HL2: Orange Box is going to be epic.
Title: Re: PORTALOL
Post by: VC on October 04, 2007, 03:47:58 am
I dunno.  They're buffing the HL2 sales figures by packing it in and selling to people who already have it.  Ep 1 was kinda cute, but I felt really screwed when I realised that trivial battle was the big finish.  (The sheet metal caused me to get blown up more than the foe)  TF2 is amusing but it doesn't really hook me.  Portal is an unknown quantity, and that's pretty much the kaboodle.

eh, for $45 3 games is fine by me, plus the 2 I can give away
Title: Re: PORTALOL
Post by: Polizei on October 04, 2007, 06:54:06 am
Put the games in another account and then you can lend that account out to friends. If they do decide to buy the orange box as a result, they will not be pissed that they are "buying HL2 over again" because it's still yours. You can repeat this with many friends.

Hence, you are an unpaid salesman who fights to keep Gabe's KFC bucket filled.

What's to do when tonnes of people have these loaner HL2 accounts?  Use them to get people to try out GES or something?  Naaah.

I'm sure everyone has a friend who would love HL2 but just won't bother to pay for it. Some of us even have several friends in the same position. You're not so much a salesman as a pusher; as D.A.R.E. taught us, peer pressure only leads to good things/supporting terror. So where would you rather your dollar go? Paying the bills? Why not do something flashy, something with pizzaz? 50/50 shot, KFC or WW3. It's win/win. And your friends get to play, too! It's more like win/win/win.

Well just think of it valve is actually pretty smart. You buy the orange box already owning hl2 and ep1. You give your keys to a friend he/she plays through them and says wow this is a great series. They buy the orange box and pass along their extra keys and so on and so forth. The steam population is going to be exponentially growing after the orange box release on pc. Console idiots don't get steam :)

Post by: Polizei on October 04, 2007, 08:48:08 pm
I think the complaint is that this is an evil business tactic. There's no question in anyone's mind that valve has that intent, the preloading page itself suggests you gift the copies. I am merely presenting a workaround that gives you yourself more control over who is being brought into the steam community.

The thing you have to ask yourself is, is portal, tf2, and ep2 worth $45?  For me, its a definite yes.  Hl2 and ep1 are just free games thrown in.  Valve just had shitty timing and screwed it up with the black box.  If they had never  announced the black box, and just said, these 3 games for 45 bucks, plus we are giving everyone who buys it hl2 and ep1 for free, they would be been welcomed with open arms.  But because of their timing, they make it look like they are charging gamers for extra stuff.  It is really an awesome deal for everyone involved if you ignore the timing and just look at the value proposition.  If you only like 1 of the games, just buy it separately, but if you like 2 or more of them, the orange box is a pretty damn good deal.

I totally agree. I would even seriously consider paying more because I have a video game problem. Considering I never bought Ep 1, it's "free" inclusion makes me <3 valve more.

9 is the estimate but most people just fly through games not paying attention to some stuff

Some people play it like they were trying to save the world and not be eaten by zombies rather than wandering around wearing loud "Hawaiian" T-Shirts, oversized sunglasses, and disposable cameras going OOOOH at all the "sights."

....GAHAHAHA

I think you linked me that the other day but I closed out of it.

Anyway, they said EP1 was four hours, and I was goofing around and listening to kleiner the whole time and all that stuff, it still didn't take much more than two. So cut their estimate in half.

i'll be playing this weekend hopefully if I can fix my comp's cooling issue...at least I think it's a cooling issue.

It took me 2 days to beat Portal due to overheating graphics card. It dragged the game out though.

The end song is great.

I'm getting the extract in ep2 (Not really a spoiler). Haven't experienced a lot the hyped stuff, but so far everything looks great.

I still think the portals in prey simply felt better.  This was more fun though.
Title: Re: PORTALOL
Post by: VC on October 13, 2007, 11:16:47 pm
Was Prey designed from the ground up to use portal effects? Because Valve, of course, hacked it into their current engine.  In the commentary they even admit they couldn't get it efficient and effective so they gave up and used object cloning to have two instances of something that is touching the portals' fields.  Hax.

Fun: Put a portal on a wall with the other portal on the floor right beneath it, and drop in a (companion) cube. More amusing to watch than earning the 30,000 feet award.

No. This violates the Steam Subscriber Agreement and may result in having your account disabled.

Ebay users is copping it from a lot of vendors. So much so 10% of its bid populus will probly wander over time from constant violations and voids.

I dont understand it myself, you cant for instance sell rare tickets for U2 on there, but you can sell an elvis mug you purchased from a yard sale in the 70's as a valued elvis collectable and you dont see graceland rolling in saying "omgz its priceless we dont have those anymore we need for museums!! you are denied your mug infidel against the king"

Some people would believe it worth a ticket to U2 for 20,000$ just as much as a used mug with a faded elvis on it. heh

The free market is for direct sales from industry to consumer and noone is to leech off of that by getting in the middle of things and reselling the goods without doing any work at all! Unless they are any retailer in the world, in which case it is okay because shut up ebay is wrong.
