Title: Any good med recommendation for getting rid of poison ivy/sumac?
Post by: Kratos on September 08, 2012, 12:42:40 am
Got poison sumac from cutting the lawn at my bros house. FUcking thing spread all over both of my feet, right arm, and left leg.

my bro said to pop the blisters or those bumps and to drain the oils. Then he said to apply Tecnu, some kickass poison remover..

its been day 2, and i guess i have to keep using it for a while.

What do you guys use to heal ivy/sumac? Whats a better medication to stop the itch fast?

Emily you maybe be able to answer this question lol

Take an oral antihistamine. I recommend Dexchlorpheniramine. It will make you drowsy but it will definitely stop the itch and calm down your immune system.

Don't pop the blisters. It will make you more likely to get an infection. I would get a 0.5% hydrocortisone cream. Apply it lightly to affected areas (do not apply to unbroken skin or popped blisters) three times a day for a maximum of 7 days. This will help the itch and the redness. If you are still itchy, use calamine in between.

-pharmacist rant over :D

Colloidal oatmeal is good too. Though, if you put some regular oats into a stocking, throw it into a bath, it does the same trick. I recommend this remedy to people who have dermatitis/eczema.
