Title: Crashes upon startup
Post by: Maxaxle on August 13, 2010, 07:31:56 pm
Just after skipping past (or watching) the intro videos, I got this:

And I was moving the window around a little, to explain the extra frames.

Have you attempted to search the forums at all?

No, not yet. Yes, I'm lazy.

Thanks!

Derp. I knew I needed to install SDK 2007, but apparently I forgot. :-X

Heya guys, I'm not sure if it's also that SDK thingy I need - I installed beta 4 and when I try to launch it, only steam opens but nothing happens...
However, I cannot find this SDK stuff ANYWHERE...not even in the Tools section of Steam...would you happen to know where I could get it? Thanks!

"Within the Steam client go to the Tools tab and install Source SDK: Orange Box." <-- that part?

How I said - it's not there in the Tools section of Steam...
Any other place I might find it?

hmmm, alright, now I found the source sdk base 2007.gcf as some Rapidshare download (so I can't say for sure if it's even the real deal) and put it into steamapps folder...is that right?
well, now launching the game via the shortcut (there's no exe file in the gesource folder; is that normal? O_o ) I get an error saying "Steam.exe (main exception): Win32 StructuredException at 0040EDB7 : Attempt to write to virtual address 4293517097 without appropriate access rights."
If I put the -novid in, there's no error message, but the game doesn't start either...
this is how it's supposed to look, right? "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 218 -game "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\sourcemods\gesource" -novid

Whoa hold on, Do you even own a Source game? If you do, You don't need to go download the gcf file on Rapidshare, Its in your Library -> Tools on Steam.
If you don't, You must buy a Source game that includes Source SDK 2007 to play.
(The bundled HL2:DM ATI promotion and Portal : First slice does NOT count.)

Woops...I thought I had Portal (the normal Portal DOES count?) installed, but since I reinstalled Windows recently, I hadn't installed it again -_-
I'll do that now and hope Portal is enough. I do have Half-Life 2, too, but in my old home, far away atm *g*

Yeah the normal Portal has Source SDK.
Even if its not installed, You are supposed to have Source SDK base in your tools list.

Hmpf, no, even with Portal installed it's not in the Tools section...
And still the game won't start. No error message, though *shrug*

Is it even normal that in the gesource folder there is no exe file?

Yes its normal, Because it starts from the Source SDK base 2007 exe.

Read it STEP-BY-EXCRUTIATING-STEP. It even has pictures in case you get lost...

If you purchased, as in WITH CREDIT CARD, a source based game before (HL2, Portal, etc.) you will have the sdk available for download. You must be using the SAME steam account you used to make that purchase. It (the source game) does not have to be downloaded or installed to have access to the SDK.

If not, purchase one again. There is no way around that.

? I don't mean to sound rough but either I totally don't get something or you didn't even read what I said.
I said I already have installed Portal (yes, full version, and same account with which I got it once) and still the SDK is not there for download (though I don't get what you mean with saying first "you will have the sdk available for download" and then "It does not have to be downloaded or installed.")

Oh, I found the problem...
It seems the free Portal version didn't have the SDK included...damn. Alright, then I guess I gotta get my copy of Half-Life 2 over here.

Can't be very hard to find...
I know I can't draw arrows for shit. :P

EDIT : Portal was free once? Didn't know that, But that's definitely why.

If the SDK is linked to your account and you can't see it you could go with the way how you still can obtain Codename Gordon:

copy this in your browser:
steam://install/218
for the orange box sdk

respectively
steam://install/92
for Codename Gordon

(the steam part is some protocoll that comes with steam and is interpreted by your client)

yeah, that's what everyone was talking about
