Technically, it's a rumor since there hasn't been any announcement yet, but speaking with people within the company sounds good enough for me, and it's from a reliable source.
"Talking with very reliable sources, and seeing evidence ourselves, Xbox Evolved believes that Microsoft, Rareware, MGM Studios (studio that makes the James Bond 007 movies) and Activision (holds the license for James Bond 007 titles right now) have come to an agreement to bring the Rareware developed Goldeneye 007 out to Xbox Live Arcade shortly before the new game developed by Activision is released.
The title will feature updated graphics, and of course an all-new Xbox Live multiplayer. Not only that, but we have found evidence that Rareware is planning on releasing even more of their back catalog onto Xbox Live Arcade, specifically, Perfect Dark and the original Banjo-Kazooie. Expect more on at least Goldeneye 007 later this year."

Furthermore to support this, even if you don't believe they saw evidence, a few others like SurferGirl and EGM have said they heard from insiders that this is coming to the xbla as well. So... >=)

You had me sexually excited for a second...

This is good stuff, thanks for the news by the way. ;D

o_O
time to buy an xbox!

I hope I get a 360 tonight for my birthday ;D

Even though we already got all this info, I think this makes it even more reliable. The bolded part. The side project? This. The main project, a new, next-gen game. http://forums.goldeneyesource.com/index.php/topic,1277.0.html
Contrary to past efforts, Kottick expressed his confidence in Activision's ability to return the Bond franchise to form. "We have our best development studios working on the product, we have a second team working on another Bond product and we're putting great resources against it," Kottick said. " Bond is one of the great videogame franchises of all time and that really was a result of Golden Eye. I think the key to re-energising the Bond franchise is going to be ultimately the highest possible game quality."

Sorry for the bump, but here is the alleged first screenshot.
720p version: http://mundorare.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/goldeneye-xbox-live-remake.jpg

This special edition supposedly included, among others, the following features:
* Flawless recreation of the original gameplay. The game used the original code, running on an Xbox 360.
* Solid 60 frames a second.
* High definition graphics with the option to switch back to the original N64 graphics any time.
* Four-way online split-screen multiplayer, with the option to see what the other three players can see, even over Live.
* New multiplayer maps, including the single player Dam, Depot or Frigate levels as multiplayer arenas.
-
I don't see Crysis-era graphics... If you're going to make a remake, you have to exceed in every way, or people will go back to the original.
-
It's not a full blown remake, if it was it'd be a seperate game. This is for the Xbox Live Arcade with the following feature sets in addition to what has already been said.

Right, basically porting it over with improved frame rate and a few more options, sounds worthwhile to me, I'll end up buying a crapbox to play it I'm sure... Any idea on a release date? 2008?

But it's far behind the possibilities. And I Think it could be also a fake screen.
I once read in the Official Bond Book that Nintendo has the Rights on the Goldeneye Game (not the Bond licence just the rights on this Game).
But who knows what's going on behinde the sceens.

If they had rights to the game it would already be on virtual console. If it is a fake screenshot it is a very elaborate fake. Another thing is rare made sequels for games that they made under nintendo for the xbox and 360. Games that come to mind are the new Banjo game coming out and Perfect Dark. Perfect dark was published by rare, but banjo was published by nintendo. So there are some possibilities that this may be true and they found a loophole or when the license transfered to activision it changed something. I would love to see this on the 360 compared to the wii's virtual console. I have a wii and the classic controllers are basically a joke and I wouldn't want to play it with a wiimote or a gamecube controller. Either or I can play it because I have a 360 and a wii. Or no one will because it won't be released and we will just have to fire up the old n64 or emulators and play.

That screenshot makes it look like medal of honor allied assault quality. This seems like an unlikely occurance, but it's not a bad thing. Shocks me that they would put that much work into it, though.

Like I said, we'll end up going back. Graphics aren't a big deal for me, evidentially lower than audio, gameplay, and lastablitiy, but you have to improve it since you're getting another shot at it.
-
I really want a 360, this just adds to the hours I could spend playing it.

Seems you have found the answer as to why Microsoft still sells product. :P

Oh well
So long (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165391)

*Sigh*
Guess it was too much to ask for the XBOX teams pockets to be a little shallower than normal.

