Title: Multi Core & DirectX Version
Post by: markpeterjameslegg on September 03, 2011, 01:44:58 pm
I have noticed that I can't select either of these in the Advanced Options, are they not implemented yet? I have a Quad Core and am on DirectX 11 on 64Bit Windows 7.

I do know that the Source engine cannot support DirectX 10 or higher, But can support 7 and 8, But the default is 9.
As for multi-core rendering... I have no idea.

If you ever have to lower your DirectX to 8 or 7 (Which I doubt), Enter in launch options "-dxlevel x0" (Replace x with 7 8 or 9)

Namajna, thats not what he is saying.

@Mark, Hey Valve has yet to release support for multi-core rendering on mods. I HOPE and pray when the new counter-strike is released, they will release all the new toys they have been promising; hopefully including multi-core

Yeah, Source doesn't support DirectX above 9 (since Valve refuses to update their now quite ancient engine technology) and multi-core support is a semi-broken feature in to the couple games that have it (sometimes it works, sometimes it causes stutter and horrid performance drops) so it's not included in the moddable Source build I think. You don't really need it anyway, the game runs fine on a single-core processor really...

Lots of reasons!  :)

I thought it was pretty much common knowledge that those features have never worked.

Did you just get a new CPU or computer or something?

Yep! New computer, didn't mean to irritate, I did a quick check using search but didn't come up with anything so I thought I would ask.

I was always told by KM that mulicore function was always enabled and it just wasn't an option to turn off in the options....lol...guess there is some confusion going on...:)

Oh, and Dx7 as far as I can remember doesn't work in GES. Only 8 and 9. No 10 or 11

There is multicore support in the source engine 2007 but it's limited to basic stuff. True multicore rendering is very difficult if not impossible because of the way threads work in windows (and any other non real time system).

In either case it's not available :-)

I really think its because monkey is not good enough to code for multi cores. If chuck Norris was Managing Director he would be able to do it. :P

speaking of chuck norris, this one is funny..

"They once named a street after Chuck Norris, but they had to close it down because no one dared cross Chuck Norris."

Chuck Norris doesn't cheat death, he beats it fair and square.
