Title: early 4.2 menu impressions
Post by: Rick Astley on November 21, 2011, 12:56:11 am
well i have to say that from what i have seen of the work in progress loading screen and the new create server menu is that it is "Streets ahead"- Basically lightyears a head of Beta 4 and 4.1

the new create server looks really polished and much more simplified than its predecessor which should help new players intergrate into goldeneye source..another thing i love about it is not having to worry about entering what weapon set i need now that i can choose from a long list- i have been stuck on slappers only for ages.

the loading screen which according to Major is very work in progress but looks incredible as the mixture of casino, cradle, complex, archives, control, facility and silo make it much more pretty than the old blue pp7 gun barrell...i agree that the hints and tips are great for new players and well it makes the game look modern next to games like COD, Arkham City and etc

from what i have seen was just the tip of the iceburg it all looks great...cant wait to see some in game action :)

Awesome, you guys are so professional at what you do, some commercial developer's don't work to this standard. It's a shame though that the mod has to rely on another game to work, I hope it can become standalone one day.

i strongly think that the Identity select should use the photos from the goldeneye wiki:
http://wiki.goldeneyesource.net/index.php/Characters (http://wiki.goldeneyesource.net/index.php/Characters) as the images for the smaller photos and perhaps
posed models of the charaters for th bigger photos like having Bond do his infamous Bond Pose or OddJob with his Hat

That'd be amazing, The question is... Is that possible?

All WIP, ideas welcome.

Also note, the larger image...might not be a image ;)

Yes, I forgot to mention, the character images are shit. They are from the old character select. We are redoing them entirely ASAP.

For the loading screens, how about a more discreet loading bar, the old one kind of takes away from the lovely new images, I was thinking a thin bar that fills in green, with small writing above, or is the writing even necessary?

Well, For downloads, I suppose it is.
What I propose is that this text is put into a corner of the screen, Like Battlefield 2 loadings, And the bar is smaller and remains at its current position.
Although, I don't know if the loading screens can be changed, It always been the same thing since HL1 and I've never seen any HL/HL2 mod use any other kind of loading screen.

I did think to myself after the post that maybe this couldn't be changed and was part of Half Life 2.

Hey, This ain't a crazy idea, In fact, I believe that it could work out pretty well. 'Up to the devs to give their point of view on this and if it could be realisable.

I'll see what I can do. None of this stuff is documented by Valve so it takes a lot of exploratory debugging to figure out :-D

And I will gladly take the ass whooping for forcing the devs to ruin such an amazing classic game ;-)

They won't, they have already stated that they won't compromise the core mechanics, but will advance on them to bring in a bigger crowd and hopefully get Goldeneye Source the popularity it deserves.

You mean the playerbase? ;)

We have popularity, and credibility, and notoriety. Now we need it to culminate a consistent base of playing players. Not just 100,000 downloaders. But 10 maybe 20,000 daily players. This would max out our servers easily. 5 times over.

Hell I've said before even if we had 1000 consistent players playing 1-2 hours daily, that fills every server in peak times and has the other 9000 wanting to get in on that when they get home.. Or a free hour!

i had another idea (inspired by the arkham city game) is that when you are selecting a charater you can click on a button to view the history of that charater

Eg:

Real Name: Alec Treveylan
Alias: Janus
Occupation: Terrolist
Affliction: Janus Syndicate
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Brownish Blond
Weight: 182 lb
Height: 6 ft
First Appearance: Goldeneye
Attribute 01: right side of his face was burnt
Attribute 02:
Background Story: Etc

i would just love to see this sort of thing for GE Source...dont know how it might be possible due to charater rights....

I agree, that would be cool, the character could be rotating in a side window in a pose that suits their character.

Good idea. But its a trade off: Spend time coding more features into a menu that people look at for 5 seconds. Or move on to a new project.

A new menu was needed, but how much is needed.

Not against any ideas, simply throwing in another side.

To be honest KillerMonkey, I honestly think the first screen shot is perfect for the main menu.

I like how [whoever designed it] added the level-/location-select-photo-menu from GE007 to the GES menu background. I do still prefer the GE007 main menu over that. However I prefer the GES ingame menu over the GE007 multiplayer menu.

PS: I also like how you don't have to type in the weapon selection by hand anymore!  :-)

It's the people their first impression. Remember how people decide whether or not to keep listening to a new song, based in the first twenty seconds?

The color of the VGUI elements (non-background image) are still the old ones and will be updated to a more folder-like appearance for v4.2

Awesome! :D

The background seems like a black-and-white image, with the white and gray replaced by a folder-like color. What I meant with the above image was suggesting (just a suggestion) the folder color of the background to be more like the green color of the N64 menu. (not replacing the background image)

i think the menu itself looks really good by itself without any changes the only thing i would like to see changed is the menu music lowered a bit...i always have the put the volume lower everytime it loads...apart from that it looks good

another suggestion can be another menu called Extras which has the GE Source Intro videos and Credits (it might give it a more distinctive look again its just an idea) it might be hard to program so nevermind

To sort out the music issue, go to Start Menu, Control Panel, Hardware & Sound, Sound, click on Communications tab, select "Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%". Then click OK. Fixed the issue for me, everything sounds levelled.
