Did any of you try to camp for the PS3, or the Nintendo Wii (Later on) yet? I lostabout 20 bucks from gas money, and 20 bucks from ps3stocktracker.com. Not to mention around 9 hours of time I could have been working. I guess I under-estimated my chances of getting a PS3. We head out at 7:00 AM EST. Here is what happened at each store:
(At Target) From what I could tell... The manager at my local Target got a group of his friends together to camp for the PS3, thus limiting the chance of others getting one to an absolute zero. Very fucking lame, and in my opinion illegal.
(At Circuit city) There was a  group of family members that all knew each other but denied it. There was 10 units available, and 11 family members and friends. I asked the manager at CC why they allowed more than (1) unit per household, and he said, "There is no way to prove it" Absolute crap... left after 20 minutes.
The worst part of the story: (CompUSA) A group of FOUR redneck friends snugged in a corner with a foul mouthed preteen (they were not even in a line!) Some asshole's son said, "We have 9 of us total, and 5 of us are in the store. Too late bitches!" My brother went in and asked the manager how many units they were getting in, and he said, "Exactly 9"... My bro also asked what their policy was about line formations, etc.
The manager replied, "First come, first serve basis." I decided to camp there while my bro went to look for more locations. The jerk's son kept shouting shit at me for an entire half-hour! I asked him to tell his son to please stop on too many occasions, and he said, "fuck off, you've already lost!" I took the chance, and went to talk to the manager about their misconduct, and was told to call the cops in a laughing manner... I went back, and you have probably guessed... The rest of their clan shows up in a van. There was no chance of me getting a PS3 from this place. I was overly pissed off.
What could I do? I wanted to camp out there, but I knew I had little to no chance of getting a PS3 to resell. They had lawn chairs setup for friends to arrive. They were not in a line, and the manager did not give a rat's ass. We checked out several other retailers and by that time it was already too late. I don't want to give the details of the other stores, but they were ALMOST as equally bad.
I was almost able to get 2 units off the web, but found out it was a huge scam before even entering my information.. Do not use ps3stocktracker.com
(Long story short most of the campers were large groups of friends and family members reserving spots for their friends. Leaving no chance for others to get a PS3. Making another pretty craptastic day for MetalLizard) All I wanted to do was get just one to resell on eBay to go towards my college fund, or a new car. Guess I'll have to stick to painting for a few more weeks. =(

lol, no.  Sony is a steamer and I minimise the amount of money that I put in their pot.  And good for you, -$40 outright and -$90ish potential is good reward for encouraging the practice of artificial scarcity to increase buzz around a glorified etch-a-sketch.

Ouch!
I'm getting the wii, altho I'm pre-ordering mine the minute it becomes available from amazon :P it's out on the 8th in England but pre-orders start on Tuesday

			-
				haha @ ViaC
I personally would never camp, camping denotes that im EAGER to blow 700 bucks on something i 'might' enjoy. I'd be more safe with a 200 buck hooker.
I also noticed in your post ML you mentioned that rednecks were present, i thought id never see the day when they stopped buying real guns to buy fake ones just coz they are less expensive, what happened to good ole days of whoring your no-toothed wife?  ::)

			-
The only time i've ever camped was outside a games store that was opening up at midnight to early release Halo 2 lol.
I'm so glad i'm not a camper.. I believe i'll get it eventually but camping for a console is something i wouldn't do but i guess your reasons are feasable  ;D

			-
Ouch. That sucks man. I hope you find one, but the chances of that now are pretty much zero. I've heard reports of some stores still having like 20 PS3's in stock, and nobody coming to get them, mostly smaller towns (not really sure why they would get so many), but yeah.
I would just wait a few weeks, or months before really attempting to get one, cause otherwise your just going to run into ebay'ers right now, who just want to buy 3-4 (or more) so they can sell them on ebay for $1,200+.
Good luck.

			-
Hey, good luck with the funding, you can always take a few years off from school, wait in line for a ps4 (set up your spot now and you might just get to cuss them out next time around!), and then use it to pay your tuition/home/solid gold rocketship.

			-
I'm getting it, but when its commonly available. By than there will be more games anyway.

			-
				i may get a ps3, but i really doubt it - i mean i have a ps2 that's just doing nothing, i'm gonna sell that soon.

I know the people who made this video personally. Look at #3 on their member list. Joined 08 Oct 2005, and I am the one who posted the smash my Ipod link in the old GE:S forums. They are a great bunch of guys, but I'll have to admit a little bit weak with the sledge. I can't wait for their Nintendo Wii video.

			-
PS3 smash is well worth it.   it is a POS and a waste of cash.   I am more than happy to see 400,000 - 1 units in NA.   Smashing a Wii is pointless because supply is huge!

