Title: [Valve Error] Invalid Steam key size
Post by: Mark [lodle] on February 21, 2009, 05:49:02 am
Seems valve broke mods again. :(

Until this is fixed we wont be releasing the beta 3.1 patch.

P.s. Seems a couple of servers still work. :(

Wow VALVe. You are seriously the greatest, stupidest, developer ever, but for some reason we still love you for your SDK. :)

Apparently they've never heard of testing.

Well, they seem to be very willing to break the very mods that encourage people to buy Valve games.

I didn't even know the achievements for Episode 2 were not working. It just so happens that I'm playing it for the first time and missed out on 5 achievements because of that stupid update.

And then we have GES with only 4 active servers. This just sucks hardcore.

lol i have modded and programmed with source for a damn long time i know its in's and out's as well as running and setting up servers.

working with valve games and software gets you used to dealing with things that break.  ;D

but i will say the newest invalid steam key size workaround is not my own some guys in the gmod community figured it out before i had a chance to.

Come on now, valve doesnt hate us. They just dont care too much if we are inconvenienced in stead of the games that make them far more dolla dollas.

GoldenEye: Source loves the source engine and everything it affords us to create. But yes unfortunately we will be waiting on valve to properly fix tf2 dedicated server for the modding community ; until no workarounds are needed, to release this patch we have.

In the meantime crusade against the steam forums demanding results :) we could use your soldiary

Hey guys, I didn't see that there was ANOTHER bug and ANOTHER patch to fix the servers till just now.  I have patched and tested all 4 of my Bradley University Servers, and denoted Patched in server name tag, so they should all be working properly (or at least until Valve breaks them again :P)

So play away!

Did GES contact valve about when the fix will be issued? I hate waiting lol. I want to get my server working, becuase it doesnt appear in the list.

I did post a thread in the steam forums but no one responded to it.

If setup rite it should show up on the list and be joinable.

I've gotten 3 servers to work fine, and the server host's that read the forum, all there servers are up(aka WNx, NW, TLP, BU, and more).

Yeah, despite my BU servers being joinable, I haven't seen anyone using them for about a week now.  It seems very few clients know there is a patch, and just assume the game is broken or something. It's quite sad.  Hopefully all will be remedied soon  [cough] Valve [/cough]  :)

Bet they're all getting dropped with a VAC error.

What hurts is that those who download our mod and try to play it are going to have bad impression, meanwhile just a week and a half ago we had hundreds of players all the time. Really bad timing for us, and mods released around that time.

I've noticed that I can connect to my dedicated LAN server if the following term pops up in the server log:

VAC secure mode is disabled.

Go figure.  It was happening after the first manual map change.  Today I can't get it to deactivate no matter what I try.

I've had no luck trying to connect to it over the internet, but I'm still examining my router settings.

--update:  I just found out that I have to set sv_lan 1 in the server.cfg.  Then the VAC message pops up and my login problems go away after map change.  When I set sv_lan to 0, VAC never goes away and I can only connect for 30 seconds before I get the no steam logon error.

Is this part of the bug, or did I screw something up?  Any help is appreciated.

I do not understand about the client patch.... I know the wiki contains the dedicated server patch.

Sorry, is it this?   http://forums.goldeneyesource.net/index.php/topic,3227.0.html

so I basically do the client and dedicated patches to get everything running normally?

thanks to all

i noticed some strange stuff on my linux machine i had the same error "Steam logon failed".

Adding master server 72.165.61.189:27011
Adding master server 68.142.72.250:27011
Connection to Steam servers successful.

if your server doesn't say the "Connection to Steam servers successful." i t will probably kick the user within 2 minutes.

try killing the server and restarting it.
somehow when using a different master server it just works  :-\

are you using linux?, the "old" linux libs may not be completely correct and may be causing it you may want to try and switch to a win32 server. :(

Windows Server 2003 for us. Updating with a command that looks like:
hldsupdatetool -command update -game tf -dir gesource_apollo

Was getting Invalid Steam key size again after the Scout update, so got new engine and steam_api binaries out of my Steam client. Now back to the same as before.

Consistently when I start up the server it will drop me in about 2 minutes. Kick message I think is the typical "No Steam logon
." The classic message dialog pops up saying there's a connection problem with VAC, and offering to troubleshoot it (all info for client-side problems, i.e. I'm an idiot and my firewall is wrong). I don't get this problem with the CSS pub on the same machine, so I'm pretty sure it's not a network problem for the server, or any kind of problem with my Steam client. Of course I've restarted Steam on my end plenty of times, as well as the server.

When i first downloaded the GES server files.. I setup the server the way I wanted it. Then I saved all the server files on  dvd-r disc and shoved it up my butt for later use.

