I'm really wanting to play this game, but every time I join a game, I get placed in spectator mode, then time-out. Are there ports I need to forward perhaps?

I hardly doubt it. If you can enter the game succesfully and spectate, You should be able to join a team, I don't know why this occurs though.

what kind of connection are you running on?

Might want to go hardline versus wireless.

If there are any specific disconnect messages you're getting, or any errors or messages in console. Those could be helpful.

How exactly do you access the console?

and when it happens after I'm brought back to the main menu screen I get an error box stating "Disconnect: ben.farthing timed out."

Had pretty much the same problem and had an exception in the Winshit firewall, but going into the advanced settings I found that the exception was private or something (probably meaning LAN) and so I set hl2.exe to public and problem solved.

This was with Winshit 7.

I'm trying out those settings now. I haven't yet had any success but I'll keep trying things out for a bit before I give up

i dunno, starting to feel like I'm not meant to play this

lol i know D: but I can't even fathom what else I could try. Are there different ports used once you get into the game that are different from the ones used to connect to the server for some reason?

Truth be told Windows 7:
1. is more energy efficient;
2. has a better graphics lib now;
3. has better compositing (fences);
4. is actually faster for desktop use;
5. has a better priority scheduler;
6. has a potentialy faster compiler (than gcc).

But I still hate it!

Exactly how large is the download? When I first downloaded 4.1 Chrome told me it had finnished downloading and it was 1.1GB, while the second time I downloaded it was 1.2GB according to Chrome and it worked. Try a different mirror?

BTW the netcode in this game is genious; it tolerates 300 ping, so it's probably not the connection. I also played this game over WiFi *.b with heavy interference and experienced just one timeout after an hour.

I've played on a 1 bar cellphone connection..lol 250ping and minor lag spikes...but worked, and got kills.