			-
PS3 is too expensive for my tastes, because, as I said earlier, I am a cheapskate.  Looks really good though, but I'd rather get the Wii.

			-
I might get it eventually if it has a bunch of good nonmultiplatform games. I don't want to pay 599 US DOLLARS.
But I'm not that happy its in short supply, I wasn't going to get one right away, or maybe even for a long time, but there are people who do want it that shouldn't have to camp out.
Besides giant enemy crab (MORE LIKE GIANT ENEMY PS3 M I RITE??? LOLOLOL) will attack your weak point for MASSIVE DAMAGE!!!!!!!!!!

you know i just got to thinking about something with the PS3
sony right now is estimated to be loseing around 300 dollars per system right.
and aprox 1 in 4 PS3s are on Ebay right now selling for around 1k-1.5k a peice... wouldnt it be funny if sony was paying employees or setting up places for them to be ebaying PS3s for them so they could be selling the PS3s at a profit, and just short change all the retailers. casue the retailers arent ever really going to know how many systems each others companys got so that would actualy work hahah.

			-
If they did that and someone found out people would probably get mad.
I would laugh though.

			-
Pretty sure that theory is at least 10 shades of illegal lol all genius plots have some elment of legal issue tho

			-
That would not only break several laws, but it would also be incredibly stupid. The PS3/PSP has cost the gaming department of Sony upwards of 100 million. Sony doesn't want to just make 1,000$ a console they want more people to have them. To think about this logically you have to think about why the PS3s are fetching so much on eBay, it's because there's so few PS3s. Why would Sony want to sell fewer PS3s just so they could make a tiny bit of extra money?

			-
yeah, no kidding. although that sort of thing would be quite surprising to find, a huge company like sony selling consoles on eBay so they're no longer making a loss. haha :)

They would still be losing money though, that's one of my points.

Don't forget this can also be seen as costs for promoting the Blu-Ray for the PS3 and UMD for the PSP.

no theres nothing illegal about that at all, they can sell their product in ANYmarket they please. and if there were laws about that, they could sell 20k PS3s to an employee and have him sell them all to get around any wacky laws that most likely arent even on the books. (just cause its not fair doesnt mean its not illegal)
if the system right now is costing them 900 bucks to make, and they are selling for around 1500 per system at final bid on average. they are making a profit of 600 bucks per system sold when i checked last night they ahad around 27,000 up, if sony had just Ebayed all of those (of coursse the didnt) thats 12,000,000 in profit.... not to bad considering they are losing a crap load per system. i think it would have been a good strateige for them to do that themselves instead of having the consumers do it for them and they lose out. free market can be a real bitch sometimes hahah.
sony wouldnt bee selling fewer systems, they would be selling the same amount of systems at a higher price. simply put no matter what the price of the PS3 for the amount they had... they are going to sell out of every last one of them for sure even on Ebay.

Actually, I'm almost 100% sure that it would break some trust law. They said # of consoles at launch and if they purposefully lower that number so that they could make more for selling them on eBay, then I'm betting that would be illegal.
Let me put what I was trying to say this way: Sony's ultimate goal with the PS3 is market penetration, they want to sell as many as they can put simply. The reason PS3s are getting so much money on eBay is because there aren't that many. If Sony had produced a crapload of them, then yes, they would probably still sellout but they definitely wouldn't fetch as much on eBay. Hence it would make no sense for Sony to want to lower the number of consoles they sell at launch just so they could get a little bit more money by selling them on eBay. Sony would've definitely rathered to have a lot of them produced than to have this shortage and markup on eBay.

			-
Its basic economics.   Supply vs Demand.
Supply = Low
Demand = High
Cost = Cant change..  normaly will
Re-sale cost = Sky rockets.

			-
Exactly Enzo, and Sony wants Supply and Demand to be high. They don't want Supply to be low, especially not when the demand is highest. That's why it would make no sense for them to purposefully lower the amount of consoles available to make a tiny bit of money.

