Info about PC servers.
« on: November 03, 2010, 09:51:03 pm »

Hello again, Everyone.
I don't know if anyone knows something about servers, But I'd like a heads up.

I can get a :
NetFinity X330 series IBM 18.7GB
For no more than 25$. Its an old PC Server my local university is selling, And my father can buy it for this price.

I'd like to know what can I do with this, Is it useful in any way?

To be honest: No, you cannot get much done with that, as far as a game server is concerned.

From the little research I did looks like its a P3 CPU, limited SD ram, and with 18gb of storage you might get one or two maybe games installed after O/S.

So a game server is very limited, maybe a server for older games, but really isn't made as a game server anyway.

You could fit in a larger HDD and would be a great file server, and rackmounted servers you can typically hide away pretty easy, and use somewhat limited power.

But also depends on your home connection/friends with fast connection hookup. I had a friend who had a friend who worked at a local ISP and we gave him a old computer of ours. I used this back in Beta1 and also in CS:S. It was pretty dang good server since it had a near dedicated T3 line running to it.

So if you can get the internet for it, then might be a not bad choice for a file server.

Hmm well I have a good ISP for downloading, But my upload speed is really bad, So it must be worthless for hosting.

So I guess that won't be very useful to me, Except maybe to store some old backup. I got an old IDE 250GB HD that I could put in there.
Thanks for the help, Much appreciated.

What I would do with that is transform it into a FTP server like Major was saying. I took my other pc, added a 500GB and setup filezilla server on it, put all of your backuped movies, games, .txt files, pictures and host it on your LAN connection. You can then put that pc in ure basement, connect from your pc, and upload ure files to it or download. I get speeds like 20MB/s sometimes 12MB/s depends on the router and cable quality.

Im gonna do this again in the future. It saves me time from pulling out my external HD and connecting it, blah blah blah lol

If you need help with setting up ftp server, ask me anytime.

The best way to get a game server is to take your old PC and use that. A game server (especially for source) takes minimal resources, the one you posted would work fine, mine for example is a 2.8 P4 i think with 512 DDR400.

Either way if your upload speed is bad youre screwed from day 1.

Your current upload is acceptable for 6-8 players. But that is all dependent that you don't run any torrents in the background and you will even notice lag when sending larger emails :/

Well I didn't think of using it as a game server, The only game I would ever want to create a server for is CS 1.6 if I want to do a game of blahhh, whaaa or woohoo_cars with my buddies, Which happens rarely these days anyway. I used my old P4 to do so.

I more thought of hosting a website with it, Or something like that. I guess I'll just use it as an FTP server, That's the only use I find for it.
Thanks for your replies everyone, Much appreciated.

Should be powerful enough for a web server.