Then the problem with valve came which fucked up all servers. Well i then i tried change stuff in the server cfg folder, but my server would not appear in the list no matter what i use, patch, gameinfo changes etc...

So I found that dvd disc, shoved it in my computers ass and uploaded the srcds files. Ran the executable file and WALAAH works. connected to steam servers successfully and shows on the server list. Im not advertising to get people in my server, but if you want to join its     Goldeneye Source Beta 3|East Coast Server|

Do you guys need any files from my server folder? any gameinfo that may help? Thanks

Edit: im working on the server so you may see it locked or not see it yet. Thanks

Does Valve even know about this? This is taking a long time to get fixed and now we'll probably have to wait until Monday at the earliest...
Title: Re: [Valve Error] Invalid Steam key size
Post by: Geko010 on February 28, 2009, 08:10:33 pm
No kidding...  I'm also very confused as to why people keep saying it's fixed.  I'm also seeing lots of GES servers up and running, and I'm assuming that they have been rolled back to older versions or something???

Anyway, I just wanted to post my latest developments... lame as they are...

I saw in another thread that you can add -insecure to your .bat start file to turn VAC off.  This works, but we're all still getting booted after 1 min for No Steam Logon.

My server is connecting to the steam servers:
Adding master server 69.28.140.246:27011
Adding master server 69.28.140.247:27011
Connection to Steam servers successful.
And we're all still getting booted after 1 min for No Steam Logon.
I've also made sure it connects to other master servers, and it's still a no-go.

Updating my client with the patch allows me to see my server in the search results, but I can't see any other servers on the internet.  We still get booted.

Oh, one last thing to note is that this is a brand new installation.  I've never run a source server before, and had to install tf2 as suggested on the wiki.  I'm assuming that I got the updated version with the VAC issue and I don't have any old files to roll back to.

I'll keep trying though.  This game is worth it  ;D

Title: Re: [Valve Error] Invalid Steam key size
Post by: steven_m64 on March 01, 2009, 03:06:17 am
the "No Steam Logon" error is a bit of a catch all with source.

can be caused by:
-server problems
-Incorrectly setup server
-server firewall/router problems
-Clients loosing connection to steam servers
-Clients copies of steam bugging out requiring the user to re log in (most often seen by users who have auto-login enabled)

is your server windows or linux based.

i'm really starting to think the no steam login problem some users are getting are somewhat unrelated to the latest valve f-up.

especially since i have yet to get this issue personally even once.
Title: Re: [Valve Error] Invalid Steam key size

I'm almost embarrassed to admit...  I'm running the server on WinXP Pro 32bit.  It runs like a dream in LAN mode, I only have the problem trying to configure for a public server.

I've poked holes in my firewall (27000-27020 UDP, 27020-27050 TCP) and I have run other game servers in the past, so I don't think my connection is to blame.

So far it's been 100% failure.  We have 3 computers on our network, and all 3 consistently have the issue.  I don't think anyone has connected over the internet because I never see it listed in the search results.  I have to use the console to connect to it.

I did play with the server.cfg, but like I said it runs great in LAN mode.  Here it is:
// *********** SERVER & PASSWORD INFO ***************
// Change it to 1 if you want a LAN only Server

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone but I'm pretty sure this is purely the Valve-screwup. When I try to run my server it sometimes turns up in my favorites list and other times it doesn't. When it doesn't I also can only connect through the console.

Don't see any flaws in your server.cfg btw. Except for the fact that you use automatics on LTK mode. --> Boooooooooooo!!

Make sure you installed the little Bin Trick:

Goes into /orangebox/bin folder on the server.

That's right, I forgot what my original error was.

I followed the instructions to use GCFScape and manually extract the files to fix Invalid Steam Key Size the first time around.  I used lodle's downloads just now, to see if it would fix No Steam Logon but it doesn't look like it.

This was my sequence of events:

I'm going to install it on my linux box and see if I can replicate this or not.  Thank you to all who replied, they were great suggestions!  This forum has been awesome!  :D

Except for the fact that you use automatics on LTK mode. --> Boooooooooooo!!
I would love to create my own weapon sets eventually, but automatics has been a fun testing set so far. DSKFTW!

Sometimes I switch to KLOBBS! when I'm fealing mean.  Does that make me a bad person?  :P

actually the dedicated server patch from here with the 2 changed files:

are actually required for clients to be able to play correctly and see the servers.

Title: Re: [Valve Error] Invalid Steam key size

no steam logon error is a different issue i think thats actually unrelated to the problem at hand.
Title: Re: [Valve Error] Invalid Steam key size
Post by: Kujo on March 03, 2009, 08:07:14 am
Yeah, I dont think its very clear that the client has to install the Dedicated server patch as well.  For instance, my client is patched, and I can connect to my patched server fine, but if I try to connect to an un-patched server, which I have found by using another client which is unpatched, it wont let me connect.  That goes for the un-patched client and my patched server as well.

