Title: DuClare Chateau Remake (from Deus Ex)
Post by: Adrian on March 29, 2014, 09:12:23 pm
Greetings! I've been lurking around here long enough, so I think it's time to share some of my work. For the past week, I've been re-creating one of my favorite levels from Deus Ex, the DuClare Chateau. Not only did it have awesome music, but I loved the mysterious air to the place. It was so majestic and cool; I wanted to capture that feel and bring it to GE:S. Of course, the single player layout had a fair share of dead-ends and wasn't fit for multiplayer. I took some creative freedoms and tweaked it.

=== Phase 1, drawing the layouts ===

I soon realized parts of the chateau are cramped, so I decided to re-work the original underground areas and build vertically, adding more playable space to the map. If you remember, the entire underground section was a massive dead-end. That won't fly in mutliplayer.

(Graph paper makes life so much easier)
=== Phase 2, building it from the ground up [Alpha stage] ===

I wanted to make the entire map from scratch, so I chose not to export anything. Plus, exporting from other games/engines could get messy if you're like me and don't know what you're doing. With that in mind, I kept Deus Ex open in one window while working in Hammer, constantly tweaking the scale. And let me tell you, the scale in Deus Ex is massive. Over six days, I had the entire layout with basic lighting and basic optimization, and this is where we are now.

Images are much darker in a browser than the actual game, even though I turned my brightness up in-game :(

I think it's safe to say I'm just about out of alpha, considering all the basics are done. I spent the majority of this week tuning the flow and layout, making sure it not only made sense but was easy to navigate.

I appreciate you taking the time to read through this, enjoy! I'll definitely keep this updated as I make progress. I'm aiming to have the entire project finished by the end of April, though that seems ambitious. Only time will tell ;)

Wow. I am extremely impressed, and I am even more impressed that you used the dev textures properly to ensure height and proportions were kept accurate.

Well done!

Cannot wait to see how this evolves. Cheateu was a very cool level in Deus Ex (not my fav though).

This. This map would probably have a lot of awesome potential to have a similar ambiance to Bunker ;)

This is something I'm definitely looking forward to. It looks great, gives me a feeling of bunker/archives mix, and overall the design of it looks stunning. Great work indeed Adrian!

Im so giddy that so many maps are being done right now, this one looks pretty good layout wise. Never played Deus Ex though so i have no idea what to expect look wise

I like the solid start. The foundation of a map is very important. Your slow solid base is looking very good.

Very interested in this!

I appreciate all the feedback; it means a lot and gives me more reason to see this through to the end :) A few nights ago, I held the first playtest for the map, where I received some excellent advice.

=== With that said, on to the pictures! ===

A few rooms inside the house were cramped and most of the doorways were just very narrow choke points.

New and improved bathroom!

Since there was only one way into Nicolette's room, and two windows overlooking the front, it was easy to sit in there and camp. I fixed this by adding a new passage to her room from the bathroom through her closet.

Nicolette's room, with new closet entrance on right
(http://i.imgur.com/xQl2XlY.jpg)

The underground was essentially a maze of hallways and rooms with no height variation, so I rectified the situation by opening up the main cellar.

I also played around with the entrances to the super computer room, and left only one excavation tunnel and added a new security/checkpoint kind of hallway.

Super computer room, still heavy WIP (Excavation to wine cellar on right, security hallway on left)
I just realized now, that if I wanted to add light in front of the monitors, I only chose the green ones. The white screens seem bright enough to emit enough light, but I completely overlooked this!

This is all I have for now. My next focus is on adding some cover/more details outside, such as hedges, statues, gardens and fountains. I hope this is enough to wet your appetites until next time!

I'll be taking a break from this over the weekend, since I'm going to Savannah to visit my school. In the mean time, I thought I'd share something, rather than nothing. My next main focus is what will be outside, and I have plenty of ideas flowing. So far I've drawn this horribly out-of-scale diagram to try and represent the basics.

