With that out of the way, Hello Again! Time for another update. This time focusing on our Heads-Up-Display. Most if not all of the HUD and GUI elements have drastically changed and improved since our early days. Here today we are going to show you what the lovely programmers and the graphics departments have been up to as of late!

Team Menu
This is the first screen you come to when you've entered a GE:S server. All laid out are the conditions of the game. In the first example there is no team play in place and the game-mode as you can see is Man With the Golden Gun.

(http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_teammenu_noteams.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_teammenu_noteams.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_teammenu_yesteams.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_teammenu_yesteams.jpg)

In this second example shown above the Team Menu does have team play enabled and as you see it is showing you in a simple manner which to choose from. The buttons on the left are your two pushable options. If you want to get straight in the action choose JOIN, if you want to wait for a round to end or just watch for a while you head for the spectator button, additionally you notice it tells you how many spectators there are currently. From this screenshot, it is also easy to see which conditions are enabled by the server and distinguished by GREEN\RED or ON\OFF. They can function in many different combinations that greatly change the way the game plays, server diversity is something we are greatly encouraging!

Character Selection Menu
In this example of the MI6 character selection screen shown below, you can see we are on the Bond character in the scroll. Bond has multiple "skins" or outfits, if you will. Three to be exact, so far, which will give a greater range to the server diversity. The scroll arrows work very smoothly, and you can choose to hover it for slow scrolling or clicking, which causes it to shift to the next cue of three character images at a time.

(http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_charselect_bond.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_charselect_bond.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_charselect_baron.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_charselect_baron.jpg)

In the second example shown above, we have the Janus character select and Baron Samedi is the highlighted feature. It is our eventual plan to have multiple skins\outfits for most characters, as like the Bond character. One thing we must note, on non-team play conditions ALL of the characters pile together into one selection menu. Also in BETA 3, you cannot stray with team play enabled, from the restrictions in place for character selection. So if you want to select Bond for instance during a team play environment, you must select "MI6" to be that character, you cannot be on Janus and play as Bond or any other M16 character or vise versa.

Many of our general HUD art, which you see during normal game-play has been fully reworked as well including the improvements to the: New Additions such as:
Shown below are Round Timer and Radar Indicator
(http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_secondnotices.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_secondnotices.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_ammopickup.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_ammopickup.jpg)
Weapon Selection Menu, Weapon and Ammo indicators, and the Blood Screen
(http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_weaponselect.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_weaponselect.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_weaponammo.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_weaponammo.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3_bloodanimation.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3_bloodanimation.jpg)
Note: These screenshots are photoshopped, and do not indicated any sort of split screen multiplayer.

Radar Further Explained:
Basically, the WHITE dots are your teammates [if enabled], and the GREEN dots are enemies. The way the teammates in this screen above are shown, are to alert you when people are above/below you in a vertical sense. So likely in this map, Control, the teammates were on the 2nd or 3rd tier of the main control room.

An addition we've added is our 'Anti-Camping' feature. When players remain still for a short period of time, the color will turn from GREEN to ORANGE then to RED on the fly, on the radar.  No more easy camping in GoldenEye: Source, while radar is enabled.

After Action Report [death-match/team]
(http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3_endrounddm.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3_endrounddm.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3_endroundtdm.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3_endroundtdm.jpg)

The Awards
The awards are back and look amazing, with their own icon and formatted to fit the report screen, shown above. The maximum amount of awards given per round is six. Awards are only given to the MOST DESERVING players, this is calculated based on a sophisticated stat tracking and ratio system we've implemented into GoldenEye: Source

(http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_achievement.jpg) (http://goldeneyesource.net/media/2009/jan26/beta3hud_achievement.jpg)

Achievements
The implementation of these shown above, have been such a great addition to replay and fun value of GolenEye: Source. You can quickly and easily check your progress on specific achievements from the main menu. Each time you gain a new achievement during game play, an indicator will appear showing what achievement you've unlocked and the progress stage you are at for completing the achievement all together, depending on the achievement. The community who helped develop some of the icons; those individuals will be given official credit when BETA 3 ships. Big Thank you to all of you!

One last thing.......

GoldenEye: Source BETA 3, coming FEBRUARY 7th, 2009!

Sincerely,
Team GoldenEye: Source

It's Febuary, he looked it up.

Yeah, one of my minor concerns was how many times May Day dies in the video.  Lots of May Day, very little Bond, only a couple Jaws in there.

I have just watched the gameplay trailer and I must say I'm amazed.

First of all, I really liked the new weapons, specially the Cougar Magnum upgrade (it really deserved one); the other weapons weren't so much of a surprise, because I knew both the AR-33 and the RCP90 were such monster.
Another thing that really blew my mind was seeing someone being Klobbered. I feel sorry for the poor guy ;).