So, until valve gets their butts around to fixing this, EVERY client and server needs to apply the dedicated server patch, and we can all be happy for a while.

You're right I totally missed the client-patch. Wish I had seen that before. I can play on my own server again YAY! Pistols LTK ftw

no steam logon error is a different issue i think thats actually unrelated to the problem at hand.
Happen to have an idea of what that issue is about or, more importantly, a way to fix it?

Happy news, I applied the patch to my client by copying the 2 files into \Program Files\steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\gesource\ (after I backed up the original gameinfo.txt).

I can see about 30 servers, which are all empty.  I connected to a few of them and they seem to work fine, including my own!!  I can see it in the search results along with everyone else.  The No Steam Logon error disappeared as well.

What I don't see are any of the servers with people playing, even after I uncheck Show Map List.  So, patch at your own risk.

because of the simple fact nobody is playing since everyone who does not have the dedicated server/client patch cant play and servers are screwed up due to the fact you have to use old binaries on the patched servers to allow people to join.

god knows when valve will finally repair it all.

I see servers... and i see servers with players... pretty much all the time. No way near as many as just after release but theres usually at least a server with 12 or so players and usually a few smaller ltk or yolt servers that are populated aswell....

i see 16 servers now, 0 players

The only thing that has changed for me is the drop in players. I still see a few servers with about 6 or so people in them, it's enough to play it but not nearly as much as it was the first week. I've experienced none of these valve issues so I have no idea what everyone is talking about... The only problem I see is that 3/4 of the players disappeared. There are still about 15 servers or so that show up though. Only 4 of which are populated at all and its usually a small number under 10 people.

I really don´t understand the problem here, I´ve always seen servers with people playing.

Is anybody else getting a "Disconnected because VAC servers cannot be contacted" message after trying to play for 5 minutes?

I have not made any changes to my firewall/router/whatever so the above bullshit help that Valve gives doesn't work. I even tried the "disconnect from steam friends" trick mentioned in a few threads. I am at a loss and cannot even test (play) my own fucking game...

The situation you mentioned never happened to me KM, but I always play in Linux servers, if that is helpful. I play at the WN servers.

I'm having this issue on both my Windows machine and my dedicated Linux server.  Tried all the patches and so on, fresh install (just found out about this mod on friday :o) with the latest server, etc.  It does this even if I run the server with the -insecure switch, it's a "No steam logon" error.

Yeah, I've seen that before, but I didn't change anything and it suddenly started happening after one of Valve's updates, which made me suspicious.

The only thing it could possibly be on my computer is the firewall, but the firewall simply bothers me for new versions of applications. Even if it was that, I removed the permissions and reset them and it still fails. Putting the dedicated server patch files on the client end doesn't work. Disabling VAC does nothing for it, either. @killermonkey, yes. It happens seemingly randomly up to 5 minutes in.

Thing is, local servers work fine. So all signs point to something being totally borked on Valve's end, at least from my perspective. Thanks for trying to help, though.

EDIT: I take what I said back. It's happening on local servers too.
EDIT2: Nope, I'm wrong again. It seems to only happen on local servers when one side isn't patched properly, but this does not hold with dedicated servers.
EDIT3: ?! I tried connecting to my dedicated server with a patched client earlier and it didn't work, but it does now (at least, it didn't boot me for 7 minutes). I'm confused and/or insane.

Valve has fixed it:

Quote
Since Team Fortress 2 and Day of Defeat: Source are on a separate Orangebox engine depot that is incompatible with MODs, we've added a new hldsupdatetool entry to sync to the old files.  So if your running a MOD and need to use the old TF 2 engine and dedicated server depots, use the game name "orangebox".  There is also an entry named "episode1", in case you need to download the engine and dedicated server files for an EP1 MOD.

i made a post bitching about it still not being fixed for over 15 days on the dedicated servers lists yesterday maybe that kicked their asses into gear :D

so...I am sorry to be so out of the loop, but has this TF2 server issue that messed all the servers up been fixed yet? It doesn't seem like it judging by your guys messages, but I have been computerless for about 1 week so I didn't know if anything changed since then and i just missed it.

My thoughts:  I still only see like 17 servers or something and nobody playing...guessing something is still wrong from that. On top of that, they still says "patched" so something has to still not work.

Am I right?

Did valve even say they know about the problem yet? Or is everything still up in the air?

The servers need to update using orangebox instead of tf and it should all be good.

Lodle, make a sticky post that informs server hosts of the fix, and how to do it.
