I'm trying to install 4.2, but installation fails because my C drive (which has nothing but windows on it) doesn't have enough space to hold what appears to be temporary files for patching maps.

How much space does installation need?
-
At least 500-600 MB of patch files
-
I had about 1.1 GB free on the C: drive and it failed.
-
2.63GB is what mine currently uses

If you have space, then you may have some sector issues. run chkdsk in command prompt.

Maybe a corrupted download?
Try again with a new download of the patch.

So sorry, but I stupidly left out one detail (which is actually apparent in the screenshot): I'm trying to install 4.2 on to my F: drive, where Steam is installed. That drive has enough space to install GE:S, but my C: drive doesn't have enough space to store the temporary patch files.
I'll probably end up extending the C: drive with a partition manager or something.

Ohhhhh sheeet
It's I8PP!
Hows it going man? Beside you know, having C drive issues
-
Hey, Wake.
Nothing much, just getting back into play GE:S for the past couple months.
Issue's fixed now... C: drive needed about 1.6 GB free for me.
