hello everybody,
it`s just an idea, but today I saw The Man with the golden gun again and I thought that Scaramanga`s training room would be perfect for a small multiplayer-map, especially for a little golden gun round-fight. there´s a little bay in front of the house, where the player could start from without any weapons. then the player walks up the stairs into the house ( which is very detailed shown in the movie ). the spectacle begins in the living room: suddenly there`s a red light and pure darkness afterwards, with some spooky and crazy illusions coming around and puppets of james bond, cowboys and the mob shooting. at the same time, you hear someone´s laughin over the loudspeakers. just like in the movie, the player must find the golden gun somewhere in this house of madness and kill the other players. then the round ends.

what do you think of this idea ? and do you think, it would be too difficult to create something like this ?

There was a map called Funhouse in Goldeneye Rouge Agent Multiplayer.
Maybe it can get a remake in GES.

Unfortnately I don't know the map Kraid mentioned, since I never played Rogue Agent, but Cy's idea sounds nice.
But instead of 10 players on a map looking for the golden gun I think it would be way cooler to have 2 player shootouts.
For example there are like 20 players connected to the server.
There would be 10 different "arenas" they could play in 1 on 1.
Both players in each duel would start out with a silenced PP7 but in each arena there would be a golden gun randomly spawned and the players would be put in the arenas randomly, so they wouldn't always know in which arena they were fighting and so they could hardly tell the possible golden gun spot. A round ends when either the time is up or there's only 1 player alive in each arena.
Now it's 10 players in 5 arenas, followed by 5 players in 3 (one player advances to the next round for free at random or dependant on the time he needed to win the previous round compared to the others or the amount of damage he took himself or something like that) 3 in 2 and 2 in 1 until a winner is determined.
Of course these arenas would have to include some random psychedelic effects like randomly flashing lights in different colors (maybe even spotlights on both players), mirrors, moving objects (like these cowboy puppets in the movie) and laughter so players who would get scared would give away their locations to the others when they startetd shooting at the puppets or mirrors.

Or, players start one vs one, and the winner can be teleported to another room, one vs one, and then teleported to another room, one vs one, and so on until hte 5th room, that would be cool! And possible

VS CPU players it would indeed make a good training session that way ~
The possible problem I see in doing it the teleportation way is this:
If it's like there's only 2 players facing each other and the winner is teleported to another room where another player THEN spawns, most players would have to wait a long time, furthermore you'd (possibly) have to make the player regain health and lose his golden gun (because it would be unfair otherwhise).
If it's like whenever a player wins a duel he's teleported then you'll have the following problem: a player finishing his duel way faster would still have to lose his golden gun but also he would have more time to find the golden gun in the new arena and could already be holding it when his enemy is teleported in there -> the first player would have to be frozen in place until his enemy shows up.
So if you do it the second way, you could go for roundbased action.
Although I'd like to mention that maybe some achievements should be disabled for this game mode, since it's easier to obtain them, because it's always 1 on 1 with full health.
EDIT:
Limited ammo should keep players from spraying, let's say max 3 or 4 clips of ammunition in total.
For a possible training mode (when AI is implemented in future) you could use Trent Easton from Perfect Dark as Lvl 5 bot model (or as an unlockable superbot combined with an achievement if you beat him, maybe even give the player the ability to select him in multiplayer when you beat him)

I said single map, not singleplayer map. This would be multiplayer, not vs CPU Ai.

if you are good with triggers you can force weapon spawns, and not making them spawn at all, I.E. "point_template". The scenario i spoke of is pretty easy to implement, but yes, the players who win the rounds would need to wait a little bit.

This would have to be a map and gameplay pairing. Wouldn't be impossible, but definitely not possible on _every_ map.
This would be a fun 3rd party gameplay, not in an official release though (too many server criteria)

What about having a specific prefix to the mapname which in turn causes the server to load only this specific game mode for maps that are designed for it?
Respectively relinking the game mode dependant on the prefix, so no matter what game mode is specified serverside when the map loads, only this game mode can be and is called/no others can be accessed.
You could have a file telling the server which maps are playable in this game mode.
I thought of these solutions because other game modes would be useless to a map designed for this game mode unless you'd do it via triggers as SharpSh00tah proposed.
Anyway, it still would be a lot of work, if it is doable.
Just out of curiousity: what other server criteria would be important?

Well the blocking of our built-in gameplay randomization / cycle would have to happen. Prefixing is a nice solution, but wholesale blocking of gameplays is not. I dunno, if you produce the map I will produce the support for it, how about that?
Alternative:
Create a permapgameplay.txt file that is like the gameplaycycle.txt except it is a key-values pairing of map name to a specific gameplay list to play on. This would allow server runners to basically create a gameplaycycle.txt for EACH MAP. Omitting a map from the permapgameplay.txt file would cause the gameplaycycle.txt file to be used for the gameplay cycling for that map. I actually like this A LOT because it could be used to prevent LTK from being run on ge_cradle.