Outside outline
(http://i.imgur.com/m0orBKb.jpg)
This is what happens when you try and work on anything past 3:00 am, and you're half awake after taking some melatonin.

The idea is to have the hedges outline the terrace on which the chateau sits. I plan on opening the hedges up at strategic spots, but I really wouldn't know where to start with them just on paper. I'm also planning on adding some cute little gardens outside for the armor, or something to that effect. That's all for now!

You guys are too kind <3

I have another update! I added arches to the hedges, in an attempt to open them up and give the player a back route when things get heated and they need to get out. I'm hoping to add some gardens behind the hedges, in each corner outside (you'll see in the overview). These gardens will be equipped with armor and weapons.

That's all for now! I should have another release before the weekend. After that, the map will be out of alpha and going into beta. I can finally start adding textures, working on the lighting, adding a better skybox, adding soundscapes, I have plans for a 3D skybox to set the chateau in the French countryside, etc. It's almost there ;)

I've never seen this map in Dues Ex (because I've never played it) but is there a hedge maze by any chance?
Title: Re: DuClare Chateau Remake (from Deus Ex)
Post by: Adrian on April 10, 2014, 06:59:56 am
There was a maze in the backyard, but not a hedge maze. It was made out of concrete walls, I'm not sure exactly what you would call it. I would keep it for the sake of authenticity, but there's really no need to keep it in a deathmatch-based map

I finally added the gardens! Or.. at least placeholders. This should be it for the entire layout and placeholders -- in other words, the map is just about out of alpha! I'll have this released and ready for playtesting over the weekend. In the mean time, I thought I would share the progress I made tonight :) What's also worth noting is I added a grass texture to the actual ground, in an attempt to distinguish what's the terrace/cobblestone/gardens and what will be grass.

Can you compile without lighting so that we can see the shots a little better? It is getting harder and harder to spot the goods in the screenshots

=== Alpha 9 release below! ===

I'm aware the shots were getting darker every day :/ I didn't want to take screenshots in fullbright because they would look like complete vomit, so I just adjusted the brightness of each picture so we can actually see them :)

The exposure may seem a bit much, but rest assured it's not that bright in-game. It retains the feel of moonlight, rather than a blinding sunrise.

I also reworked the entire weapon placement and armor situation. I tried to make them as accessible as possible, with the higher powered weapons/armor off the beaten path or in very exposed areas to make it worth the risk. I made sure there's one armor and one high powered weapon with ammo in the four main areas of the map:

1. First floor

2. Second floor

3. Cellar

4. Outside

In the cellar, I moved the armor from the inconvenient side cubicle and threw it in the center
(http://i.imgur.com/n9bE7dc.jpg)

With all of that said, here's the download :)
https://www.mediafire.com/?ymhu82gl389qyen (https://www.mediafire.com/?ymhu82gl389qyen)

There's just one major step I need to take before moving on: adding the 3D skybox. I don't know about you, but I feel a bit lonely with a whole lot of nothing around the chateau. Once I finish that, the map will officially be out of alpha! I'm releasing now, though, because the 3D skybox is purely aesthetic and won't have an impact on gameplay.

As always, enjoy! Feel free to leave feedback or add me on Steam if you have any questions.

*Edit*: I accidentally released the map with only a fast compile and forgot to build the cubemaps. I deserve a slap for each offense. No worries, though. The download is updated

Ahh much better thanks!

IMO armor should be a gamble to grab. Middle of the room is a gamble but only for high traffic areas. A dead-end room is even bigger since I can lob a nade or rocket at you in that circumstance and ruin your armor immediately. Just my opinion though :-)

I agree, man :) There are many approaches to armor placement, and I'm still tinkering around with it.

