Title: Scaramanga strikes again - funhouse v4

hey guys,

yeah, I know I wrote that the third version of the funhouse would be the last version, but that was obviously a lie, because you know I can´t let it be, shame on me.  but the map' s really worth it. so here is the thing and some of you already knew: I´m currently working on the next version of the funhouse. and I think it will be just great. better lightning and atmosphere, better architecture, better map flow. I shortened most areas again, changed some room positions and I will try to use as many hi-res textures as possible. and let me tell you, the map's already an eyecatcher. in the end I want to have a mixture of the movie, the funhouse map from game rogue agent and my ideas. and of course I hope you´ll like it, too.

but enough stupid talk, here are the pictures. some of them are early WIP, but you get the idea. and I hope you´ll see the difference.

new room for scaramanga, the god of heaven and hell, filled with tons of seductive coins (you can see below). but still WIP. the invisible bridge is gone. (also deleted: the cemetery, the guillotine and the female scientist's prison in the cinema area)

and just one more thing: I want to give you the chance to work with me. so tell me your thoughts, your ideas, your criticism, your banking informations ;P. maybe somebody is also great at modeling and want to model the papercuts? (cowboy, mob, cadillac) or you have great (and free) music (maybe in the style of the 70s) which would fit perfectly? tell me, discuss with me, and again, give me your goddamn banking informations!     

and don't worry, this time the map's name will be cy_funhouse_v4

Looks good Cy, I was never a big fan of the invisible bridge and the new wooden one looks much better now. Keep up the good work!

Will you be modifying the spawn locations? I notice when I play the current version that the movie theater and bathrooms are hardly used for battle, because people don't spawn there often enough.

ok, I'll think about that. I like these fights in the cinema! two days ago one lucky bastard was standing on the terrace and killed me and another guy with one magnum bullet. pure movie magic!  ;-)

thanks troy, my thoughts exactly. maybe then the map will finally be available on the [1138] and the Wnx server. I know that only the maps with the best quality can make it there ...  ::)

quite a bit early but yes,
1. I reduced the height of the cowboy- mobster area & hall of mirrors and connected them again. they don´t look so huge anymore, more like in the rogue agent game.
2. new pictures of the james bond island in the cinema.
3. added a huge statue to the movie studio section, so that the players can jump off the tower without loosing health.
4. added some eyelats to the tower
5. reduced the height of the golden doors
6. changed/added some spawn locations
7. tried to make the training room completely turn red after a button switch, but it didn´t work out well.
8. changed the name of the map to ge_funhouse_v4

also thinking of papercut models for the cowboy, the cadillac, the mobsters, (like the alizee-papercut some time ago). maybe the mirrors from the hall of mirrors should be models, too. their bad reclections always annoy me. maybe someone could help me with that? would be truly awesome

1. I DO want the papercuts, but real prop_physik papercuts, not these damn alphachannel-tga-files. I want the papercuts to move a little bit when you shoot them, bouncing forward and backwards, like cowboy bashe's girlfriend you see here:

Hey I really like oyur funhouse. I'm happy that someone finally made it. As someone pointed out before, it would be awesome to be able to go outside, on the island. But that would be a huge thing to do. For the song, I think you should use a smooth instrumental version of the main song from the movie. Or just ask someone to make a cover of it. Anyway, your map is awesome!

actually version 1 you could go onto the island and hang out in Scarmanagas dining room...he is going to make a part 2 of Scarmangas Island....

Yeah I just saw the first screenshots on the level. Looks awesome despite it being in the early stages.

Cy, I really hope you do bring back the island and the dinning room. I would even suggest to keep only the best rooms from the funhouse so that including the beach and the dinning room wouldn't make it too big of a map. But if you do make a part 2 of just the island, I would suggest that you add the wrecked plane(how bond originaly reached the island), the laboratory kind of room(where the bond girl and the black engineer were during the gunfight), the room with the big lazer thing and even the solar panel on the top of the rock. Just some suggestions. Anyway I love your work and I'm eager to see the future versions.

I don´t know if I´m gonna finalize the second part. I concentrate on perfecting the funhouse and then I will see what to do. I have scaramanga's beach (dining room/backroom/training room/part of the beach with plane) right here, maybe someone else would like to finish it. I finish up my art studies soon, so there isn´t time for big things at the moment.

