Hey someone needs to host a tournament. Maybe if someone steps up and we can get the word out we could have something huge planned for this weekend or sometime soon.
-
Sounds like a pretty fun idea, might lift up the GE:S community a bit, are we doing 1v1 or teams?
-
Either is fine with me. I don't care. I'm just looking for a way to get more players online at the same time.
-
hmmmm, it would be pretty cool to have teams of 3, no radar, no armor, and the first team to 20 wins.
-
Teams would require something like ventrilo or Teamspeak.
Three problems:
1. the need of a TS/Vent server
2. ppl who have issues setting up their client correctly
3. or do not even own a microphone/Headset
Teams without voice communication will have a disadvantage compared to teams which got it.
Sure in the end there are even bigger issues which might occure (e.g. latency, timezones), but we should at least sort out the ones which can be solved.
Next issue:
How would you select the teams?
Shall ppl be allowed to choose their teammates on their own or will they be randomly selected?
How about substitutes in case one of the players of a team doesn't turn up at matchtime?
What about adjudicators who admin the server, watch the game and take the screenshot of the scoreboard at the end of the match?
....
i could go on with this, but i think you got my point.
Whoever is going to host a GES community tournament will have a lot of things to take care of, or else the event will fail.
-
I like the idea. and I want to be in bird´s team :P
-
I'm Down :)!
-
You can have team-only voice chat as long as sv_alltalk is off. That reminds me that v4.1 includes an automatic sv_alltalk disabling mechanism if teamplay is turned on mid-match (auto teams).
-
I like the idea, but if all the good players got together the competition would be pretty pointless since each match would result in 20-0
-
I say for the first match:
Players:
Proxie and Roger Moore Sucks
V.S.
WNxBigBird and The Cy
-
Depending on when you guys hold this I would like to live stream and commentate.
-
That would be epic, live commentary :)!
-
I'm afraid I got a little rusty but I'm interested, too.
Maybe someone should use this thread to collect the names of those who'd like to participate.
-
I'd love to join in, but I'd be utterly useless as a team member/player in general so there's not really any point me taking part.

nobody is useless. we´re all members of the big goldeneye family. the only difference to other families is the fact that we shoot in each other´s faces all the time. ;)

Damn...looks like I sparked some interest. Live commentary would be awesome. I'm just a player so I can't help work out the kinks. Maybe it will have to wait til 4.1 for the team chat. People keep talking about the hit registry too possibly getting fixed in 4.1 but I haven't decided yet if they are just whinning cuz their aim sucks. Isn't lag the real reason for this anyways?

As far as I understand it's like this:
- the hitboxes are smaller than usual for a Source game -> you're just hitting if you're really hitting and there's no way to shoot someone already standing around the corner. (except for lag which makes it seem that way for the player being shot if he just ran around the corner)
- blood effects are local, the engine on the client guesses whether you could have hit something or not -> you might see blood even if the server didn't see your bullet hitting the victim
(this is the main cause for players being confused)
- the player walking speed is slowerthan for a usual Source game -> decreases client/server blood/hit inconsistency and is faithful to the original
After all, I think you're right about latency being the reason for complaints. Think of it like this: hit detection was implemented already in Source, so there's two possibilities: either the devs just used it (as it was in CS: S and every other game nobody complains about) or they implemented something better (who'd implement something they knew was inferior to something existing?). In any case the only 'fault' would be to have smaller hitboxes which cause blood to spill even if the victim wasn't hit, but yet there are many players prefering it over randomly getting headshots even if their supposed killer wasn't really aiming at their head but rather above it or being shot luckily because their hitbox was hanging out of their cover.

I like the idea of us picking teams ourselves.... 1v1 may be an option also.
-
Picking our own teams won't be fair at all. We already have a clue as to who will want to be with who. They will just be overpowered like I said earlier if all the pros gang up.
-
I say we just get a list of everyone who wants to be in the tourny and put the names in a random generator.
-
Could be very unfair for some... :- /
Wouldn't it be good to have the list first and compare people to one another, rating them and putting teams together that have about the same teamscore? I guess this would make it more interesting - even if it was like one team consisting of people rated 5-5-5 and another of 7,5-7,5-0.
But I guess there shouldn't be more than 5 players per team, otherwise this system could be unfair, too.
-
It should be tiered. There is no reason to group rookies with experts. That is like pairing the harlem globtrotters with your local middle school basketball team.

