Everyone at Team GoldenEye: Source is so excited to be giving you this media and mod progress update,
 and we know we had a few months off the chart for updates, since our big releases earlier in the year.
Behind closed doors we've been progressing so well, the reasons and apologies for the lack of word you wouldn't
 even remember by the end of this update. So, strap yourselves in as we reveal whats on the plate for beta 4!

On the coding side of the house we have fixed many little bugs that were in Beta 3.1.4 (released march) but didn't directly impact gameplay. We have also implemented a plethora of new features in Beta 4 that further extend the GoldenEye 64 atmosphere. One key update comes a new gameplay engine based on Python instead of our current LUA. This not only allows us to more closely integrate the gameplay scripts with the C++ architecture, but it also makes it easier for us to create custom AI for our mod that can be tuned to each gameplay! This advancement is still under works, but should be ready for Beta 4 or as a downloadable addition.

The Caverns map, by Sharpshootah, is definitely one of the multiplayer dev favourites and we delight in getting to experience this revisioned level. The map is capped off with extra areas accessible, the most instantly recognized is seen in screenshot three (caverns_2.jpg), which links the lower section with the upper via the glass panels and holds two weapon locations. The atmospheric enhancement available and utilized by sharpshootah on source, and the anticipation of a community, makes this map one to really look forward to!

Whaomg!? Yes you read right. I'm sure theres not a fan out there that hasn't wanted this nostalgic wonder for quite some time, and the code was put in place before beta 3 came out ; However it was rightly deemed we should not rush it, but rather finely tune the bugs that came up and hone the particle and overall visual aspects before allowing it to our playing public. If you are wondering, It's damage value and radius are similar to the n64 instance.

The fireball is laced with all the goodies, such as, debris and a smoke filled air for a period after the fire clears. It also visually reflects the same way as in the n64 counterpart ; when you detonate or launch an explosive near a wall for example, the other side of the wall (if another room for example) will experience the fireball . Also to note, even props that explode will be rolling explosions!

Seen above, this powerhouse weapon has just this week undergone tweaks and fixes for it's induction into full blown testing, the code is all working and the reload animation looks 5 star and release ready. Next update will cover more screens of this weapon, with further tweaking!

Speaking of animations, the team is buzzing with the addition of The SSL to the developer list, we have in conjunction with KillerMonkey, been able to revamp our idle and fire animations for the characters. These new world animations mark a big leap in our goal for a unique look, steering away from HL2 style of running/holding weapons, and more towards our vision of goldeneye64 fame.

These are a selection of our environmental props for the current batch of levels in production. One that im sure stands out is the spiral hatch from caverns, as well as the updated hi-res look of the computer console seen in many levels on the original!

Our 3D department has quite a few members dedicated as prop artists, to fill dozens of requests from our mappers all throughout the year of a map's production. Their works are tireless, with dozens of tweaks, from textures and scale as the pipeline to insertion in the level is complete ; It's nice to show off singularly, the environment they help create.

Lastly, our most recent sound designer/composer to join the team, Goldenzen, has been firing on all cylinders with his brand of GoldenEye remix. He combines the movie-esque inspiration, with the arrangements of the game tracks in a way that is a treat to the ear and lover of all forms GoldenEye. Here is a little blend of all his current WIP efforts that we may see done for release in the Beta 4 OST! Again, just more choice for the new featured in-game music player, which is configurable with each level in the mod.

We want to mention one last thing. Big thanks goes to the folks who make Wing IDE. Wingware have provided us with a free license for their Python debug technology, which mentioned above is used for our gameplay modes and other features. http://www.wingware.com/

Next update : More Grenade Launcher. The possibility of a teaser video for beta 4, which will include visuals of rolling explosions seen above! Plus more screens from artwork, namely a new character for MI6 about to go in game. Finally, continuing to show new levels slated for release, this time from Viashino Cutthroat who is a savage beast of classic's perfection. Sounds perfectly necessary to me. Remember GE's Multiplayer clearly enough? Certain songs were randomly picked from a set, depending on the map. From what I see, this would replicate such behavior, and allow all of the epic remixes of music for GES to be in at the same time. :) For example, Cradle could have both post and pre-beta3 Cradle Music. (I like the pre-beta3 music personally, but both are awesome.)

Well, the old system used the HL2 soundscapes system to play music, even though it's only supposed to be used for environmental sound effects. Essentially, since the music was controlled by soundscapes, it wouldn't loop properly and sometimes didn't work. The music player fixes this by making the music its own separate sound type playing in the engine, and it's played at a constant volume, loops, and crossfades between songs in the song list for each specific map.