I think BadPlayer made something like this for the barrelsoccer map.
Whenever this map is executed the bb_script.lua was loaded automatically.

Ohhhh that map in goldeneye rouge agent was FUN! the fun house part. They had a few fake bodys with guns in their hands which would shoot at you when you pressed a button from like above in a room with a window and it would shoot at the enemy. And then there was the traps here and there. It was a fun map actually.
Another thing that was fun about goldeneye rouge agent was the bomb guns. The ones where you could shoot a mini explosive and it would stick to whatever it touched. So like you could shoot a guy while hes running away or while your trying to run away then detonate it when you want. But only for a minute cause then after that it just didn't work anymore. That gun and the same type of gun but with poison darts was fun.
But yeah if you haven't seen that fun house level try to find it on youtube or something cause it was a fun level. Although kinda small. If someone does make something like that they should make it bigger.. much bigger. With more surprises.

You could make it bigger by doing the rest of scaramangas island, too.
So the Funhouse will be only a part of the map.
Place the good weapons inside the funhouse part (high level weapon slots), so the player will have a reason to go in there instead of lingering arround on the beach.

I´m already working on the funhouse (my first level ever). my reference is the gamecube-game rogue-agent I ordered 2 months ago. and kraid is absolutely right: to make the level bigger I added the beach-part, but it´s far from done. but I promise, I´ll bring it out, maybe in late summer

well im not a moder or anything however I have seen lots of mods and stuff from other games (such as Star Wars: Jedi Knight Academy) where people who made custom maps put pics in from the movie of characters and that was their look in the game but put their user name in the pic or something. However that was a mod for a game that had been out for a long time and well the mods were completely free. However I am not sure if it would be copyright protected. It might be but well most people who actually were in the movie or who made the movies probably wouldn't notice it or even get mad over it because its a minisquel(?) pic in a map. But there might still be copyright protection. So I am unsure. However I have never made mods before or maps.
Also that should be fun if your making one like that for the fun house. However it might be nice to make the map bigger like the fun house part. Like add on a second secrert fun house part maybe. Like a secret door leads to a second fun house or something with more fun traps and stuff. Like maybe with a (kinda) gun range with moving (like cardboard) targets that you can wheve in and out of when someones chasing you but also have it on a timer so that the targets all fold down onto the floor for like 10 seconds or something and at the end have a gun turret(s) or something that you can use to shoot at the targets or your enemy if hes still following (one example). even though it wasn't in the movie it still could be fun. However I guess it could be really hard to do that possibly. I have other ideas but yeah.

there definitely will be some secret passages, weird sounds, voices from hell, laughter, cowboy- and mob-music, the golden gun, buuuuuut you know I´m learning by doing..this is my first level ever, so I don´t know how get things activated like in rogue agent..yet. I already have a problem with mirrors, ´cause as far as I know, the player can´t see himself in the mirrors because of valve-engine-shit. and that´s a problem for my precious hall of mirrors. >:(

Looks pretty awesome, and goofy :) Which is positive for the map. Nice job man, keep workin it. We have a lot of community maps in development so we should have lots of new content headed our way.

This turns out great. Can't wait to see the rest of the map.
BTW: use cl_drawhud 0 and impulse 200 (requires sv_cheats 1) if you want to get rid of the Hud and weapon/hand model for pure levelshots.

I like the concept - it has potential. Though you should fill up a bit more your map with props -- screenshots #2 (post July 03, 2010) and #1 (post July 03, 2010) seem a bit dull. I like ss #1 (post July 02, 2010) too, and the last 2, though you should go easy on the brushwork ;)

Looking good, I especially like those doors.
That wanted poster fits the western style really well, yet I'm unsure if Scaramanga would really have one of Bond there - since he's eager to kill Bond anyway. Maybe he'd rather have a wanted poster of himself hanging there, mocking the ones he invited to his island to try and kill him.

Just an idea I thought I'd write: You could have the legendary ges player names written on the walk of fame.
The GES logo would replace the camera in the middle of the stars for the devs, and a gun or something for the legendary players.

