Title: Does anyone know a good screen recording software?
Post by: Rick Astley on September 20, 2011, 11:00:02 am
i want to try to make a trailer for GE Source and i was wondering what are some good (and possible free) Screen Capture Programs to record footage of gameplay?

Tricky if it has to be free. Been down this road a lot of times when i was in flash development. I use Camtasia, imo its the best of all such softwares, but its not free.

Fraps is worth every penny in my opinion, fullscreen capturing with hardly any performance drop. I too have been down this road and have never found anything better than this, sometimes you just have to put your hand in your pocket. Check my channel, these were all recorded using Fraps:-

I personally like Bandicam.  The demo is free and lets you capture as much as 10 minutes of audio / video.  You can even rig it to capture video with a hotkey so that at the 10min mark you just press the hotkey twice (1x to end 1x to start again) and voila, you've got another 10 minutes.  then you can just splice the clips together.

The downside is that you get a "bandicam" watermark on playback.

Use Camtasia 7 :), great thing about it is that it wont drop frame rate like how fraps does.

I still say Fraps, tried all the rest and Fraps is the smoothest hands down:-

I have over 750GB of raw video to wade through because of Fraps.
Get a compressor first. T_T

Fraps blows! I don't use it simply because it shits on FPS.

Unless you are using a version of fraps that is above 3.0, then it sucks. I used to have a version 2.x and it was horrible. It would kill my frames like no other. After getting the latest one, it destroyed any other program I tried and it runs twice as smooth now.

No, Not Hypercam, It really is useless and bad, Go with Camtasia. I believe they still offer a 30-day trial for their product, Which is enough time for you to capture a lot of footage.

I've used Fraps for years for 3D application capture, even on my crappy old 9500 GS it still works great, and I've never had any stability issues with it. Just make sure you have the HDD space for all the uncompressed video.

However, for out-of-game recording (like if I'm making a software tutorial or something) I use Camstudio. It's free, open source, and it has all the features I need.

WHAT! I hardly notice any difference, even when I had a low end PC I used Fraps, have been for years and in all those years it's never crashed my computer, I suggest being careful when not downloading from official site, my brother had a similar incident with a cracked version, messed his whole system up.

I might have to try Camtasia again, sounds like it's gotten a lot better since I tried it, can't see it replacing Fraps though.

Last version I used back in the day was the 3rd version, Let me tell you that it is WAY different now and really, Really good for desktop recording. I haven't tried it in a game yet, And I don't plan to do so.

Fraps in every way sucks. I have a very powerful computer and i tried recording Goldeneye source and it was horrendous. I don't know why people says craps is good. Never had had a pleasant experience with it. I use !ACTION by Miliris. THEE best recording software I ever used in my life.
