Title: SSL's Blog #2: ge_library
Post by: Jonathon [SSL] on March 31, 2011, 02:36:08 am
So I've been taking quite a long break from mapping recently, mostly due to the fact that I ran out of steam for design ideas for Library (The Basement/Stack combo) and quite honestly I'm not really satisfied on how Basement turned out and where Stack's headed.

So I'm asking the entire community: what is your opinion on the currently released ge_basement? What do you like, what do you not like? What would you like to see added, removed, changed, or how could I add more beneficial detail to the map?

MSPainted screenshots pointing to things to be changed would be greatly appreciated.

Basement is in the current build (and it hasn't been touched since then) and here's some previously unreleased screenshots of Stack:

Images Temporarily Removed

Any and all opinions on either map are greatly appreciated, and all ideas will get the map closer to completion and release!

I quite like Basement. Definitely the most underrated GES map. Sometimes it feels like I'm playing Half-Life 2, though. Maybe make the lighting a little brighter and more colorful?

Stack looks awesome! I like the direction you're heading with it. It looks nice and fresh. Keep it up.

I really like basement, But not enough players are playing it. In my opinion, Its fine to me the way it currently is.
And dang! Stack looks great.
I no-clipped through basement to look at an unfinished version of stack, The main rooms looked finished to me, Just needed lights, But this update just kills it.
I especially love the first screenshot.

-Well i think that ge_basement is rather cool, dark and gloomy very underrated- i only played the map once- alot of vents lead to camping though...would love to see a couple of more easter eggs (but i always say that about all the maps :) but its a really good map maybe better lighting?

for your Stack images - i would love to see the nericnomicon from Evil Dead among the books
http://coolmasks.co.uk/images/ta426.jpg (for Refrence)

but from what i see i think your Stack looks great- beautiful scenery, also reminds me about the libary from Batman Arkham Aslyum (only without Joker Posters)

Good Work :D

I agree that basement is pretty good as-is.

I think you are on the right track with stack, altough I think it's still a bit industrial for a library. A lot of those cool old libraries have a bunch of ornate woodwork, wrought iron railings, chandeliers, and such. Stuff like those busts in the first pic.

And a shitload of books. Rows of floating bookshelves in the middle of the rooms would probably screw up the gameplay, but I would try and completely line the walls with them, up to the ceilings. Maybe ditch those standard bookshelves that there now.

I agree really needs to be wooden shelves lining the walls and full to brim with books.

The positive feedback makes me feel a lot like working on this map again, I'll probably make a set of custom textures/props for Basement for the next release at the very least.

Does anyone have any good reference images of things they'd like to see added to the map?

It would be nice if Basement had the Stack feel to it, Instead of feeling dark and gloomy.

Isn't that supposed to be the feel of a basement... especially one under a library...

The reason I say that is because the library looks well kept, for the most part, and not abandon.  Considering the main room has several light fixtures that are turned on.  Would you expect graffiti, gas leaks, and water damage in the basement of a well-kept library?

I'm glad to hear you think that! I haven't worked on anything GES related in a long time... I really need to take a week and push out the last bits of that map.

The problem with how I work is I'm a very detail oriented person, so I spend weeks, months, or years poking and prodding at small things until I get sick of working on them and abandon them. Which means it takes forever for me to finish something without a deadline. Literally forever.

I know exactly what you mean. the funhouse took me almost 3 years until I felt satisfied. and in the end the fun of the work turned into madness.

but you shouldn't just give up on that map, you're almost THERE. and I want that map. everybody wants that map. the mod needs your map right now. and if you can't work without a deadline, I´ll give you one:

OK SSL, let's make this clear: this goddamn map is almost finished and it already looks beautiful. Now, take your chance and finish the basic structures like walls/ceilings, so that it's sealed! JAB JAB! Then add some more detail to plain zones and it will be fine. Do you understand? IT WILL BE FINE. FINE!!! And I want to see results next month, on December, the 20th. THIS IS YOUR DEADLINE. MAY THE FORUM BE MY WITNESS. Do it now or never! Before Christmas day, I want to test the final version and murder someone in your library! You wouldn't let me down, would ya?
and once it's finished I congratulate you to one hell of a map, ok?

