A question about GES wiki pages
« on: June 06, 2014, 09:50:47 pm »

This is a question I was supposed to ask more than a year ago: what happened to the GES wiki a couple of years (can't recall how many) ago when the wiki became a collection of broken links? There are some working links such as "Basic gameplay", "Weapons" and "Awards". If you click the "Weapons" link you get another collection of broken links, none of them working.

I am absolutely positive that there used to be well written weapon data available (damage, accuracy, description) for every weapon in the game a few years back. This hasn't been the case for a long, long time. I wonder why, since the weapon damages haven't changed since that time and all the weapons function as they did before. So the reason obviously isn't outdated information.

I believe I know all the weapon data by heart, but sometimes I'd like to paste a link to the wiki for a new GES player, but then the issue becomes that the data is no longer available. I also remember there being a cool looking list of official maps, looking similar to the mission selection screen in the original GoldenEye007. But not anymore.

It's not like it would require any work like doing the weapon descriptions since the descriptions have already been done. Why aren't they there for every new player to read and learn from?

Anyone can push changes to the wiki, you just need to make an account.  Some of the pages can be restored by clicking the old revisions (clock) link on the right-hand side of the page, which is what I've done with the pages you mentioned.

au contraire, that's exactly the spirit of a wiki.
Wikipedia also depends on content published by the users.

If Arnold Palmer is Roger, then it's pretty sad that he's continuing to act this way.

I'm going to take the bait and say that I don't believe for a minute that you have the civil capacity to hold an actual job. In all my interactions with you, you've been insanely schizophrenic. That comment just proves how much of a materialistic shit you are, too.

And if you moved on... why are you still here, pestering us about this mod?

Well that doesn't solve his problem though, it just creates one more step for new players to do when the links should be working to begin with. I'd make an account and mess around with the page and try to revert some links but it's after midnight where I live and I'm tired. lol

Took me a while to make a move, but today I finally tried to do something about it. I didn't know how to write in the proper wiki syntax so I had to study that first. I did some initial testing with the "PP7" page at first (I didn't first know about the "Playground" page where you can test the syntax, sorry for that).

If you take a look at the "Weapons" --> "PP7" page, you will see what I could come up with in a couple of hours. Nothing special, just a more readable page, although not as nice-looking (aestetic-wise) as the original page before its code got broken. All weapon data and descriptions are there as they were before, I didn't make any changes to them. Some links I removed (leading to the PKing Soup achievements, pages that don't even exist anymore), as well as some old code that became broken at some point (why the code got broken in the first place beats me).

If this work is to be continued, the pictures of the weapons are needed. Some of the pictures, like the one with the two PP7 pistols I used, are found here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/goldeneye-source/images/pp7#imagebox. However, not all weapon images are found there, but I recognize that many of the colored weapon images used to be used in the weapon data pages. In fact, images for most of the weapons aren't there. I would need someone to provide me with links to all weapon images if I am to update all the weapon pages.

If I'm gonna do the updating work, I will be focusing to get the data out there, and not focus too much on the aestetic part (how the table boundaries should look like etc.), as I'm not that good with the wiki coding (yet).

There. The weapon descriptions are now out there for all new players read. All the weapon descriptions have now been restored by rewriting the broken wiki code. Yesterday I asked about missing weapon images, but I came to realize that the images are still there on the wiki server and not deleted, only the code had become broken. Still, it seems that some weapons never had a picture of them. If someone knows that there is some images that could be used, please let me know or add them yourself to the weapon wiki.

It appears that the damage data for the flag, and the goldeneye key/intelligence is missing. Does anyone know what kind of damage they do? Is it equivalent to regular slappers damage or perhaps hunting knife damage?

I did not change any weapon data or descriptions during the updating process, except for the Sniper rifle. Its description claimed under "Changes from GoldenEye 007" that the sniper rifle does not have an adjustable zoom, which was outdated information. I removed that claim from the description completely.

What was lost in the updating process are hyperlinks to the weapon-related achivements (the achievements are now only listed). It would be a lot of work to create new links to pages that don't even exist, so I didn't do it. I did what I found important.

EDIT: Could you KillerMonkey, or someone else able to edit the wiki pages and having knowledge of the coding, have a look at the "Gameplay scenarios" wiki page? It looks like the page could be very easily and quickly made readable, but I'm not sure. The code in red is the old broken code, right? What if we deleted the red code completely? Wouldn't that fix the page in a minute of work, or does the code have some purpose that I'm not aware of? I find the "Gameplay Scenarios" page to be very important to be out there for everybody to read (consider LALD, for example). I would fix it right away (by deleting the unnecessary red code), if I was sure that's ok to do.

EDIT #2: I'm offering my help to further bring the GES wiki pages into a publishable form. The "Release documentation" page (http://wiki.geshl2.com/v4.1_release_documentation) is another important page to be fixed. However, there are a couple of things that makes me not the best candidate to do it:
  • I'm not completely qualified to say what claims and details have been changed or outdated in the release documentation. I would need someone to point out what is to be changed. The release documentation would be best to be checked by KM himself, I think, but I'm sure he is busy doing other work (but I do think the release information is very important because it teaches people how the mod works! Radar fundamentals, _invulnerability system_...
  • I don't understant or know how to do the coding, that is used a lot in the wiki (for example: "ge_armorrespawntime seconds <tt>(10)</tt> tag_b4<br/ >". Wouldn't "ge_armorrespawntime seconds (10)" be enough? I guess <tt> and <tt/> defines the text formatting, but the programming language has been changed, thus breaking the code if I'm not mistaken. Changed from what to what? tag_b4? What the hell is that? I do have some programming background, but mostly just a little beyond basics in Java, Pascal and Basic languages, nothing fancy...

I will do no changes to any wiki pages until I'm sure I know what I'm doing and encouraged to do it. But I so badly would want them to be out there... :(

It's quite sad you people rely on the community to update the wiki...last time i check it wasn't our problem...

"Wikipedia is written collaboratively by largely anonymous Internet volunteers who write without pay. Anyone with Internet access can write and make changes to Wikipedia articles, except in limited cases where editing is restricted to prevent disruption or vandalism. Users can contribute anonymously, under a pseudonym, or, if they choose to, with their real identity."

The devs are busy working on the game than editing the Wiki. Instead of complaining, you should go and edit the pages that need to be proofread. At least thank the devs for using Wikipedia instead of plain html which none of us have control over.
