Title: Renting a Goldeneye Source dedicated server
Post by: Bassir on February 01, 2009, 10:22:09 pm
What would I have to rent in order to set up a Goldeneye source beta 3 dedicated sever?

I've been looking at GameServers (http://www.gameservers.com/game_servers/team_fortress_2.php), and DarkStar (https://www.darkstarllc.com/order/index.php), but they only list TF2. How would I make it a Goldeneye Source Beta 3 dedicated server once I rent it?

email the companies and ask them this.

"with a TF2 dedicated server would I be able to host an OrangeBox total conversion modification? It will be GoldenEye: Source beta 3"

if they say no, those people wouldnt be a good idea :)

Wil do, thanks.

Also, is there a list of hosts that do allow them?

I know of a good host thats cheap, that takes requests.

ImpulseGaming.Net (http://www.impulsegaming.net/whmcs/aff.php?aff=017)
Good buddies of mine, as I have a JKA server hosted thru them. Follow the link provided.

Alternitavly, if you have Xfire:

Quantum - Xfire: bar7737 (Owner of IG)
Demoshock - Xfire: metogod (sales and support rep)

Tell them that Hyperstrike sent you and they'll cut you a good deal.

I am also interested in setting up a GE:S BETA 3 mod. Let me know what they say. I added them to my list in xfire.

I spoke to the owner this morning, shortly after I posted their link.
The conversation is posted in the post below that, just make sure you tell them that I sent you though.

I spoke to Demoshock and he also told me that they take suggestions, and will let his boss know and that IG.net is looking into moving toward beta support games depending on popularity!

Tell him I said hi.

Done and done.

He asked for an email with information for installing so I gave him the wiki and the main page. He says he will setup a test server to see how much RAM and CPU it uses then is going to give me prices per slot accordingly. I also mentioned to him I was going to wait until BETA 3 came out to get a server.

The reason I want to get a server going is because 9/10 times I join a server it is either dedicated and the person's comp can't handle it or it is in Europe/Africa. I am in Florida so this is not good for my kill/death ratio!

Aye. Is it going to be an official server? Like, are you going to name it after this mod for the dev team etc?

Yeah it will be an official Goldeneye Source server, hopefully in Texas. Depending on the price, hopefully 16 slots to start then if it gets more popular who knows!?

Well make sure that you tell them that you got referred by me. Reason being they have an affiliate system, that every referral you give takes 10% of your monthly server rent for each person you refer. ^^

Well if you are getting the server, call it "The Rat's Dartboard - GoldenEye: Source Beta 3", or have something similar relating to you.

The idea was because your name is "Ratdart", so "Rat + Dart", and "Dart = Dartboard".

Well, I defiantly like those idea's, especially being in Texas myself :). We very much appreciate your efforts, and we will work out something to try and get you the Server Files for BETA 3 early, if you've already obtained the sever.

I'm glad you guys are actually taking a liking to this. I thought I may get yelled at for what could be mistaken as advertising. =/

Just waiting for a price I suppose from the main guy over there. Hopefully I can setup paypal payments monthly?

If I was paying for slots, I would recommend starting at around 10 players. You can always add more. Our suggested player cap is 16 right now, and possibly higher on the really large maps.

Yes, they do have paypal payments which are due from whenever you order. eg you order on the st, its due to be payed on the 1st of every month.

You cannot pay in advance (ei. pay for several months in advance) for the sole reason that if something happens, you could lose your investment (Not that it will, just its their belief due to alot of shady operation with other server companies.)

Beta 3 is going to be grand... So much enthusiasm about the servers... Wish I could setup one here, but I simply don't have the means.

Use the other thread for your opinion bantering, this is to continue the simple topic of renting servers :D No playerlimit stuff.

Hell, sorry about that Wake. Just thinking and hit the "Reply" button accidentally.
*note to self: don't write here if you do not plan on setting up a server*

heh, no anyone is free to post in here wether they are renting a server or not, its just if anyone wanted to express their opinion on playerlimits it should go in the topic i split :P Because this one has a nice vibe without the opinion banter and id like it kept so :D

That's the one Quantum set up for me to fiddle with until Beta 3 comes out. But yeah I got access to that one to update/change things.

Is that a paid server? Like did you officially purchase/rent from them?

It's a live server, but I have not charged him for it.  I want to see the resource usage.

It's common for game mods to consume hordes of resources due to bad programming or what not.  But suprisingly, this Beta 1_1 server is running superbly. I must commend the people developing this project.

I can't wait to see the Orange Box version running live.

I can assure you that resources will not be consumed gregariously. I run my dedicated server, while playing the game, compiling a linux build in a virtualbox, and in Windows Vista all at the same time.

Memory Leaks have been identified and killed even in Valve's code.

With the Beta1 and Beta3 servers I've hosted I think the max ram I've hit is about 400MBs (and that's Windows, 2-3 GE:S Servers, and VNC all together) it uses VERY little ram. Even during the week of filling library with ammo boxes (http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/5919/hl22008081301334182vy9.jpg) Ram really didn't move, CPU yes but not Ram.

Send me an email (ges@lodle.net) and we'll give you a server prerelease of ges beta 3 (when it is ready) before we go live so you can test it out on your box.
