Title: Frustration trying to fire up a dedicated server
Post by: Juggoire on November 21, 2010, 09:06:17 pm
I've been trying to fire up a dedicated server (to leave running on my router machine, Windows 2003 server, which is on 24/7) but not having much luck

The file structure for my source install can be seen in this screenshot, as well as the persistent error that keeps occurring. This error happens whether I run the SRCDS.exe in UI (via the little shortcut I created - which is not my preferred choice) or if I use a batch file with the command:

srcds.exe -console -game gesource -maxplayers 8 +map ge_caves +exec sv/type/dm.cfg

(Where the dm.cfg file contains the server specific settings)

Is there a known work-around for this?

The server hotfix is installed.
I've tried binding the IP in the command line.
I've even re-downloaded HL2MP using the HLUPDATETOOL.

Nothing seems to be fixing it :(

Basically, I'm at a loss and desperate to get a server up and running for this fantastic mod.

(btw - not sure I mentioned it, in a shameless sycophantic way, that this mod absolutely rocks my socks off!)

Just to make sure were on the same page, you've followed the server install guide correct?

+exec sv/type/dm.cfg   ,what exactly is this doing for you?

Yip - followed the guide to the letter.

The 'exec sv/type/dm.cfg' is my way of setting up the server so, if I choose to, I can run multiple servers on the same machine (it's a decent rig for a router/file server box ;) )

It's a moot point, as the server doesn't reach the point where it's executing those settings before it fails with the error shown. (The screenshot shows the server attempting to start with no more than the commandline srcds.exe -game gesource)

Hope that helps!

+servercfgfile "xxx.cfg" ?

Have you tried updating orangebox or just hl2mp? If that doesn't work, maybe trash your whole bin folder and update again.

Although I think you just need to update your underlying bins (orangebox)

Will try that ASAP - didn't know 'orangebox' was an option for hlupdatetool!

Updating now - it's downloading lots of files, so hopefully it'll fix it!

You sir, are a genius - server is up and running (remote desktopped, so can't test it yet as I'm doing this on my breaks from work :D )

Hopefully no issues actually connecting when I get home.

Thanks again!