...except for having fun by slaughtering new players most brutally

What about qualification matches?
Something like free for all deathmatch and the first few players of each match will take part in the tourney.
Or
If there are enough participants, we could have Agent, Secret Agent and 00 Agent tourney.
So all the uebergood players will take part in the 00 Agent matches while less skilled ones are allowed to take part in Agent or Secret Agent.
-
I still like my idea of the 1v1/2v2 randomly picked matches.
-
sv_friction -1 tourny
...but seriously, it would be pretty annoying for one good player being paired with a ton of people who do not wish to play strategically and don't get much done, just as it would be for the others as one player is taking all the kills. organizing teams and having divisions would probably be for the best.
That way, the pairings won't be so uneven and we can have actual competitive play, rather than just a normal public server match.

That is an excellent idea, it's better than paring to opposite people together or two strong player together, or two crapper players together lol.
-
I think we should have playoffs to form the tiers like Agent, Secret Agent, and 00 Agent. The winner of Agent gets a chance to move up to the Secret Agent tier and the winner of that gets to play for the title in 00 Agent. Maybe we could choose a day where it doesn't matter what time you get on. You just have to score a certain amount of points that day to qualify. So even if you don't qualify for 00 Agent you still have a chance of moving up through the tiers later when the tourney starts. Maybe the top 2 or 3 of each tier advance.

^^That
and also, I would hate to have a 1v1 tournament. OWS had one about a year ago, and no one really enjoyed it. I believe WNx is also currently on the verge of holding an intramural 1v1 tournament of their own, so making another 1v1 wouldn't be the best option. Its a little too competitive and a lot less fun. A bracketed 4v4, 3v3, etc would be a lot more fun and would emphasize sticking together and using teamwork.
-
Completely agree with Jimbo on this one. I got my ass kicked my proxy on 1v1 with shotguns. :P I don't want that to happen again. :)
-
Any news on this? Will it happen? Are any new players (e.g. also new to the forums) interested?
-
I'm interested on it.
Teams is the way. I like 3 vs 3.
And fair teams please :P so no random shit :P. nobody would like to fight against Júlio, BigBird and E-S in the same team o.o. It's possible.
-
For this to work, a group of people are gointo have to set it up. Can't rely on anyone, or the dev team.
The dev team is in full speed ahead for 4.1 we literally can't spare any time. 4.1 is so close and this is the hardest part that were at.
If the rules and everything can get written up, the team can back it/ promote it.
My suggestion would be for people to write up a full tournament rules and blueprint. The the rest can work on fine tuning the rules. Then once a complete write up of the rules (including everything, game mode, weapon sets, timelimits, everything) we can work on getting a server (the guy who was promoting his new free servers would be great).
Then we should be ontrack to start gaming.
-
Maybe it would also be a good idea to have such a tournament prepared (in terms of rules) before 4.1 and held shortly after 4.1 is released - it could be included in the announcement of 4.1 as well and attract new players to get in touch with the community.
-
I think having a tourny when 4.1 is released is a great idea.
Any chance we can get an approximate date of 4.1's release?......Pleeeeeeeeeeease:)
-
2on2 would be perfect.
-
I can do a writeup and such if you guys throw out ideas and I will ask VC what he thinks based on the proposals. I can unofficially/officially promote it on behalf of the team and community. And yes it should be held the weekend after 4.1 releases and can be promoted in a news post on moddb to attract more folks. I hope enzo is still interested in the livestream/commentary notion. That is gawd damn cool...
I will be purchasing some servers for the release period so we can use them if need be, and to trusted folks I could setup for them to access and administrate the comp if I cannot be relied upon.
Just brainstorm the conditions you want and we'll try find a basic consensus.
-
Yup I still am, just pissed at cable upload limit.. might have to bump it up for a month.
