Shooting Gallery
« on: December 13, 2010, 02:50:53 pm »

Ive been using a method lately for practising my aim, what I do is I go on Bunker_Classic and run around shooting out the lights and screens etc as fast as I can and the mad thing is it's working. My aim is getting better and more focused. So my idea is having a shooting gallery similar to the one on Perfect Dark with a point system enabling you to try to improve your shooting skills, you would also be trying to compete against other Goldeneye Source players as well for the top of the board. There could be a Shooting Gallery page on GE:S Stats page, or it could just be incorporated within the shooting gallery menus. This would be especially useful for those less experienced players who find going up against the experienced players a daunting task. I noticed on the forums a while ago someone mentioning bots as a way of improving, but I think this would easier to implement (Although I have no clue when it comes to programming) than creating AI based opponents and would also be a game in itself. What do you reckon?

You know this actually doesn't sound like a bad idea.
I see new players often and I see them say "wtf i shot 4019 bullets at you, you shoot 4 and i die?" Then they rage quit 10 minutes later.
Adding to this idea, If it ever gets real, The targets should be moving slow and fast (Different targets) and should have an amount of health similar to the players.
Some of them should be big and others should be small.
This could make the player understand the game mechanics a bit more if he never played the original multiplayer.

But, That's up to the team.

I think its a good idea too but.......if it wasn't in the original n64 version then I highly doubt they'll add a shooting gallery.  Thats my guess.

This is very different circumstances though, the original wasn't on-line and you were up against mates who never really had much more of an advantage than you, whereas newbies are going up against people that have been playing this for years, this is more to do with making the game more newb friendly and keeping players rather than scaring them away. I think we should all pull together and start coming up with some ideas to draw more people to this mod, I'd love to see this mod thriving with servers and players. Anyway, the original also never had a Casino level, achievements or the ability to jump (Which I find annoying when im trying to shoot someone and they are hopping around like Skippy the kangaroo).

Something similar had been suggested in the past and think I had said it wasn't a very good idea. Now though, on reflection, I think the concept of some kind of shooting gallery or training course has a lot of potential, perhaps as more of a precursor to multiplayer rather than an addon to singleplayer.

Am I right in thinking this would be a lot easier than bots?

Cheers for bringing this up. Well thought out and I'm so happy to hear an example of someone looking to get their aim up in our mod instead of tell us we should change it to make aiming easier, you know? This is just a relief and a half to get the other side of the coin.

Additionally, yes we have floated a "training" map idea for well about 18 months, however we want to make it so new players can access it easily so we need to figure a way to implement it into the menu. Which takes time and not a priority yet. Hope this answers things.

You know the best way to improve is to just play.  You can practice hitting targets moving big or small all you want but it will never prepare you for the erratic movements of human players.

However, I do think a shooting range tournament would be fun.  One idea I just thought of might be cool and thats to go to Runway and launch balloons or something and use the rocket launcher or grenade launcher or whatever to see how many you can knock down in 60 seconds.  The possibilities are endless.

No doubt playing can improve your skills but the point is newcomers don't survive long enough to even attempt a kill most of the time, before they even get chance to aim their weapon they get head shot and most of the time they just don't have the patience to stick it out. A tutorial option in the menu's explaining the mechanics with text and images and some kind of shooting practice with a scoring system so they can keep going up against their best score would give them some incentive to stick around and keep practising, you know... like a light at the end of the tunnel.

The bar in ge_casino has a lot of glass bottles. Standing on the poker table forms a good place to learn to free aim, or just to muck around :)
