Serious Latency Issues :(
« on: January 29, 2011, 12:04:24 am »

Hi again, not sure if this is the right thread or not. If not I apologize.

Lately (as in the past month), I've been having some serious issues with my ping whilst playing GES. It gets abnormally high about 99% of the time, sometimes latency hitting about 700ms. Other times it looks ok from the server menu but in about a minute after I join it just shoots up again.  ???

For example, I joined a local server (based somewhere in Europe) where my latency was 49ms and within minutes it shot up to 340ms seemingly out of nowhere  ???. This happens of course to other servers on a much larger scale as my ping is higher on US servers anyway.

I must admit I haven't the greatest internet setup as regards to speed (1mb broadband is unfortunately my limit), however this never affected my ping in the past or indeed in other online games so I don't see how it should now. Furthermore I don't download whilst playing the game and I don't have any other programs running in the background (apart from Anvira Antivirus) that could be eating away at system memory.

So, I'm swamped! I really don't know what to do other than contact my service provider and ask them, but I want to rule out all other possibilities with GES first before I do so. Anyone have any suggestions? I really need help with this as I literally can't play GES properly anymore without an acceptable ping  :(

Well it wouldn't be GE:S.

Do you have a wireless connection or a router?

Its not a wireless connection anyway. I do however have a switch connected to my main PC which is also connected to a HomePlug which essentially enables me to connect to the internet from anywhere in the house via another socket and HomePlug. I set this up myself about 2 years ago though and its never given me trouble apart from now.

As for my ISP, I'm not sure what kind of configuration they use. All I know is I'm getting a broadband signal from my neighbours via an outside reciever, from there a cable runs right back inside into my PC and.....yeah thats it really.

My brother has been back home from college now for the past few weeks and we've been sharing the bandwidth (i.e he's on a HomePlug and I'm on the main PC). While it does affect speeds, I'm fairly sure its got nothing to do with the excessive ping as we've had the same scenario over Christmas and GES worked fine then.

So........yeah, sorry bout the long reply, lol

You should make sure there is noone downloading stuff from the web, especially the self updating crap steam does once in a while for it's games.
I think it's possible to disable the auto update though.
Also check if there's someone stealing you bandwidth if your WLAN is enabled and doesn't use encryption or only WEP.

Yeah, Steam gets a lot of updates from HL2 DM and TF2 from time to time but I tend not to play GES whilst these updates are downloading. Also my brother doesn't really download much stuff at all tbh, just light web browsing (Facebook and stuff). Tonight, I'll try keeping him off the network whilst I play GES but I think I tried that before and I remember it not working plus you also have one pissed off brother shouting in your ear all the time (not good) lol, xD

Wtf does this mean? The only way to diagnose whether its homeplug or whatever is to directly connect your computer to the output of your modem and not connect ANYTHING else to it. PERIOD.

This is not GES it is 100% you and your connection. Sorry, but you have to figure it out yourself and if that means beating up your brother or unplugging that homeplug thing then so be it.

                                                *****UPDATE*****
So, I got in touch with my ISP yesterday and apparently there's a problem on the network as other people locally have had similar complaints. Unfortunately he has no idea how to alleviate the problem but he said he'll stay in touch if there's any updates. So...........yeah thanks anyway guys for all your suggestions. Seems I'll be taking a break from GES for the foreseeable future :/