Edit: Heh, it seems the latest composer did one of my ideas, and used the drums from the movie soundtrack, and incorporated it into his songs.

I`d like to make a little comment on this: I did not use the drums from the movie soundtrack. All of the sound effects, noises, ambients and syntheziser-sounds, even if they`re very close to Eric Serra's, are created entirely by myself.
It took me years of research, testing and refining those sounds to get them to sound like in GoldenEye movie. Some are similar to Eric Serra's and some are additional, things I thought would fit in this style.
Thanks for the comments and I hope you will have fun listening to this music and being dragged into this GoldenEye world like I always am when I write those songs :)

And please don`t forget: This music would be absolutely useless if we wouldn`t have the chance to play it along with a great mod (sorry if this sounds bootlicking but I mean it from the bottom of my heart, even if this sounds even more bootlicking now).

I'd rather play on Caverns than on Cradle, although Caverns is too linear for the most part - at least it got space enough for more players and you won't get camped that easy. (speaking of the classical layout)

Furthermore the screens are really nice, I like how the map looks and I'm looking forward to see those eye shaped doors in action again.

Caverns does look awesome, you can see the amount of thought that's gone into its reconception. It looks very impressive and it's one of the more challenging maps to remake from a design standpoint too.

I have a feeling that even people who hated the original caverns will love this.

PS: OK now that I have calmed down a little: From the top to the bottom one pile of pure awesomeness! This is exactly what I wanted in beta4 and what makes Goldeneye really Goldeneye. Too bad you guys stick with fully ragdoll all the way because the insane deaths of models was a good charactaristic of Goldeneye on the 64.

The insane amount of work limits this for now, but agree would be awesome to see by Final.

Can I make a suggestion? The grenade launcher looks a little too squarish... The last thing this mod needs is more polygons, so how about some texture tricks that make it look more roundish. For example look at the Quake 3 grenade launcher. Looks realy roundish with a low poly count: http://www.mobeenfikree.com/images/screenshots/thePit/screen3.jpg

PS: that way you can only see that it is round because of the edges... but if you can make the edgy part transparent in your textures than you can achieve truely round looking objects ;) But make sure that you don't include these texture hacks into model that others can see walking around...

I don't think that's the finished grenade launcher, it seems to be a placeholder (low detail/unfinished version for testing). I'm sure the finished one will have much rounder edges just like the sniper rifle does and a nice texture with normal maps.

Grenade Launcher texture is probably going to be upscaled and have normal/spec maps added. The model itself is pretty much done, the texture just makes it look ugly as hell.

I'm so eager to hear more about the music player.. I know there's a lot of alternative versions of some of the songs, will they all eventually be included? Variety is the spice of life.

Not sure if they ALL will be included in the end, but with a customizable music player you can add whatever song you want yourself too. You can also take the music from alpha, beta 1, and beta 3 and put it in there if you want a HUGE variety :) also, don't forget the beta3 soundtrack since there are unused bonus tracks :). But yeah, there are a good amount of alternate versions in 4 and you won't be disappointed with the music player thats for sure. :)

Yeah, Beta 3.x and below uses the HL2DM animations set, the standard character animations that come with the Source code for multiplayer mods. Killermonkey and I have created a new animation set for just about every GES weapon, and it looks much better when the hands actually fit the weapon. You can see some of the animations in the update, and some more have been created/polished since then.

hmm, after reading most of the regular posts here, it seems to me that the beta 4 update will be HUGE..maybe 2 or 3 new characters..maybe 3 new levels, ( some classics exclusive) moonraker laser, granade launcher, rocket launcher..bullet penetration, rolling explosions, python code, new game modes like capture the key...over 70 achievements..wow guys, do you sleep at all ?  :D

Well Facility Backzone and Caverns are confirmed for Beta 4

Silo, Surface, Citadel, Aztec, and Archives Frontzone may or may not be in Beta 4... we'll have to wait and see.

To be more descriptive since sharp is so boring :P, We are polishing, testing, and fixing bugs ALL at the same time. :) Some days are better than others. For instance, when sharp commits a map and it has all the glass falling over on the models and the floor missing/damaged, we regress a little bit and we have to take more time for his butt to get things straight. :P But overall, new things are added all the time which always makes questions difficult about release. A lot of the stuff we are "polishing", "bug fixing" and "testing" will be seen in the next update, but life happens and things get pushed back as you all know. :) You'll just have to wait and see....

OK so you are not saying: "OK hold up. Feature freeze! Fix all the bugs. Modify everything so that it's playable and release it once it's totally playable.". Instead you are working on the mod untill you think: "OK we've put enough new shit into it that's finnished and once we reach a state in wich it's totally playable and not regressed like hell we compile it and put it online as a download." ?