Putting in "awesome players" would lead to certain issues:
1. how to determine who's awesome enough to be in there?
2. who can tell that there are won't be players who are even more awesome within the next 5 years?
3. it would piss off a few ppl who won't be mentioned there but think they should be.
4. why should we honor someone for pwning us ;)

About being special and all, it's a little offtopic, but I happened to notice that I'm granting other players "You Should Feel Honored", which is "Get killed by a Developer or Beta Tester 50 times", yet I'm neither the one or the other. The only things I contributed were translations and my opinion on stuff here on the forums and the color of my Klobb seems normal, too. Don't get me wrong here, I have no problem being able to grant other players that achievement sooner or later (in some kind of way I even like being able to do so), I'm just thinking it's weird (as I was listed under translations in the Beta 3 credits but I'm not listed in the Beta 4 credits). ;-)
Talking about Klobbs, is it even possible for Devs/Beta testers to select their Klobb color between their special color and the normal one except logging into another Steam ID? (like "oh, today I feel like I'm using the normal one instead, maybe tomorrow I'll use the other one again")
Back on track:
A solution like Enzo suggested would be cool, indeed, yet I doubt it's possible to work that feature into a map-file.

If you have a silver/gold achievement medal you are considered a "developer" code wise, its a status identifier and I didn't feel like making it exclusive, lol.
As for choosing which klobb you want, hell no, I hate giving people choices, especially developers.

I would say that a player is legendary if is playing since alpha, no matter the skill level.
Developers are legendary of course, they created this gem :). Thanks for that ;).

I´ve connected the outside and the inside-part of the map and now I´m working hard on the details. boosting the performance. tickling the madness. unfortunately it won´t be ready in the near future. february/ march sounds better than christmas. hohoho!

I fixed some of the technical problems the last days, but there are quite a few things which confuse me.
1. I always have to write down the command "buildcubemap" in-game, so that the cubemaps will work correctly after restarting the map, right?. but I don´t know what has to be done at the end of the map-progress, so that the cubemaps can be seen forever in the future download
2. kraid told me to pack my own textures via pakrat in the final bsp. should I pack the soundscpae and the music-file in there, too?
3. some confusion about putting the ctk- and the living daylights-tokens into the map. nothing worked fine yet.

1. Just do buildcubemaps and exit the game. The data is stored inside the BSP, so if you recompile the map it will erase that data, which is why you have to rebuild on every map compile (save Entities Only Compile)
2. Yes, and don't forget to make a 'scripts/music/level_music_[mapname].txt'
3. Use ge_tokenspawn entities for all tokens. The gameplay will find them and place the appropriate tokens there (depending on settings). also place ge_tokenspawn_mi6/janus for team based gameplay in/near the respective team spawn locations.

hey guys,
I´m currently working on the second version of the funhouse. I already fixed /changed some of the scaling-mistakes, the inverted bathroom doors, the bathroom tiles / mirrors, the main cinema texture, the rope, some soundscapes, the trap with the skull and the moonraker-part. added some skirting boards in the living room and I´ll try to create a 3D-skybox of the island-part.
but I am curious to hear your opinion about the map. so, what do you think of it so far?

i just played a bit of the map and i have to say that it is one of the best maps i have ever seen in a FPS- there are so many refrences to films that its Awesome, i love the easter eggs, especially with the trap door and well i can say that its Perfect...
however i think you should remove the images of the James Bond villians (to avoid copyright issues to some make up some Posters to Films Coming Soon to a theatre near you like....Shlinder's Fist starring Nicholas Cage- see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eExfV_xKaiM for some funny refrences)

The first picture definately shows your improvement with design. I would drop the lightmap scale on the floor down to a 4, you will get nice and sharp lighting effects from the sunshine.
I would also do the same to the floor in pic 4

i think its a terrific idea depends on what you can add to the outside area?-
additionally i would love to see the entrance to the funhouse with a sign saying "You Must be this tall to enter the funhouse" and maybe have a model of OddJob or Jaws looking annoyed...idk its an idea

I don´t think a picture of a pissing contest would fit into the map. but there will be pictures of the goldeneye source characters replacing the former pictures of the villains.

I think the trap cameras are a very good replacement for a movie. and I already had this idea, the NPCs sitting down watching movies. I tested it and it felt quite nice, but also a little bit exaggerated. maybe I´ll try it again sometime.

I got a book about Bond with all the characters from every movie previouse to Craigs films, but i doubt that scans of the printed photos would look much better then low res pics from the internet.
Allthough i could try the old resize trick (scanning at a high dpi and reducing the dpi later on to remove the rasterisation).

Looking pretty awesome, though the overly boxy-ness/polygonal look in the map is slightly distracting. ;)

I like the polygonal boxy-ness look for three reasons: 1. it´s very authentic. in my view the funhouse is a normal house which is cut into big squares. it should have this bauhaus-atmosphere. each room is used as a different setting. so why should I aim for an organic feeling? its neither a zoo nor an example for modern architecture. 2. the original funhouse map in goldeneye rogue agent has that look, too, and 3. it reminds me of "clean structured" maps like facility or complex, library and basement.
especially library (classic) is one of my favourite maps because it doesn´t need complex architecture or high-end textures. its well structured, the coulours are appealing and it simply flows.

