You need to have a Steam account, and a Source Based game purchased and installed, these include:

Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 Episode One
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
Counter-Strike: Source
Day of Defeat: Source

I'd suggest holding out for the Orange box and getting everything in one fell swoop at an amazing price.

what you need is a game that uses the source engine like css and dod:s for the multiplayer mods for hl2, you dont need hl2 for GES at all just a game that uses the source engine.