			-
:: They don't want Supply to be low, especially not when the demand is highest. That's why it would make no sense for them to purposefully lower the amount of consoles available to make a tiny bit of money.
Not necessarily.
Let's look at it the Viacvian way: Sony could make more PS3s and put them out if they really wanted to because they're big enough, so why don't they?"
Right now, they have no competition.  360 is already out and established, and Revolution is still a ways off, so they have the Shiny New Toy market right now.  They are the only Shiny New Toy, and will be for a while.  As long as they are the only Shiny New Toy, they have the market cornered.
Sony is taking a hit on every unit; printer manufacturers take a hit on every unit.  Printer companies earn profit on ink, Sony must earn profit on game sales.  To sell games, you need game contracts.  You need to tell game studios you have a strong, enduring product.  One that will create a large userbase to buy lots of games.
Which sounds better:
"We sold out opening day, and now we move a few units every week."
"We've sold out every day for the first month! People camp out in line before stores open for the first two weeks! We're on the news because of the media frenzy!  People are paying sixteen grand to get a console to play YOUR NEW BLOCKBUSTER GAME, {EA/Ubisoft/whatever}!"
We've discovered something.  Sony makes PS3 look bigger than it is, by abusing metrics of popularity.  PS3 (artificially) sells out every day, starting from release until they eventually satiate the market.  PS3 gets on TV, newspapers, and Goldeneye Source Forums.  Sony doesn't care about making money off of PS3 and we know this because they sell at a loss, so I ask you, nowhere, why wouldn't they want to have low supply when demand is high?  They sell more they LOSE MORE because each unit is -$300!  They want to choke sales and spread those losses out over the coming weeks, while buiding investment in Buzz, Popularity, and Attention from the mass media, so they can get the game studios to sign exclusives to Sony and not to Nintendo, who's known for going for exclusive contracts and using them to dominate whenever possible.
Remember, they are the only Shiny New Toy on the market, and will be until Revolution comes around the corner.  Their best strategy is to exploit their solitary position to get the contracts and distribute their losses, so when Revolution comes out, PS3 will have the game catalogue to stay competitive.
At least, that's what I think.

			-
The Wii is coming out in an hour and a half. So how long do they get to be the newest toy on the market? Let's see.... 2 days. They would probably need a month to accomplish what you're describing, plus, even if they had made 3-4 million PS3s for launch they would still have sold out and you're telling me Sony would rather make 300-500 thousand available at launch? So you think Sony would rather say "We've sold 350,000 units" while the 360 and the Wii have sold in the millions?

			-
I was unaware of Revolution's release date.  Nonetheless, I still believe they have the right position.  If they can keep the PS3 buzz at full volume, they can squelch Revolution's introduction, and first-mover advantage is in Sony's court.  I recall seeing a report that Revolution would only have 400k units availiable, rather than the 1M figure I heard in the past.  That gives Sony an opening to hold on to prospects who would go with either unit, since there won't be a massive supply of Revolutions to draw them away.
And yes, Sony would rather sell out at a lower number for a duration than at a higher number for a short period.  They can say "look, we're still selling out weeks after release, despite the competition, because we're the best!"  This is not an issue of profit and sales today, it's an issue of marketing.  Consoles are cash cows that you milk steadily for a couple years by selling games, not here-today-gone-tomorrow flash in the pans that pay for themselves and pay for the here-tomorrow product that replaces them.

			-
The Wii is definitely going to have 1M+ systems available. The Toys R' Us where they're holding the Wii release launch supposedly has 7,000 of them in stock. The stores the PS3 launched from had 500.
I know that they would rather have them sell out at a lower number for a duration than at a higher number for a shorter period, but I also believe that they would sell out even if they had produced more of them for the launch and subsequent months. Especially since holiday season is just starting. I think that the Wii will sell out at launch and keep selling out for the rest of the year, so when Sony says "Look we've been selling out constantly" Nintendo will just reply with "We've been selling out too, but we've moved a million more systems"

Too much reading, too much of my information being unreliable, for one night.  I'll just take a being-wrong this time and wait on the next game system.

If you change it to Golden Palace, they'll give you a lot of money.
OT: This board seems to suck at showing placeholders where inlined images live.  Usually with images off in Opera I get a box with alt-text in it; everything works that way (avatars, buttons, &c) except this inlined image. >_>

			-
They only reason I would get a PS3 is for the PSP compatibility.  What sucks is that you have to update your PSP to 3.0+, and that means no homebrew until it is hacked :(

Just thought I'd kick start this thread again. So, what does everyone think about Killzone 2 now that there is a demo available, to UK PSN's, and it's soon be hitting the shelves.

Well it's funny reading back up on this topic.  I actually do own a PS3 by the way.  PSN: mbsurfer
Also, as for Killzone 2 I'm downloading the demo now along with Resident Evil 5.  Both look promising.
EDIT: A bit back on topic from a year or two ago ^^ Nowhere can be seen in the actual Smash My Wii video yelling "GoldenyeSource.com" with that sign above.  Check it. (http://www.krayvee.com/movie.php?id=225)

What's wrong with that guy smashing a Wii. I mean if he's got to much money, he better give it to someone who needs it.
I dislike this rediculess destruction of something just to get some attention.
Did nowhere know about what the guy's going to do?

Well that site probably turned that $300 or however much that Wii cost by 10 fold.  If not more.

Anyone tried that Flower game? I bought it today and its great.   It's a nice and welcome change from all the killing and beating thats goes on in most games these days.
It is surprisignly addictive and best of all calming.