=== Alpha 10 release below! ===

Before, Beth's bedroom on the north side of the house was almost completely useless. It was simply a square room with two side hallways, one of which was hardly ever used. I rectified this by opening the room up and adding a bathroom for the armor. I chose to put the armor here so I wouldn't have both armor vests on the same side of the house.
Beth's bedroom, from second floor balcony
(http://i.imgur.com/G0CGHXz.jpg)

Inside Beth's bedroom, bathroom on right
(http://i.imgur.com/kpH7g8C.jpg)

With the armor being in the bathroom, it could be easy to camp. However, if we add a ladder from the outside to get in, your back is always vulnerable to an opening, no matter where you're facing. If you choose to defend the bedroom and camp the armor, but leave the bathroom for a second, it's possible for someone to sneak in from the outside, steal the armor, and hop out ;)

Scaffolding and ladder from the outside (let's pretend it's there because they're installing a bathroom window)

I also tweaked the weapon and armor placement situation, again. As I've mentioned before, this is my first serious attempt at a multiplayer map, so there's been a learning curve from the start. I've been learning a lot along the way :)

Supercomputer room, now holding an armor vest
(http://i.imgur.com/cwKRzjw.jpg)

I've said this at least a dozen times now, but this should be one of, if not the last of the alpha releases!
https://www.mediafire.com/?260m7te23n049kx (https://www.mediafire.com/?260m7te23n049kx)

I'm hoping to have a productive play test tonight and make all final changes to the layout and placements :)
Enjoy!

I'm bumping because I updated the download above. No pictures this time, but I fixed a few minor detail issues, such as supports in the house floating above the ground; I forgot to pull them down when I recessed the floor. More importantly, I fixed the armor placement in the cellar. I quickly realized how easy it was to camp the armor in the supercomputer room -- if you stand where it spawns, you could see the farthest walls of the connecting rooms. I know I keep flip-flopping, but I just want to make sure it's the best it can be :)

If you're interested, feel free to download! Just replace the old file with the new. Additionally, I did a final compile, rather than a fast. I keep overlooking this step because I forget this is going to see the light of day, unlike 98% of my other maps.

Wow Adrian...just...wow. I never EVER though you even had the skill or ability to map as you have shown. Just the basic geometry is fantastic. Being a Deus Ex lover fanboy, I can you are doing a fantastic job on this. I can't say it is my favorite level (like KM said) but I can say you are making it more and more my second favorite with every update. :) Seriously, if you need ANY help with this map, please contact me. I will lend any abilities I can to make sure this gets to final release.

Keep it up man

for those who have never seen the map, here is a really bad play through a guy did on you tube. Kind of gives you a feel of it.

It's been just under two weeks since the last update, but this is still alive and well :) A week ago, I sketched what I hoped would develop into a skybox.

For the most part, it came out alright. Be aware, however, that I'm still experimenting with different techniques to hide where the skybox geometry ends, so it's still early WIP. I've also spent some time doing a few detail sweeps and adding placeholders/props to give it a little more life. I'll let the pictures do the talking :)

That's all for now! I'm not going to make any promises when I'll be out of alpha or when the whole thing will be finished, because I'll end up breaking it no matter what. It's a lot easier to take a "it's done when it's done" approach :) Playtesting has been a >HUGE< part of the development, and I'll give credit to all my playtesters when this is done ;)

Well, it's been exactly two months since my last post. Rest assured, this project is alive and well :) I apologize for the lack of posting here, but I've been working on texturing the whole map when I'm not at my job. I'd like to say a trillion words of thanks to mangley for teaching my Photoshop and helping me develop those skills :D

With all that aside, I'll let the pictures do the talking. Bear in mind, the lighting is my next focus; it's very unbalanced in some areas as of now, since I'm just using a boat load of dull blue-ish lights so the map isn't fullbright.

Last, but certainly not least, our facade

It's been a busy two months ;) We are in the home stretch, now. As I mentioned, I just have to establish my lighting, furnish the map and add models (anything still dev-textured is a placeholder for models from E-S), and create soundscapes. I won't give a release date, because I know I won't meet it. This is roughly 85% done, and the last 15% should be quick. I just want this to be the absolute best I can make it before shipping, and with everyone's help that vision I had in March is becoming a reality.

