Is there a planned date? Or unsure?
If not, any idea if it will be weeks or months or even years?
I have waited ages for this. :( and there have been many updates as I can see. You say you want to get everything finished first, but it is a beta version not a final... =/

I heard it might be next century.

I have the key to beta3, and i just cant be fucked going to the keysmith - so bl thar
-
Well if we told you we would have to kill you. Then we wouldn't have a fan base and wouldn't release.
-
the key to B3 is locked away in a silver globe somewhere in siberia

GO!

where?

Over half a year since the last big update, I think it's safe to say it'll launch simultaneously with Black Mesa.. Sometime between now and Duke Nukem Forever, so it's possibly dead or lying on the ground gasping for air while it slowly bleeds out. At any rate I have some fond memories of playing the beta long long ago and having drawn out knife fights with Cutthroat (to which I always lost by default via throwing knife to the head from 500 feet away... he's not human I tell you).
EDIT: Nevermnd... just saw the 9/27 thread. Been a while since I've been around these parts since I lost my account after the new forums. This mod has a habit of falling dead on it's face and then miraculously getting back up lol.
-
sorry about the whole lack of updates thing, we do kinda suck at getting those out to you guys. the main reason we are slow with updates, is that they take a lot longer to assemble and a bit of work to do them. so we would rather just spend that time and effort actually making the game cause well that's a lot more fun for us haha.
as for us being dead and gasping for air hehe the rumors of our death are greatly exaggerated hehe.
and the reason we want EVERYTHING to be in game for this release, is that we are doing a True beta. which for anyone who works in actually game development knows that means all features will be implemented and testing needs to be done before the game goes gold.
since we don't have a dedicated team of 100 testers playing our game for 16 hours a day during crunch time, we would rather throw it out to you guys to find our minor bugs that we couldn't iron out in pre testing.
not to mention the game has been in the works for far to long to have us let something out this time that isn't totally fantastic and really fun. beta wasn't so hot, alpha same deal fun for a couple weeks then you go back to games that are balanced and good to play. we want people to have fun with GES so they want to keep coming back for more.
now as for a release date... uhh it wont be years i know that much, but it wont be days either haha. we are closer to having the game we set out to build, than we have ever been. and the current game is actually pretty dam fun to play but we know we can squeeze even more fun out of it, and get in the last few features we have wanted too. its been almost 4 years since this thing started, i think you guys can hang on just a little longer to get the game we've all been dreaming of.
-
Would it be a stretch to estimate by the end of the year?
-
I have one real quick question, what happens when Valve releases the updated version of source like what they done with Episode 2, whats gonna happen then?
-
Beta 3 is already using the Episode2 Engine(Orangebox Engine). So when Beta3 is released you won't even need to buy Orangebox, the SDK will just need a update(or something very similar).
The updates have been pretty conservative, the main thing I love about Beta3 is the new look, so in future media releases should get better and better with new ingame shots.
-
After a while you get used to not seeing updates for a while, I'd rather have em just get it done right. We've received rushed product before It's fun for a little while but then you get bored knowing there's more from the original goldeneye you want to see anyway.
Now that the phantom is in this time, I'll be on my toes like I was for the original alpha,
-

ummm, are you serious? PLEASE DONT tell me you guys are going to take yearS with a "s"....frankly, if it isn't done within a year from now...that will kind of make me wonder since it looks like from the gameplay that the foundation is set and all you have to do is throw in achievements and weapons and fix bugs...I don't think that should take 2 years..or even a year. Please, I really hope it wont take that long. That "s" you put on "years" REALLY FREAKISHLY scares me.
Also, by saying a COMPLETE beta..does that mean you are adding EVERY WEAPON IN THE WHOLE GAME before releasing..or do you just mean all the weapons you guys have created as of right now? If that is the case, will the grenade launcher and rocket launcher make it in THIS beta?
-

This project is made by us on our freetime, we don't work in a studio so we don't work on it for 8+ hours a day so get off our backs, we also have lives outside of this mod.
-
I also recall him saying that it won't be years with an "s".

