       I've been working for a little while a custom map, hoping to have a nice finished product around ~Beta4. I'll update this thread with little teaser shots maybe as frequent as once a week or so.


       I've taken an old buddies HL2 map, and doing a full conversion to GE007'esk Dam_Backzone(aka just the dam it self).

      It will be the dam, with the legendary 3 towers with underground passage, server-room, bungee tower, ect. But with a small twist ;) More on that coming SOON!

Development continues:

I'm not aiming for a 1:1 replica, more of a close but artistic change...well like GE:S' goal, but map wise like Egyptian, or such.

Recently started development of Dam Tunnels, here is a part of the progress:

Yeah I disabled motion to keep from all the boxes(there are like 8-10 there) from flying around. Just were added to waist space, but might stay.

Trouble with the single player maps is they are very linear may want a bit of artistic license to make tham a little more MP friendly.

Starting to loose steam, been mapping for couple weeks straight, for 4-5 hours a day. And when your having problems with 1 area for 3 days straight you get pissed and really wanna stop working.

Have gotten really pissed and angling angles in hammer, and when I have to use Vertex manipulation for half of it, it leads to alot of problems, but I have a temp system in for the area with problems till I wanna tackle it again.

I have basically all the original Dam roughed out, and ready for texturing and props. But just the Dam would be boring and linear like keefy said, so another system is being developed.

I got about 6 things I wanna finish, then ill compile, and take some more shots.


And I really feel for ya SharpSh00tah, takes me 10-15mins to compile the full map(only on fast settings, like lighting, etc) and that's on a 3.2ghz Quadcore, don't even wanna imagine Runway on a single core, and all the versions you were uploading during testing, Props bro!

Strange takes me like 5 minutes or less to compile maps on my quad lol

Still needs Texturing, props, decals, and everything but coming along smoother now. And don't mind that whole huge block on the right side, still need to mock up something for that.

And for some reason fog wasn't wanting to work half the time, so there should be a light fog in the distance.

A very basic one is there, just basically to test distance, with fog and stuff. But I have ideas for it. Need to think of some cool easteregg for it..lol

Doing final tweaks, testing now with full compile with lighting, once I'm happy, HDR compile will be done, then you'll know were it is Druk.

so I am a little confused major, why do the mountains curl AROUND the dam....shouldn't they continue to go on like a river does? I don't think I have really seen a damn that just stops in the side of a mountain :) Awesome looking map though. Can't wait to get some cool effects goin in there.

@druk: Just use the original Dam theme in the background in the meantime. That's what I do.

Pretty fun little test, got some sweet ideas with the help of Druk, Macc and KM.

Yah I was testing my new overclock settings and finally, right before I was about to exit, my computer crashed... so I tuned it down a little and now its running like a dream

BTW, love the fan elevator, that is going to be totally epic when I throw a remote mine down the shaft and blow up VC who is chasing me

         I finally bought a good Semi-Pro Digital Camera (Nikon D70s, couple years old, but still pwns 80% of others, also all I have now is some S-Pro Level Film cameras') so I might leave my house one of these days and have a shot at this so called "Life" I've read about in magazine.
 
          But still will be working on it in the early hours of the morning when Drukqaddik is hounding me from his work. So progress should stay on track. Plus I gotta make some Custom Decals and such to link Fac/Dam/Runway together, so will be photoshoping some as well.

         Also waiting for KM to code in that Portal Gun ;)

         And I smell a cool launch video when its finished, maybe a G-Mod bungee off dam, into a cool climatic ass woopin inside...hmmm

Haven't done really any work on map (taking mapping break). But tonight I threw together a quick elevator for connection of top of Dam and bottem Dam. Very, Very quick work, but work indeed.

My only crit is that there is some dev textures on the lower left and this map is WIP, WTF! haha jk dude looks awesome!

EDIT: actually ona  second look, I realise that you are using a "light" entity there, you should use a "light_spot" and direct if comming from that light stand! It would look so much more sexier than it does now!

After being plagued with Hammer Displacment bugs, I finally got some more work done.

Had to redo this room 3 times do to some stupid displacment issues, and could never find the problem, and had to delete it all. But it's moving along.

Just threw a couple props in to make it look less empty, shouldn't look anything like this in the final version, will be more detailed and neater.

So, has there been any updates to this map at all? I'm really looking forward to checking it out myself. It also has served as inspiration for me to try my best to make curved edges and stuff like the outside of the dam.

As far as the curved walls, the Dam wall is just a big displacement, not the neatest thing ever, but hard to notice at its scale.

Does  "Hidepanel specgui" work in this mod?  Its a nice thing to use as it should remove the borders when in spec mode.

I use this in HL2DM to remove it.

Nothing new on Dam, but you should get a new Beta3 map here in a month or so(hopefully, 80% done).

nothing AT ALL new with Dam. What have you been doing making the other map but not dam...you were getting close to being done I thought....you need to finish that map pronto... :)

I wasn't happy with the layout of the Dam YOUR use to. So I took the version YOU know and made a different map, one you will see soon.

Here is a small hint at the "feel" or "mood" of this new map:

As far as the new Dam... well its taken a back burner do to school and such, just not enough time to really work on it.

Woaow 1 yeah ago, and whats happend to this great map ( sometimes i think the customs maps are better than the official, it remember me more on the N64 Version. )

Emillia i hate to be a pessimist but i think that Major has given up on this map 3 years ago and probarly wont continue on it...if only we could get the dam level from this

You're reading to much into it.
It was only a joke because on our team it would never work to sneak in something without letting the management know, because the ppl who manage the mod also actively develop it.
