I can't find if anyone else has asked this question already and I can't find any answers on other sites/forums... so... with Steam for Mac on its way, will Goldeneye be coming along with it? I assume that it will because it is built on Orangebox, but I really have no idea. Please, please, please I'm dying to know if I'll be able to play the greatest mod of all time on my mac.
Can't tell you how much fun this mod is. My friends and I have set up a server and often play a few nights a week with about a dozen other players joining in. Thanks developers.
-
If we get the compiling tools for the Mac, then yeah because it would just be a matter of compiling the mod twice.
-
An exciting prospect. Whilst I don't give two sausages for Macs... it would be great to see GE:S available on Mac OS. I imagine not many mods will actually bother with it. Only the real professional ones.
Though I'm sure it will be many months before the Mac tools are available from Valve.
-
Thanks guys!
Well from Valve's News Release it appears the tools may already be available - (http://www.valvesoftware.com/news.php) -
"... Support for the Mac in Source and Steamworks is available to third parties immediately. Interested developers should contact Jason Holtman at jasonh@valvesoftware.com."
Jonathon please let me know if there is anything I can do to help bring GE:S to Mac. I'm no developer, but I'd be happy to help in whatever way I can.
-
If anyone sends me the latest and fastest Apple laptop I will gladly make sure GE:S runs on mac.
According to Valve (on their programmers listserve) they will be releasing an Apple SDK soon after the release of the official games. It has left to be said how drastic of a change is needed (if any).
-
You'll need the Apple version of Visual C++, won't you?
-
LOL.
Good point. They'll most likely use the same method they use in Linux. They have a .vcproj -> makefile and use g++/gcc to take care of the rest. Since OSX is Unix in disguise they can go the same route.
-
Dw. I got a mac book pro and as soon as I can there will be a mac version
-
Why not just use g++/gcc the whole way? Then I could contribute for a change.
-
They do, xcode is just a nice face for g++/gcc and apple do a lot of development for it as well.
-
If GES makes it to Mac, I will be forever great full and will never need my PC again! Thats right, I only use my PC for GES!
-
Not to be confused with mac but has anyone tried wind doors for Linux it adapts Linux with some of windows programing kinda like running windows in Linux I am trying it in Linux. not working well but its progressing. If it helps the name of the distribution I use is PC-Linux-OS. its also a server edition
-
There's also this nifty package called WINE that runs windows programs under many commonly used Linux Distributions. I got Steam running under WINE on an Ubuntu 6 install a few years ago.
-
having problems runing ges on newer linux i guess but im still learning linux as well
-
Just reviving this thread because Steam for mac is supposedly supposed to come out very soon, within a few days from what I've heard. I was wondering if any more work had been done yet to get GE:S over to the Mac. The only reason that I care is that I'm a pretty dedicated GE:S player and I'd like to get my GF in on the action as well but she only has a macbook. D= We have been waiting for this day to come for a while and I'm really hoping she will be able to join me soon. =P
EDIT: Actually I guess it came out today. =O
-
GES won't be "Mac-Ready" any time soon. First of all I have no way to test it, I hate Apple and their products, secondly it is not even close to being a priority for the team.
Thanks for caring though :-/
-
And since only macs with like 9600GT M + can run any source games effectively, its a small market.
-
Dont listen to monkey, he is just a mac hater. As soon as valve release a mac sdk ill compile it and release a beta test.
-
I'M A MAC FANBOY hater
-
I have a couple of RL friends who are Mac guys who downloaded Steam the day it came out, and asked me when GES would be coming out. I hope Valve eventually gives us the Source code to do so, thanks for showing interest in coding it Lodle!
-
Well, thanks Lodie. =P
I'm not a fan of Macs either trust me, but my GF has a macbook and no way to get a PC and I'd just like to be able to play GE:S with her and that's the only reason I'd care that it goes over to mac. (and because it opens the doors for more players of course.)
-
I tried portal on my iMac, at fairly low settings it was playable, but since it was cheaper to buy a decent gaming machine and a mac than a mac with a decent gpu at the time I got mine; thats what I did. So I certainly have no reason to play games on the mac.
-
The GPU was the only part that was not good in the one I got. The CPU is faster, the screen displays colors much truer to life and has had less issues than the gaming one the time I have had them. I had pretty much quit using the Win machine for anything but games since I like the mac for everything. Though when I upgraded the gaming machine to a 40 inch TV for a monitor I started using it for online video too.
-
I don't want this thread going in the wrong direction. Let's just agree that the quality of mac computers is incredibly high, while their capabilities/power is substantially lower. Not everyone needs a lot of power! Simple as that.
-
HL2 was recently released for mac so I'm assuming the SDK base was as well...
-
It seems the release of the Source SDK for Mac isn't out yet and for each mod wanting to release an extra compiled version for Mac would be necessary. (which basically shouldn't be that much of a problem, I hope)
We are working on a code update so you can compile your mods for OSX.
See the full thread here:

-
I hope they'll be done with this soon, right now allmost every update is breaking something on the SDK.
Today Hammer wasn't working at all and i had to delete the .blob files and redownload the source sdk 2007 to get it working again.
-
Does anyone have some news about GoldenEye: Source for Mac?
-
ask valve