My exact quote was "it wont be years i know that much" thought i was clear on that lol.
For your estimates for how long something should take, to be honest even i don't even know, and I've been with this project for 3 years. we never know when we will hit a lul in development, or when we will hit a peak its unpredictable when your working with people who are making things in their spare time and on a volunteer basis. To be able to give out solid dates on exactly how long things will take is foolish and ignorant on anyone's part including me. we have no clue if monkey will get slammed with work, school, or hell get in a car wreak, then our main programmer would be out, and the project would be literally dead in the water.
Yes a complete beta does mean EVERY WEAPON otherwise that's not complete. and yes that does mean all the weapons we have created... we have finished every single gun in terms of modeling and texturing. i want the grenade launcher and rockets in before the game comes out, but the team could over vote me on that if the rest of the game is golden and we have to have it in a patch. but i really really would push for it, unless it was something like "if we put it in, we have to delay release for 2 months for 2 guns" that wouldn't be cool, but other than that yea i want them in.
with talking with various teammates and their expectations for when things can get done, we have a good idea of when we expect things to be ready to get into your guys hands, but tbh the team never knows 100% for sure. which is why we have to be a bit cryptic about dates. we don't want to disappoint you, and you don't want to be disappointed.

With the Beta 1.0 rush, I understand why you guys don't want to set up a release date again. This is a good decision. Rather, why not release some percentages on what's done til that famous beta 3? It gives your community an approximate idea of where you guys stand in term of dev, and might calm down people like bklax23 ;). This is the way it was done back in 2005, and worked well.

That's why most of the mod out there always have one or two Public Relation dude. GES is probably the only non failing source mod whitout a PR dev...
Oh, and please: work on that nice photoshop art so called website. Should be more up-to-date :/
-
Xanatos is the PR dev, dont ask me why he doesnt do his job anymore, same deal as any other dev i suspect ; better things to do for his time.
At this stage of the mod and this coming beta, it would be over the top to do such things as graphs and percentages. That should be a sign at how far off it may be.
-
The front site is static content which is hard coded. While i was on the team i was pushing for a cms like joomla to be used but the server host scott didnt want it because it was dynamic (well scott these forums are dynamic to!) and thus its hard to update and prob wont be updated all that often.
-
Xanatos is the PR dev
LOL. Good joke.

Im not asking for a shitload of stats, graphs, etc... Just a little estimation on how far from release beta 3 is... 20%? 80%?

in terms of percentages, we would have to go through a check list to see, but most of the stuff is done, weapons are all modeled and textured. some of them need animations, our interface is set. the bulk of the game is in there and running. monkey has a good idea of what the actually percentage is ill have to ask him, or maybe he will chime in.
when Xantos moved onto other things our PR kind of went down hill and the devs tried to cover it as best we could, but again we care more about making the game haha. Sharp is handling the PR stuff now so bug him if you want more info about the project he will talk your ear off haha. better to have us bad at PR, and good at making GES than good at PR and crap at making GES hehe.
-

QFT, but a good game with no one playing it coz of a lack of PR wud be sad.

Agreed.
To be honest i expected more interest in the post about the Beta 3 update but it seems many people have moved on, also im sure many think this mod is dead. Perhaps if PR was present there would be a bigger fan base, then again im not one to criticise the devs decisions regarding that area.
I guess PR is a pain in the arse, still if you want to get more people playing this 'beta 3' get on the PR bandwagon !
Just an opinion :/
-
TBH i think i can speak for the whole team on this, for us its not about the fans haha. fans are a bonus for the project, but we just really want to play an updated version of golden eye. its the teams passion to play this dream game that keeps us going.
we could care less if 1000 people or 300,000 people play the game, we just want to make the best game possible. which i guess is part of our corporate culture, and why we kinda suck about PR hahah.
-
TBH i think i can speak for the whole team on this
I hope you don't. Really.
-
The goal of continuous updates and PR is to make people see the mod. That would increase the number of people playing it, thus you'd get more response on your work and you'd have a better idea on of how you should go on about it. A larger amount of players would also mean more variation for the people that are playing it. Also, a successful mod (one that a lot of people play and know about) would be a great merit if you'd choose to continue to work in the games industry.
I don't criticize you, I'm not particularly good at working with deadlines myself, but the concept of continuous updates is not a stupid one, it's more likely to be a healthy choice for a mod that's coming up. As a dropped out trial member I'm perhaps not the one to talk, but I do wish the best for the mod, and right now I don't see you making the right choices when it comes to PR.
I'd even volounteer if there was such a position. Even if it would only be a weekly update made up from forum tidbits, I'd do it.
-
I take the point of view that improvements can be made, but certainly not by the core developers because they comprise of people that make the mod only and have spider's attitude towards overdoing PR.
There is meant to be a PR helper dev and one was brought on from the 2005-06 tester group, but that isnt the case atm. that is what needs to change ; rather than the insistence that the whole mod team needs to radically change their approach. Let them focus on the assets and im betting the other thing we call PR may be improving soon.

