When I'm playing GE:S I find that Steam reports me to my friends as being "In-Game", playing "Source SDK Base 2007". However, I've seen a couple of other players who show up as being "In-Mod" playing "GoldenEye: Source (beta 4)". How do I change this so that I show up as the latter, rather than as the former?

It's a random Steam thing, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. No matter what you'll be listed on your steam community page as playing SDK Base 2007, while it may show up as one or the other in your friends' friends lists.

For the record, that wasn't the case for the longest time. It's broken because Valve.

yeah ssl, sorry to say but that is incorrect. Ever since valve changed their source sdks to 2006 and 2007 it got all fucked. It just says it all the time now. Most likely it will have to be tweaked and fixed in 4.1.

A steam client update was released that addressed this yesterday.

That's valve, at first they have to break everything in order to fix the issues in one of the next updates.
I guess this saves time and money for beta testing.
Just trow out the shit and fix all the broken stuff later on.

Thats the new design strategy these days... Microsoft, of all companies, is actually trying to curtail that as much as possible with their open betas for major releases (re: Windows 7, MS Office 2010, Visual Studio 2010, etc.) and I think their products are totally seeing the advantages of this process.
Valve PRETENDS to have an open beta process, but in reality its just there to make sure their code doesn't crash. They don't do thorough testing and compatibility checks, its painfully obvious.

Thanks for the help, chaps, I appreciate it :)

If it aint broke, why fix the fucking thing?
sometimes I don't understand these things.
