Title: Alien Swarm for free on Steam on July 19th

Well, another advertisement thread I guess. It's been a while since my Portal giveaway thread, though.

There will be a free source engine based top down alien shooter called 'Alien Swarm' on Steam on July 19th.
Since it doesn't look too bad, the requirements are low and it comes with a bunch of achievements (64!) maybe some of you might want to give it a try. Although I doubt they'll give away their Source SDK this time around, I'd be interested if that's the case, so just post in here or drop me a P.M. if you can confirm it. ;-)

EDIT: I just happened to see it's marked "Includes Source SDK", so that solves that. -> So maybe there'll be new players for GE: S if they can get the SDK for free this time :-)

You can get the Source code too, and based on the gameplay video it has the L4D glow effect, I think we need to update the the official code since ours doesn't look as good as the L4D one. But that's up to KM I guess.

ive downloaded Alien Swarm

installed it, includded installing the Alien Swarm SDK after that ive installed the GES-Beta4  but when i restart steam, GES isnt there,

when i hit the shortcut on the desktop, it starts up steam in store

so i dont know how or what? lol

I guess it doesn't include a true SDK. Guess you will still have to own a true source game.

ah thats a pitty.

ive got a Digitalzone No-steam CSS btw but that would not have any influence i quess..

lets see wich copy do you guys recommend to buy for GES ?

Well the cheapest game that will allow you to play GE:S is Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, you can buy it on steam for $4.99.

Unfortunately the free versions of HL2:DM do NOT come with the SDK.

There's no way to get this working with only the Alien Swarm SDK.
You'll always need Source SDK base 2007 to run mods based on the Source Engine 2007.

Maybe it would work if the mod was exclusively compiled on the Alien Swarm SDK, but this is not an option for us (i guess).
Not only the code would have to be rewritten again, also we don't know exactly if valve cut out important things from the source code we would need for GES.

Also i doubt that ppl who don't wanna spend $5 for a game to be able to play hundreds of mods would be playing GES for a long time.

Hell, i even bought TF2 just to be able to play a certain mod on Orangebox engine back in the days when there was no SDK base 2007.

HL2 Deathmatch on steam, highly recommend! (only 5$) or CSS on a sale weekend so you can pwn noobs when not playing GE:S with your new mod enabled playablity
