Title: Environment / Prop Artist
Post by: Kirby teh Pink on July 04, 2009, 03:33:55 am
Hi all, I've Been doing a course on 3dsmax for six months now, and wanted to do something during the holiday break, So I thought I might as well apply here.

I know, six months is a very short time and I don't mind if you turn me down just on that fact alone, but I was hoping I could do simple modelling jobs just to pass the time. (level props, etc.)

Anyway, I only really have to things worth showing, First is a Toucan model I used for my first semester animation assessment. (feet and wings are kinda crappy due to time constraints :()

And second is a moonraker laser model I made a few nights ago

Thanks for your consideration, and if you turn me down, hey, no real loss. Best of luck with the mod.

Hey thanks for applying.  Based on what you've posted, at this point I don't think you're ready for source level work. To be honest, at 6 months I wasn't ready either, so don't feel bad.  Keep practicing and learning and you'll get there.

These are the areas you'll want to become really good at to be a good environment artist.

-Ability to model efficiently with clean topology.
-Ability to properly unwrap and lay out uvs for texturing.
-Ability to texture a model to the quality standards of GES.
-Ability to create proper normal maps from geometry and texture sources.

Once you become proficient in these areas, definitely check back in with us.

Where are you taking classes? Once you start working on texturing skills, check out cgtextures.com, they have a lot of really good photo reference that will really help you when texturing.

Good Luck.
