Title: Should I record ePSXe in 4:3 or 16:9?
Post by: codemaster94 on August 28, 2016, 07:16:34 pm
Hi everyone,

So I've been uploading ePSXe gameplay videos on my YouTube for a few weeks now and I've been having a tough time in choosing which aspect ratio to record and upload in. Now I know most of the games were standard 4:3 aspect ratio at the time, and that some may have had an option to toggle Widescreen 16:9. However, this is from a "recording and viewing on YouTube" perspective.

So there's 3 choices offered. I can make it 4:3 (1440x1080) which is the max 4:3 HD resolution I can use, 16:9 (1920x1080) which is the max 16:9 HD resolution I can use without downscaling something higher (which I don't really intend to do for a PS1 game), OR, I can use a Widescreen Hack built-in to ePSXe 2.0.5 and keep the gameplay widescreen (but having the drawback of the HUD and menus being stretched 16:9 format).

Here's my ePSXe Gameplay videos, all in 1920x1080 stretched 16:9 format (except TWINE City of Walkways walkthrough): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJmNjZ92pUArPhJ6i4AL0A7JwOL5fD13y (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJmNjZ92pUArPhJ6i4AL0A7JwOL5fD13y)

Here's a 4:3 image of the game (don't mind the HUD, just the outer image as the photos were taken as soon as the characters showed up): http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/267223080223008312/9B2464ED947ED0BE9FFB53E35437D90A1D355489/ (http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/267223080223008312/9B2464ED947ED0BE9FFB53E35437D90A1D355489/)

Here's a 16:9 stretched image of the game (don't mind the HUD, just the outer image as the photos were taken as soon as the characters showed up):

Here's a TWINE walkthrough level I recorded in 4:3:

Here's a TWINE walkthrough level I recorded in 16:9:

I haven't recorded the widescreen hack, but by the looks of it, the FOV is turned up slightly, which makes the menus look stretched but the gameplay looks widescreen, if that makes sense, as indicated in this video here:

So what do you guys think? I asked 10 Steam friends last night, which turned out to be a 50/50 vote. I flipped a coin which won 4:3, but I'm still biased after presenting it.

Thanks,
choadmeister :)