The rest of the work is astonishing, in what comes to the achievements and hit detection, with more emphasis on the last one. The weapons sounds are really well made, specially the Phantom's one, a weapon never before seen in multiplayer.

I can see that if you finish (read final release, i.e. out of beta) this before December 31st, we're in for the mod of the year.

I can't wait for Febuary to get my hands on Beta 3.

PS: keep up the good work! ;D

Very true. It's what inspired me to be doing what I'm doing now.

A lot of really talented and dedicated people have put a lot of hours into this, and I think it shows. It looks really good for a mod, and I think the beta 3 was a great refocus in development. The release looks really solid and it looks like everyone has learned a lot from the previous builds. Everything has just been pushed up another notch for this release and I hope you guys can push on from there and really tie it together to have a finished product. It would be no small feat either, a lot of teams don't even make it this far, let alone to the finished article.

I've been waiting for this update since saturday night. But hey, good things come to those who wait. I applaud all of your hard work and dedication to this release as well as the mod. So where are you going from here? Adding more weapons? Tweaking the GE:S3.0 weapons?

I've very interested to know.

Amazing gameplay footage and weapon demonstrations. I am really looking forward to getting this when it comes out. Good job, team.

We've got plenty to do still. We have Rockets and Grenade Launchers and Moonraker and probably Tazer and rolling explosions and Live and Let Die and more characters and maps just looking at the Beta 4 checklist.

When you first install GES B3, add -dxlevel 81 to your command line by right-clicking the game title in Steam Games, summoning the Properties page, and clicking the command line option button. When the game starts up, go to options, turn off anything you don't need.  Low textures if your video ram is low, set the shadows to low quality, turn off any HDR option.  Apply, then close the game.  Remove the -dxlevel line, and start the game again.  You will miss out on the shiny glass effects, but you should get very high framerates.

I play at 120Hz refresh, so I'm very sensitive, and vocal, about frame rate issues. :D

Very nice. The attention to detail that you guys have is amazing. From the gun/ammo icons when you pick them up to the anti-camping feature. It just go to show; don't under-estimate what the fans can do. Keep up the great work, guys.

Only thing I don't like is the weapon selection sound. It's a cheesy sound that really doesn't belong in Goldeneye and is just a constant reminder that you're actually playing Half-Life 2.

One question: Are the skins just color swaps or different outfits altogether? I thought maybe that brown skin could be the outfit Bond wore from Jungle to Cradle.

The graphics from OB look really good. I have it and would like to clear something up about my current settings.

I run HL2Ep2 at 1280x1024, all set to max, no AA, textures on medium and I guess AF is 8x instead of the maximum 16x. My PC goes like this:

CPU: P4 @ 3.2 GHz
RAM: 2048 MB DDR400
GFX: Sapphire Radeon X1600PRO AGP
Windows XP Professional 32-Bit
The rest is pretty standard.

I know it is a bit offtopic, but since I saw 1Rusky's post, I thought I'd ask this here: Am I playing at full capability of my machine? Or is there some room for improvement? I guess I've got the heapsize set to half my RAM; if not, then I'll just set it to that. And btw, I get around 40 FPS while playing HL2Ep2.

Currently the skins are color swaps.  More variation in the characters is something we intend to look at once we have the weapons and gameplay features buttoned up.

PPK: The only way to know how to improve your fps is to find your current bottleneck.

Find an area with trashy FPS, and use this: sv_cheats 1; +showbudget.  This will give you a bar graph. Find the biggest bar and that's your current trouble.  If it says something like "Swap Buffers," then your video card is taxed by special effects, such as water or thermal effects.  If it's something like Animations, then your CPU can't give you any more speed.  Static Model Rendering is common in TF2.  Models are faster and easier to render than BSP, but they are less optimized and because they are better they get over-used.  Badlands suffers from model glut, as does parts of Gravel Pit.  Depending on the bottleneck, you may or may not be able to do much.

(-showbudget to turn the graph off.)

Is your P4 a 3.2 or is it overclocked to 3.2?  Also, consider an upgrade; P4 is junk compared to a Core 2 at similar clocks.
Title: Re: GES Update 1/26/09
Post by: PPK on January 27, 2009, 10:11:42 pm
It is not overclocked; just standard equipment on this side.
And thanks for the info on useful console commands!

I'd love to get me a new PC and get rid of this old piece of trash :P, but, well, lets just say that it can't be done at the present time, so I'll just have to stick to what I have...
Title: Re: GES Update 1/26/09
Post by: VC on January 28, 2009, 12:34:46 am
Overclock if your motherboard/BIOS will let you. You should be able to go +10% clock on fan cooling.  You may need to slow your RAM to do so, but that's okay for Source; which hits the CPU much harder than the RAM.