The round room in Library, it looks sexy as fuck. The basement looks fine to me, the only thing I don't like about it is the loading room where the top teir weapon usually spawns. To me it doesn't really fit into basement.

Also, playing on the New library has already happened ;)

Half the rooms are just boxes, and there is still a lot of prop placement and lighting tweaking to be done.

Yes, the map is not out yet. There's still a lot of TINY things to fix - but it's 90% done and I'm so excited and thankful that you guys will be playing it when v4.3 gets released. My imagination has been like a freight train with out brakes lately and I've gotten more of this map completed in the last week than I have in the past two years. I made a video for you guys to get an idea of what you're going to get to play soon. Enjoy!

THAT'S a library! damn, it looks sexy as fuck!  I really appreciate your hard work. You hit the home stretch, so steer the course and finish this monster soon. I think it's not a wrong thing to claim that all of us are veeeery excited to play the map.

Ah, by the way: wouldn't it be nice to see this awesome video on the front page as a little christmas gift for the players?

Or another media update which features the official SSL's library video trailer as well as some community stuff like Sam Colt's maps twine_mi6_sc and ge_garrison, Peroxwhy?gen's ge_depot, my Scaramanga's funhouse map and ge_desert_temple, ge_pipes, ge_void and ge_lunar_cradle by ES.
I think these maps are solid enough to keep the players busy during the holidays.
You could also mention your classic-mode-plans and the new features to come with 4.3.

So, let's stop complaining and get back to work. 4.3 will be the sum of the time and blood we invest. and everybody can help to make the next release something very special.
Brand new maps are on their way. And I'm also interested in the idea of a classic mode which features human pain sounds. If anyone wants to search for some good high quality sounds, feel free to do so and present them.
And I don't know what you feel about it, but the sound of the weapons still needs more power, especially the KF7 one. Maybe someone would like to create something better?
There are so many things which could be improved.
It just depends on time, passion and a good presentation.

All the talk about remaking existing sounds, and I think about how I use Graslu's N64 sound pack for my personal use. :P
I'm looking forward to more maps, acording to the progress tracker theres still more than half of the work to do for 4.3, though it's been the exact same for a month or two so it possible that the tracker just hasn't been updated yet, but I honestly wasn't expecting 4.3 to be here by Christmas which was kinda a bit far fetched to be honest since we can't dedicated full weeks on this mod. :-\

I like this!!

Hey guys, I have been working on my other projects since 4.2.4 was released (and of course my full time job). I intend to post all of GES source code on GitHub at some point this month. To do that, I first need to merge it with SDK 2013. Once complete then anyone with a GitHub account and C++ experience can help making 4.3 through pull requests!

I think this thread needs another encouragement again, because in my opinon SSL created one of the most beautiful maps so far and I really want to see this baby come to live again. let's take another look at the trailer he made some time ago to get in the right mood again:

and let's hear what the unicorn has to say about it:

Fun fact: I started this map when I was 13, I'm 21 now. Still remember putting down the first brush for the basement section on a hand-me-down Celeron computer with a CRT screen.

IMO, this map hasn't aged well, especially when you compare it to the newer stuff in the mod *cough cough Luchador*. I never got good at making static props, so I ended up abusing Source's brush system a lot and using props/textures from other maps as well as trying to have an extreme attention to detail with the lighting and brushwork to compensate.

To be release ready, it either needs some kind of art pass, or a unanimous vote among the dev team of "fuck it, it's fine" since I don't want to have the lowest quality map in the mod. Right now it could pass as a really pretty third party map or a leftover beta 3 map.

I don't agree, I think your selling yourself short on the quality aspect. This map looks great in my opinion, better than some of the maps that install with GE:Source... You could always release a Beta for testing and feedback, and maybe even get some people on board. Either way I think this map is most certainly worth the go ahead :)

I forgot about this map. Looks promising. Will it ever get released?