I'm speechless. I sure missed a lot while I was away. This is amazing.

^ indeed. The chateau looks great, Adrian!

(though, imo the texture choice for the concrete in the hedge maze could be better... looks too clean)

Looks 1000x times better than when I last saw it man. Congratulations! Also, the mountains look great and even better than last time. Great job fixing them up! Can't wait for this map.

There is a problem with your toggle switches for secret ladder well.  The switches are not in sync with each other.  This makes is very confusing to determine which action does what.

Ex. If you start out on the ground floor, toggle the skull to the right, it opens the passage, you climb up the ladder, and the books are not out.  If you pull the books out, the passage closes.  If you start out on the second floor, pull the books out, it opens the passage, you climb down the ladder, and the skull is not to the right.  If you toggle the skull, it goes to the right and closes the passage.

After a very productive week, I have more progress to share! Thanks everyone for the feedback, and many thanks to Troy for hosting a very successful event on his server, last Saturday, for the map. It was the first public playtest, and I received some excellent advice. Ever since, I've been further optimizing and detailing the map, getting it closer and closer to a finished product. As always, I will let the pictures do the talking ;)

Apologies for such a long post, but there was plenty to show for this update. As of now, the to-do list is as follows:
 - create soundscapes
 - create credits texture
 - do a final detail sweep with props from E-S (mostly in wine cellar and skybox)
 - create a custom loading screen

If I had to ballpark the completion of the map, I would say it's somewhere around 95%.

I'm truly amazed by your guys' feedback and always appreciate it. I'm lucky to have such support for this project, and it's been a pleasure to work on it! I will keep you guys posted for the next playtest we have. After that, I will iron out any last-minute issues before release. I can safely say this will be released before August ;)

Well, I can safely say the map is officially done. I'm not quite ready to release, but I'm looking at the end of the week for that ;)

To wet everyone's appetites, and to hold you guys over until then, I made this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV9vm69Zkqc (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV9vm69Zkqc)

As a disclaimer, I need to say I am not video-editing savvy, nor am I experienced with doing this kind of thing. I tried using Source's demo smoother to get a better looking flyby, but I was running into multiple errors, including the demo removing random windows and doors at will. I think the noclip flyby worked well enough for now.

Enjoy!

Great work Adrian! This really is one of the highest quality community maps we've ever had, and certainly the best in recent memory.

Wow, the map looks awesome! :] I hope I'll be in the right place in the right time to be able to try it as soon as it is released! :D

If you're still decorating the map, the long corridors with hardwood flooring could benefit from some kind long carpets instead of small(ish) patches (I like carpets :)). Just a thought. It's been years since I completed Deus Ex, so can't remember how the map is supposed to look like, though.

One thing i would change: the hedges.
They're to brush like with hard edge.

Example: hedge.vmf (https://www.mediafire.com/?zmnr4nir1nl34nb)

Made with displacements, subdivide and noise.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone :)

@ Kraid: I agree 110%, that the hedges would look much better as displacements. I really appreciate you sharing that, but unfortunately I basically hit the displacement limit with my sloppy approach to the mountains in the skybox (I have 2042/2048). I know exactly what I need to do to optimize their setup and how to cut it down from 2,000 displacements to a much more reasonable number, but that's an undertaking I'm not ready to make just yet. I especially don't want to change it because I spent two weeks changing and tweaking the skybox until I was satisfied. I will definitely keep this in mind, though, for the next release of the map. Thank you!

We had a very successful release party. Thank you everyone who joined!

After four months, I finally did it! I couldn't tell you how many hours it took, but every minute I spent working on this was well worth it. I have never, in my life, had such positive reception to my work. I really appreciate you guys supporting me all the way to the end!