Oh man. I meant to write a comment yesterday when I saw the update the first time..but I never got the chance. AWESOME work you guys. This looks so promising and wonderful. I love to see perfect hit detection (as far as i can see from that video). AWESOME coding killermonkey. :) I can't wait till February. However, I have 5 critiques.

1) First, the weapon selection side bar has got to go. I thought you guys decided on a selection method this for this version that didn't involve the side bar from beta 1. Did none of them make it in the beta? Or at least, like a previous post said, get rid of the half life 2 sound. :)

2) I am not sure if it really is or not, but it truly seemed like the AR-33 had PERFECT accuracy...which seems a little unrealistic on a few of the kills that were shot on runway from like half way across the map. He was also burst shooting with 1 or 2 bullets and they nailed the other person every time. Just seems a little to accurate for an AR-33 while standing that far away. :)

3) Guess this isn't really a critique, but Ryan told me that there was an option to disabled the first person death cam. So if I disable that (because half life 2 physics jolt the body too much to where it makes me sick) will it just zoom out to a 3rd person view of my body dying like in counterstrike source? Also, I assume that I will also not get the blood going down the screen if I were to turn off the first person cam. Is that correct?

4) The phantom didn't seem to do very much damage. Did it seem a little weak in power to anyone?

5) The blood going down the screen was a really good implementation..however I didn't like the fact that it went "choppy." I prefer a smoother blood flow going down the screen. Maybe for the next release? Just a suggestion.

Thanks

1] thats hardly a deal for a beta, of course later we will work on this.

2] he used aim-mode, didnt you see the xhair, and he was using burst firing. To get better at our game play like he does....

3] not sure on this, maybe ryan is right, ive personally not investigated but blood will go down the screen no matter which view so up to you.

4] all weapons are extensively par to their n64 counterparts period. If its something, its your perception over time or false calculation.

5] The footage for the trailer must be noted as being outdated animation. A new animation has been put in this week, others could confirm but i believe its a vast improvement!  [my comp is down i cant play our internal beta to be more precise in these answers]

:D

1) Personally, I use wheel and direct keys, so you don't need to see the weapon selection bar if you don't want to.  Fast switch for the win.

2) AR-33 is a powerful weapon, and very accurate when used appropriately.  Perhaps you also saw the part where I started spamming it at Oddjob and did next to nothing.

3) I am not abreast of death cam options.

4) Phantom is a powerful weapon, as mighty as AR-33.  However, it has one of the widest accuracy ranges.  The clip used isn't a great demonstration of how to use Phantom efficiently, but it was a better clip than the one I originally selected, which had too much running-around, and Phantom was still effective, which is good news for the unskilled, and for me when I'm being nooby.

Also worth noting is that shotguns have been buffed a bit since filming.

5) Not my department.

By buffed do you mean increased damage?
Title: Re: GES Update 1/26/09
Post by: VC on January 28, 2009, 10:58:52 pm
It's more of a gamma ramp.  Minimum damage is unchanged, maximum damage is unchanged (though it was buffed above Goldeneye 007 for balance reasons at an earlier time), but mid-range damage is increased.  This makes its usefulness drop off more slowly over range.  It's still poor over a distance, but between the buffs it was having trouble in dogfights that it should have been strong in.

Since the second adjustment I've heard nothing but positive feedback in testing.

1. On the situation with weapon selection a few of the devs have discussed some ideas but in beta 3 the side bar will be the weapons selection, and besides you can always have quick weapon switch on to make it like ge64.

2. Same as wake said he was zooming in using burst fire so the spread stayed low, read vc's tutorial on how to play for more specifics of the method he uses.

3. Here let me just post a pic of the multiplayer menu (if any dev thinks this shouldn't be announced/release feel free to edit) (KM: Outdated!!)

*Dual weapons are not in beta3.

4. Take in mind the phantom was never in multiplayer but all our weapons have been intensively checked and tested to make sure they fit their counter-parts.

5. I know the team wants to do more with the blood on the screen but right now this is just the first version in game almost like a proof of concept but it works rather well and it is smooth.

Heh, I just realized that the last tune in the trailer is for elevator B (Caverns). ;)

Looking good with the menus.

Awesome job. I really like the weapon sounds, especially the PP7's trademark *DONK*. Also applies to the Golden Gun.
If you release this before my reading week, I will love you forever. After, and I will hate you forever because it'll be midterm time. :(

Hey now, they have all of February to release it. I'd rather wait a few more days for them to get things smooth than have some annoying bug. (Not saying there will be though)

There are plenty of bugs; but they are being exterminated in an orderly fashion.