the hoverboard is gone, but the new tower is much better. and the alley is gone, too, but the V-sign is still on the toilet (the 12 monkeys-sign as well). and the roger moore wanted sign will soon be replaced by a GES-bond wanted sign.

it´s not a skybox, it´s just a big brush with stars on it ;). bear in mind that the whole map should be one huge set. it should look cheap and artificial.
and the claustrophobic area does look naff to you? no way! I love it! and you have to learn going through it without touching the walls.
im looking very forward for this...even the island part aswell :D

i understand your viewpoint, dont get me wrong its not insult, even in "clean structured" maps like the ones you mentioned there is a boxy nature to the maps as those types of maps in real life are like that, but those maps you listed don't have the polygonal nature and look and feel of your map. even highly boxy env's in real life are not 100% perfectly boxy/polygonal inside and out.
a lot of small things can be done to improve the look.
one item that popped out very easy was the use of 8 sided cylinders. such as:

so here is my review of the map while i played offline
the map itself has seems to be smaller in size (but given that this is only part 1 of the scaramanga island it seems fair), i loved what you did with the image trickery in the tunnel/funhouse entrance
the guilotine trap is a stroke of genuis so i love that
the cementary area outside of the theatre should perhaps be taken out and put on the island part...it seems to be a bit misplace...i pefered the alley instead sorry :(
while i do miss the hoverboard i do enjoy the new tower (it needs a bell on the top as an adding touch ;) so thats a nice addition.
the shooting gallery however is flawed there is only a picture of 007 and there is a timelimit..(so when i went to turn it on and go outside to shoot them it finished) it just seems like a good idea but maybe if it was something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDHcy43oGRA
also i was thinking why not use the image of the Roger Moore Bond that i sent you in the email for the wanted sign or for 1 of the targets because i know that
the new bond looks ok but i pefer the version 2 sign
i love what you did with the walk of faith (and the deathtrap) but the bottom is well bland compared to the last map with the vortex (or even the birds eye view of a city which you had on the WIP screenshots) also the area around it looks well a bit too bright compared to version 2

the area which has the golden gun/ bond model pratice looks overcrowed with the addition of the target so maybe transfer that into the entrance room or maybe in the saloon area
the cinema/bar area has a rather white dullish compared to the previous version
with the bar area atleast...i think it should be better if they had a bar stools in front of the bar (where you can put mishkin and 3 others with a seat reserved for Norm a refrence to Cheers) as much as i like seeing Mishkin sitting by himself (even the image of Jack Nickolson is gone) is rather funny. the hall of fame is rather shorter which is a shame (i mean not that there is anything wrong with that) but given how there is only 6 villians this is understandable...
well all in all i did find the map rather enjoyable i still need to play it online to really capture the essence of the map

so here is my review of the map while i played offline
the map itself has seems to be smaller in size (but given that this is only part 1 of the scaramanga island it seems fair), i loved what you did with the image trickery in the tunnel/funhouse entrance
the guilotine trap is a stroke of genuis so i love that

the cementary area outside of the theatre should perhaps be taken out and put on the island part...it seems to be a bit misplace...i pefered the alley instead sorry :(
so that´s life. I like the atmosphere of the cemetery and the possibility of falling down from the shelves.
while i do miss the hoverboard i do enjoy the new tower (it needs a bell on the top as an adding touch ;) so thats a nice addition.
the big lamp on top is my bell ;)
the shooting gallery however is flawed there is only a picture of 007 and there is a timelimit..(so when i went to turn it on and go outside to shoot them it finished) it just seems like a good idea but maybe if it was something like this
it isn´t my intention that you try to shoot the activated bonds. it´s my intention that you can hide in the backdrop of the saloon and have the choice to confuse the enemy by activating the bonds.
also i was thinking why not use the image of the Roger Moore Bond that i sent you in the email for the wanted sign or for 1 of the targets because i know that
the new bond looks ok but i pefer the version 2 sign
so that´s life again. I prefer the new bond, because he looks so colourful and nice 8)
i love what you did with the walk of faith (and the deathtrap) but the bottom is well bland compared to the last map with the vortex (or even the birds eye view of a city which you had on the WIP screenshots) also the area around it looks well a bit too bright compared to version 2
maybe it looks bland, but I think that it goes nicely with the new area above. and all of the bright new elements should be bright. I tried to adopt this surreal feeling of the last scenes from the movie 2001- a space odyssey. (or the famous bar scene from the shining.)

Uuuuh yeah you might want to take it down before anyone plays it, you'll ruin his whole map release if people download an older version from your server before he finishes it.

hi kids, good news! funhouse version 3 is almost ready for release.
BUT there are still two things which bother me. when I start the map, the console tells me
1. Attemped to precache unknown particle system "prop_glass_impact1"! and 2. Trying to precache breakable prop, but has no model name.
does anybody know what causes this shit?
