Title: Hello everyone. Yes, I'm new here.
Post by: novax druid on July 26, 2007, 07:39:03 am
Just extending my hello to everyone. This mod has caught my eye and is obviously the reason I joined this forum. I wish the best of luck to everyone working on it. I am glad to join this forum. Huzzah

I don't know if this is the right spot to ask, but where would be a good place to ask questions about mods (both yours and creating ones)?

What you want to know?

Tools necesary for modding. That and what kind of people you would need in a modding team. I do however thank you for answering my response.

The main tools that i use for source modding are:

Visual studio 2003 (can get 2005 for free as well) for all coding related stuff
3dsmax for modeling stuff
hammer (valve tool) for making maps
photoshop for image editing (with vtf plugin)
vtfedit for quick viewing image files
gfcscape for looking at valves files

Um and thats basically it.

Thank you for your advice. Are most of these programs free or is there a price I will have to pay? Also, is Zbrush 3D any good for modeling stuff (I have heard it is a good program as well, but I'm unsure of the credibility)? I apologize if these questions annoy you. I am a noob.

Visual studio 2003
3dsmax
photoshop

Are all commercial programs but i get most of them from uni (special licensing agreement). But there are many free programs (except for visual studio you can get the 2005 express edition) that will do the same thing. Best place to look is on the valve wiki as it should state what programs have exporters for source. Also ask on the steam forums because im one out of many mod devs and every one uses something diffrent.

All the others are free (google them)

I thank you very much for all the information. It is much appreciated. My last question for tonight. I am thinking of producing/creating a mod of my own. Would you be interested in helping me out any with it (of course, when you are not busy with your own mod and other things)?

Well i cant i got to much on my plate as is.

Atm there is a big lack of good coders and animators willing to work on mods. So good luck finding people.

it's better to join an existing mod than creating your own. at least the way things are now

you can get the PLE version of maya for free to make models. any renders will have a watermark but it can export obj and smd files just fine

or you can get xsi mod tool for free

I understand Mark. fonfa and Loafie, thank you for the advice. However, I would still rather create my own mod than join (at least at the moment).

The programs that Mark listed are the 'big boy' programs for game developers. There are free programs that do the job decently as well. GIMP is a good replacement for the costly Photoshop, and XSI Mod tool is a free program that XSI released specifically to work with Valve's Source Engine.

Of course if you have the money to dish out for those other programs, I would urge you to do so because they will get the job done a lot easier, and also because they are the programs that game developers use and it would be best to get familar with them if you plan to study game development.

Sean, thanks, that is detailed information I need to know. I do plan to study game development. I know Mark mentioned some websites, but what is some good ones to look for members to build a mod team?

or you can  <3 stfu <3

there are a large number of online Source communities to try to cull talent from, such as hlfallout.com, interlopers.net, moddb.com just to name a very scant few. sometimes You can find talent for individual development areas on their respective sites too, like modelers at cgsociety.org

I thank you very much for the help Loafie. Also, I am new to this as well, but can Half-Life 2 support a PC controller? Please, if the answer is obvious, at least tell me off nicely

It does indeed support gamepads. :)

Thanks for letting me know Sean. That's good in the type of controls I want to implement in a mod. Also, is it possible to create your own unique controls for a specific mod?

Awesome, that's good to hear. Thanks for telling me that. Sounds like you can create just about anything with the right tools. The next question I have might sound awkward, so I apologize if it is strange. Can you get the realism to that if a character with long flowing hair looks down with their weapon, that their hair would be visible in the eyes of that character? Also, say if something is covering one of the eyes, is there a way to make it seem like it is? Again, I apologize if these are awkward questions.

i don't see why not. it would certainly take some ingenuity though
Title: Re: Hello everyone. Yes, I'm new here.
Post by: novax druid on July 29, 2007, 08:23:42 pm
That's good. I understand about the ingenuity part as that involves alot work making it look right and such.

It's difficult to pull those things off because your looking with your own two eyes, into a screen from your character's first person view. So say if you did something to cover half of the screen, it might seem odd. Of course it would be interesting to see what it would look like.

True. This is the aspect in which I will need to work on to get the desired outcome I seek. However, do you Sean think the hair idea is possible?
Title: Re: Hello everyone. Yes, I'm new here.
Post by: Sean [Baron] on July 29, 2007, 09:34:52 pm
Of course it's possible, but it's really hard to say how well it would work, or look without seeing it.

True, true. Another issue I want to work with. And thank you again for insuring that this is possible.

Another question. Where is a good place to start a website/forum for a Mod? Also, what is a good program to get models from games (PC, PS2, etc.)? I'm sorry if this offends or annoys you.

for a website, you'll need a domain name (your web address) and some online webspace. you can buy packages for only a few $ or £ per month with enough space and traffic allowance to get you started.
A forum is then uploaded onto the webspace, and then installed - this is the easy part, it's all step-by-step.
examples of forum software: phpBB, SMF, vBulletin (not free)

Thank you for the website information, much apliged. Also, if my other question is worded wrong, I mean ripping models from other games. I don't plan on using the models themselves, but they will help in bone developing and such.
Title: Re: Hello everyone. Yes, I'm new here.
Post by: Sean [Baron] on August 01, 2007, 05:42:54 am
If you have half-life 2, you can take all of the models from that game use them for whatever you need, of course you can take them and then use them in another game, unless its a mod for half-life 2.
Title: Re: Hello everyone. Yes, I'm new here.
Post by: novax druid on August 01, 2007, 06:01:10 am
It's a mod for Half-Life 2, but I do thank you for telling me the other information.

Another question. It's similiar to the hair question. My question is, as playing as a female character, is it possible to look down and see the female assets? This isn't for what most of you are thinking for, but to feel more that the character seems more female other than a feminine hand.
Title: Re: Hello everyone. Yes, I'm new here.
Post by: olileauk on August 14, 2007, 07:30:17 pm
well only a few games have feet implemented. if you look down, most of the time you're just a floating head. It'll be the same with a body.

usually that stuff is pretty complex, but it might have gotten easier.

yeah well it should be possible codewise but i don't have a clue

JS needs to be bigger, and Viashino's territory needs to be closer to JS I can't walk that far.