Don't give up on this yet. http://www.petitiononline.com/rare007/petition.html (http://www.petitiononline.com/rare007/petition.html) We currently have 1122 signatures to revive the project. As the 1up article said, in order to get this back in development we need to show Microsoft and Nintendo that we want it.
-
No it's not just that, the reason the game was canceled was they couldn't decide on a way to split the profits, that and Nintendo doesn't want to see that game on anything but virtual console, and Microsoft wants it on their xbox live arcade line up. Rival companies are not going to agree on anything or make sacrifices. By the looks of it no one is going to get it. The situation is just a bad one, Rare owned by Microsoft, Nintendo the publisher of the original, and Activision who has the rights to making or distributing an game with a bond name. So a petition would not do much at all to help the situation. It is now just between the two companies arguing over money and a game, and another just wanting to make a game, so don't get your hopes up.
-
But if they do release it on xbla, will it still have the nintendo logo thing when u start the game? or would microsoft change it?
Anyways i think if they are going to do a proper remake, or just fix up the graphics of the old game a bit, they should also go and see Free Radical Design, because most of the guys there made goldeneye 64 what it was (and David Doak was in the game), and it shows in their games like timesplitters 2 etc. (i mean the feel of the game). Anyways who would want rare working on a game these days? they used to be good, but now they are shit, as they have proved with perfect dark zero (which is one of the worst games i have ever played).
-
They got all of rare's assets from the original so it would be a complete and proper remake.
-
...anyways i think nintendo and microsoft should stop arguing over who gets the money and just give the fans what they want.
-
2,207 Signatures at the time of this post. We are starting to get somewhere... it worked for the Bioshock collectors edition, why not goldeneye!? :p

Saiz already explained why....

Fack.. just because of the money?
Bunch of Micro$oft cheap jews.. No offense nowhere

Saiz already explained why....
Not really.
Put enough money on the table and someone will bite. Nintendo wants a percentage of money from every copy sold on XBLA. Microsoft wants to pay one flat fee to Nintendo and then keep all the money from the game's sales. They couldn't reach a compromise, so they canceled it.
It doesn't have to be that way. If the consumers (us) show enough interest in the product then someone is going to realize that there's good money to be made here for everyone involved.
I was one of the first 100 signers on that petition, lol. Sure they usually amount to nothing, but I would hope that everyone who is interested in a project like Goldeneye Source enough to post on our boards would at least take 15 seconds to sign that petition. I intend to write some emails, and make some phone calls / written letters if possible as well.
Almost 5000 signatures and rising! Sign away... http://www.petitiononline.com/rare007/petition.html (http://www.petitiononline.com/rare007/petition.html)

Agreed. News sites are jumping in now showing support like Xbox360Fanboy - http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/01/13/fanboys-unite-to-bring-goldeneye-007-to-the-xbla/
With this attention, it's bound to get tons of signatures, in fact it's over 8,500! :)
[edit] Microsoft says it's Nintendo's fault not theirs (according to Kotaku's source): http://kotaku.com/344324/goldeneye-xbla-shitcanning-was-nintendos-fault
PS: Over 12,700 Signatures now :)
Major Nelson from Xbox posted this on the Twitter of his blog My inbox has a lot of 'Save Goldeneye' emails. I will be sure topass them on to the right people.

Money rules the World... .
IMO the best agreement for the Gamers would be:
1. Nintendo doesn't get a single Penny for it, but...
2. M$ must bring the Game also onto the Wii-WareChannel.
So everyone could make it's own money out of it and a much more People could play Goldeneye.
But this Time I think M$ would deny.
So the only Thing we can do is sign the pettition, hope for the best but expecting the worst.
.... oh yea, and going on with this Mod. So we can play Goldeneye no matter how the Big Chiefs at M$ and Nintendo decideing.
-
That was the alleged deal by the guy who got the screenshot, but that one guy from Nintendo (sorry I posted it earlier, can't remember at the moment, but it's not reggie - he's all for the idea) said no to activision. Activision could allow it without them, but they want to stay on good terms with Nintendo. *shrug*
