Title: Weather effects in GESouce
Post by: Rick Astley on April 09, 2011, 10:32:34 am
i was wondering if GE Sorce would get weather effects like in L4D2 (heavy rain for example with the thunder and fog?)

If you make a big enough explosion in facility it will set off the fire alarm, and water will rain down.

Why would we want lame effects like what L4D2 had?  Ten years ago, Morrowind implemented vastly-superior weather effects, and Bethesda's code is (somehow) lower-quality than Valve's.

Fog is built into the engine, admittedly it's very bland and limited fog that's more used for optimizing rather than aesthetics. Rain and snow are also effects included in the SDK which we can use but they suck visually. Also there's only one time in the movie where there is any such notable weather which is the blizzard at Severnaya.

We almost certainly can't do dynamic changeable weather like L4D2 has, it certainly wouldn't be worth the effort. We can do limited weather effects but it's not a priority.

It's more trouble than it's worth most of the time, especially just for variety's sake.

Personally I prefer the gameplay in L4D2, and the larger variety of weapons, special infected and environments etc... Though I ultimately prefer L4D1 when it comes to the characters and the storyline, and also being able to see your body in first person, that was a nice feature.

Once they've finished bringing over the L4D1 campaigns into L4D2 there will be no going back though.

Totally agree with everything you just said there. Can't wait for them to bring the maps over. It is going to be epic. Characters and story in L4D1 were 1000% better. Rochelle is a bitch....

Why would goldeneye need weather effects? The only effect it had was fog and that was on one level. I think it would be a big waste of time.

Probably to make a few more creative maps? I know the third-party wm_siberia map has both rain and snow, but like it's been stated before, the sdk 2007 weather effects are bad, which can be seen in that map. The snow isn't that bad, but the rain isn't good either. I'm assuming sdk 2013 has better weather effects, and since v4.3 is supposedly going be on sdk 2013, maybe then there can be better weather effects.
