So what do you think saved him?  The hat? or Just luck?

I say the hat did save him from any serious head injury

It looked like he saw the train, but decided I am behind this truck. That will stop the train.

My first reaction is it looks set up, but that is a lot of money to waste for what would be a stupid idea.

I think because where he was, when the truck hit him they way he fell, he nearly missed getting hit in the head by the bottom of the truck as it was being pushed. Lucky for him he was not 3 feet over or else it wouldn't of mattered as he would of then been ran over by a train.

After the initial hit the truck looks like it passed over him cleanly although it was very close to the wheels.  Also if he had ot moved last second the container would have hit him and squished him.