A 3 year running mod? up and coming? not really. This mod is really special, because its ever so popular an idea, but ever so backseat of a passion for most modern gamers once they play it. I think the true potential hasnt been reached because a certain tweaking and perfectionism cant be reached until all the elements are made, and that isnt the case in any public release so far. Time and patience my pets, I've got it have you?

I vote for him ^ ^ ^

The game hasn't gone gold, and I personally think it hasn't proven or distinguished itself yet. And the team (as the GE:S team) hasn't made anything earlier to rely on. At the moment it's HL2 DM with some new maps and skins. I can certainly see the potential in this project, and I know all of the forum goers can. I believe you when you say that the mod will reach new heights with the next release, but the general public doesn't know what to expect, other than it's a remake of that good ol' classic N64 game and that the mod was announced three years ago. Personally, I still think you're the underdogs, and that the mod still has to prove itself, but maybe that's only me romanticizing. If you don't think so, don't pay attention to what I said about the mod "coming up", it really doesn't matter. What I wanted to talk about was PR. Even if the name by itself and "word of mouth" get people to play it, you could still use better PR.
-
Ya we could release a bunch of pointless pictures of props like every other mod. Our media releases are when we feel that we have enough clean finished work to present that is big not small like a random model here and there. Sharp took over the PR position from xanatos as well.
-
Here's a prop I made for Temple if it makes you feel better <3

here's a new view model hand
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/spider2544/Hand_Texture_Render.jpg)
OMGZXZZ leaks
we do need really solid PR, i agree, if someone wants to jump up to that position and proves themselves to be responsible to help out Sharp with organization and writing we are more than willing to listen to a pitch. Xantos left some big shoes to fill hehe. nothing is stopping anyone in our community from going out there and drumming up support for us. (its a great way to get into the team if you get some real noise made haha)
i totally get everyone concern with wanting the mod to be big, we want it to be big too, its just that keeping PR up and keeping the mod on track is really hard, when we do a PR release the whole team has to organize around that, and take our eyes off of production for a bit. and when we are on our way to getting this thing out the door, that's not something i want everyone to be doing really often.
Dr.No its better that GES is full of people who are passionate and crazy about making the game, rather than being full of a bunch of dudes who love to hear the roar of a crowd every time we release a picture of a prop. i know that PR is important, and can help everyone on the team and the community at large, but right now its not at the foreground for the team. when the game is done we will try to media blitz as best we can, and hopefully we have a great game that people love to talk about and word spreads about how fun it is. because our past 2 releases we had quite a big buzz around them, but the game was sort of a flop on gameplay, i would rather have a bad ass game and a small number of people playing at first that will grow, rather than a big number in the beginning that turns into hardly anyone playing 1 month later.
-
Here's a prop I made for Temple if it makes you feel better <3
Strangly... I do feal better ;D !
Hey guys I have an idea. Why just not wait for the release? God damnit, we are able to wait!!! Stop crying and let the developpers work, that's all. And when the beta 3 will come out, we are all gonna be happy.
That's it. Nothing more to say.
-
I think we need to just start slowly fixing this. I think the first thing would be redesigning the homepage, so it can except the frequent updates, and would be very easy to update.
Next step would be a dedicated PR guy that sift threw all the content and make it seem very exciting and keep it up on a regular basis(maybe one every 2 weeks, or maybe just a big one every month) and give him maybe a little blog and he could just post screenshots of playtests or general feeling for the mod, or his reaction to a test and show the public that its moving the right way(being tested, a lot).
last maybe as suggested a progress counter that would show the progress for the release. A lot like Mario Cart Source (http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/2519/51724491vl9.png) (http://imageshack.us)
-
Ever since I first started playing GE: Source, I've had several people ask if this TC is dead.
I always say "Nope. Not at all. BETA 3, bitches!"
Then I just type "GoldenEye Source.com. Check the forums."
^^
-
At the moment it's HL2 DM with some new maps and skins.
I don't think you have played HL2DM recently then because this mod is nothing like that. I have written over 10,000 lines of code for this mod and probably have another 10,000 to go before the release (no that does not mean its 50% done more like 65-70%). We have implemented a lot of brand new features in Beta 3 already and expect more to come soon. With the demand for interactive and meaningful video games these days it is extremely difficult to deliver the results. You have to realize that we cannot make a game from complete scratch that is impossible let alone never going to be released lol.
-
BTW that's 65% on the code side, and implemented features.
our content is further along that that, a lot of the levels are at or near final stages (but they are always doing tweaks and tune ups)
and all the guns are done (some are getting face lifts like characters)
and that's 65% is what monkey has done in the past few months since he got back from being out to sea, so stuffs moving really fast, some people will do the math and get their own estimates from that hehe.
also the game could go public before we hit the full 100% code side (Content side i want it at or very close to 100%) it just depends on what the game is like as it gets close to the end.
-
...we also have lives outside of this mod.
Losers!
-
TBH i think i can speak for the whole team on this, for us its not about the fans haha. fans are a bonus for the project, but we just really want to play an updated version of golden eye. its the teams passion to play this dream game that keeps us going.
Understood :/ Quick question will you guys be playing in public servers when you release the mod ? If possible i'd change your names, the many many months of constant waiting is going to create an angry mob of people that will make your playing experience a frustrating one. Or maybe i'm just relating that to myself :/
God i love changing the mood.
Last post from me until the release, i'll be looking for you devs in game :/
-
I just do it because it's a fun project, I love goldeneye and it's a nice portfolio booster, to say it's not about the fans though isn't entirely true. It always good to know that something we're making is actually being anticipated by somebody else. Obviously if we were working in a professional studio or had some sort of financial backing to be working on this full time I would jump on that no problem, it's just that the reality is all of us have to do things (work, school) that allow us to continue working on this project. It is super fucking rad to have so many people enjoy what we're doing, we're just unable to cater to public demands simply because development is "when we can".
So thanks for stickin with us

