Make sure sv_lan is set to '0'.
If it still does not appear in the list of servers, Try using the command heartbeat then change the map the server is currently running.

If it still doesn't work, Wait for someone else to reply.

Yeah it is set to 0. I have figured it out. But now I need to forward certain ports to get people to join. My question is: do you know which ports?

27015 only i believe. Open 27010 - 27016 to be safe. That should include all source based game servers.

Thank you for that. I now have a new problem or rather three new problems.

Problem 1-I have forwarded all of the ports you said on my firewall and on my router but when ever anybody connects to it on the internet tab it takes ages and gets to two bars and says
"Disconnected"
Connection failed after 4 retries.
I can access, therefore, my server under the LAN and Favourites TAB but not under the internet tab.

Problem 2-My server does appear in the Internet TAB but for some reason it's always WNx and some others which are there and I have to tick of "show map list," press "refresh all" and then I get a long list and that's where mine is.

Problem 3-I would like some help in using RCON code as when ever I enter ~ and then type, for example, rcon_password "*********" changelevel ge_casino it does nothing except show what I've typed.

I would really appreciate help on this. Thanks!

(1) Need more info. Please post what you get from "status" in the server console.

Should be:
hostname: completely irrelevant
version: fairly irrelevant in this case
udp/ip: very important
map: if a map name is not listed here, the server is not actually running a game
players: probably 0 in this case

status will tell you what IP the server thinks it has, as well as what port it has locked for listening (default 27015). If you don't like what's showing up here, you can try changing it by adding "-ip whatever" and/or "-port whatever" to your command line. Specifying a port may be useful, since HL2 itself will sometimes lock 27015 because you ran a listen server at some point. If a game is not running, you need to add "map whatever" to your startup configs or "+map whatever" to your command line.

Make sure that you forwarded UDP. Some routers may give you the option to forward TCP and UDP separately.

(2) Yes

(3) rcon changelevel ge_casino

Thank you so much you answered pretty much everything except I still don't know why my server doesn't appear unless I do as I said.

Because that's the way the server list works. If it's on map mode, it only shows servers with players.
