
You can teach an engineer to be a business man, but you can't teach a business man to be an engineer.

I  would pursue something you enjoy (IT field, computer science, etc). Also, take a bunch of your pre-requisite classes; Sociology, psychology, maybe some industrial design 1 and 2 classes, and see what you excel in. Take it from there.
There is  a quote out there that states if you enjoy what you do then you will never work a day in your life. Its true.

Definitely some great advice in this thread!

Just to add on to what other's have said, if you really study and pursue something you love and are passionate about, things will work themselves out.

I would rather have not very much money and spend my life doing something that I absolutely love rather than be rich from doing something that I hate.