This is exactly what I'm talking about. You keep calling these kind of bits unimportant and too-small-to-mention-props, personally I'd love some weekly updates with these kind of pictures. That is what I can say from a personal standpoint, I don't know how other people would react to finished and skinned props as "news". If you find this kind of information more likely to be hurtful PR than a way of drumming up anticipation, I can accept that, all I know is that I, personally, would love those images on the front page. It's quality stuff.
If I got to fill up this position, I would squeeze every one of you for pictures, every week. And if I didn't have any real news, I'd make up some faux ones. Obviously those news posts would contain a lot of material that isn't written text, some might find my English charming, but I wouldn't rely on the words. Here are some I came up with right now: "The Top 3 ugliest models of the original N64 game", "Weapon comparisons", "Flowcharts of the original maps", "Will They Get Shut Down", "What do the music guy/coding guy/modelling guy/animation guy/texture guy/sound guy/mapping guy think about this/that", "Other inspirations than the original game", "Best and worst ideas", "Dwayne, the butt-head guard", "The new Bond game will suck, therefore, download this mod instead", etc etc etc . Before the release of each news post I'd ask one of you the green it first. That is what I think should be done on the official home page, of course there's always more to do when it comes to PR.
In relation to first topic, this is a wallpaper that'd be posted:
It's nothing big, but it is original content, it's somewhat humorous, it would relate to the original game as well as the mod. "Why was Dwayne in the original game, will he be in the new one, will Natalya, also a notoriously ugly character in the original game, look good in the new one?"

Yay... I dunno why, but I alway wanted to play as Natalya.
... she's not sexy as Xenia but hey...
-
Hell, I never found the ge64 Natalya to be sexy at all (or even how Izabella Scorupco looked in the movie for that matter) but this model looks great with the modernized clothing and look... great work!
If you guys can make Natalya look this good, I can only imagine what Xenia would look like...
And the funny thing is that I'm saying this before I've even seen the head portion
-
Those are really old screenshots of natalya (15 months?), he is drunk while posting those screen until his last post LOL <3 you loaf. Maybe i think loaf should be banned from posting when on the whiskey >.>
" omgfgzz yuo giys her is reopistory detalies!!@!2 thissei is madie fo WIM!!!!! :D "
Expect much hotter and refined natalya in the game itself. I know hes got betta
-
at least he was drunk posting and not drunk dailing.

This thread turned quickly from great to even greater. Lovely model, wouldn't hesitate for a second to include it in a news post. It's quite interesting to see how good you are, both your models and your maps are really something.
As I think you know (with IP logging and all that), I was a trial member before, I think my nick was Jahakob or something similar, I made a Connery face and a sauna which wasn't finished. The reason that I left is not because of that misunderstood joke but I felt that the quality of my work wasn't up to par with the rest of the team. It isn't about critique, critique and criticism is very important to me. If you think I can be of use, PM me about it. As there is no "news writer" positions to apply for, it's up to you to scan the surroundings for interested individuals. I am interested, now you now. In the future I may apply for something more obvious, like prop modeler, but not right now. And in my defense, I have visited this forum continuously since I found it, I never really left.