I would be happy to finish it after I'm done with MI6. Anyway I was planning on creating more "classic"(not n64 classic but classic as old movies maps) maps like Fort Knox, Blofeld's Volcano Lair, etc.. So Scaramanga's Island would be perfect for me. Although I'm really just a beginner in mapping, I might need some help.

progress is everything. I fly through the walls of my map and I try to give every single room a different feeling/mood. and I´m searching for the best hi-res textures I could find. light yellow wood planks, dark brown bricks. textures with rich colours; colours which transport a special technicolor-60s/70s feeling and make this funhouse, that was built with typical spy-fi cardboards, believable. it has to look cheap and it has to look good at the same time. like a "avengers"-episode.

and I don´t know which elements will be there at the end. I´m thinking about deleting the walk of fame, because it has nothing to do with scaramanga`s funhouse, it´s just a homage to the developers. I´m thinking about deleting my friends & myself, because we don´t fit in this mobster-place. scaramanga would hate us. and I´m also thinking about adding a labyrinth to the bottom of the pyramid room. the player would fall of the wooden bridge and maybe he would have the chance to come back again, searching for a way out of the labyrinth. I´m also very interested in adding some optical illusions. playing a map is like being a part of a movie. its all about entertaining the mind/ the heart through perception.

aww thats a shame as i like both of those- maybe you can turn the walk of fame into a deathtrap- with a flick of a switch in the control room one of the pictures will fall down and spawn a grenade damaging or killing any unfourtunate players...

i think it looks good with you and your friends in it- it gives it more depth to the map plus it will look odd if there is isnt anyone in that area

yeah, 

1. I continued working on some aesthetic issues, such as the training room. the shooting range is not a plain texture anymore, I changed the position of the gun locker and added hi-res carpet and wood textures:

2. I deleted the whole area with the walk of fame and the pictures of the villains. so when you walk through the front door, you´re already entering the cinema lobby.

3. I added a new area below the wood bridge. if you survive the downfall there are 4 doors at the bottom waiting. 3 of them lead to death, 1 brings you back on the top. here´s a first draft:

Shame, I liked that hallway. I'm loving the 4 doors at the bottom of the pit though but is falling down the pit not an instant kill? How are you supposed to get down there without no-clipping?

He probably removed the trigger from there, So you won't get killed anymore.

Those screens look great, mate, though I think the red texture on the toilet area needs something else to make it stand out. A better normal map (or a normal map, dunno if Source displays textures without normal maps).

you mean a specular map, right? thats one thing I have to learn in the next time, thats for sure. I have 2 or 3 textures which need some reflections, and the red one should be one of them. the red room has be perfect.

Well, now that I see the pic you posted, a specular map would help too. I didn't know that was your intention so I suggested a normal map first, to give it some texture (but not too much) but the specular map is the priority in there, it seems. One would really change the whole room for (much) better.

I decided to delete the whole tower, because this map doesn´t need an higher plane, there´s entertainment enough. shortened the hall of mirrors again, now its perfect. shortened the cowboy and the mobster place again. I don´t want the player to walk endless paths anymore. everything will be more compact now.

Not so sure about the upside bathroom. Maybe you need a room that has more objects in it, so when you walk in, the upside down effect is more apparent.

1. no, its just a nice picture, not from the real actor, but from a sculpture.
2. its a toilet for women, so you aren´t allowed to pee there anyway!

@emilia: good point. there are objects in it (toilets, sinks, pictures, mirrors), but not so many. though when you´re walking around, its enough to give you a pain in the head. I don´t want the player to vomit into the trash basket, so it has to be a single small room. either the ladies room or the storeroom behind the cinema bar. I´ll see what I can do.

@proxie: HAL is always watching us. he wants the player out of the map, so that his journey to jupiter and his important mission won´t fail

thanks for the kind words. I don´t know if its ready till 4.2 release, because there will be a long testing period this time, but maybe the funhouse can spice up a bit the waiting time between 4.2 and 4.3 ;-)   

additional notes: this version´s name will definetely be ge_funhouse v4. the musical side should offer something special. I plan to present you different variations for different areas of the map, just like in the movie. as far as I know terps4life90 already works on a piano version of the main theme"the man with the golden gun" which I would like to use for the saloon part for a start.

this dark room with the wooden bridge is still WIP. I´m not so sure about this one, but at the moment I can´t think of a better solution. the picture with the lights is an illusion, below there is the area with the 4 doors, where 3 doors leads to death and one door teleports you up again to the place you see on the left side of the picture.

Very, very good, that looks. I think that having three traps may be a bit overkill. One that actually kills you (immediately or if you don't think fast - activate a mechanism to get out of it) and other two that just damage you would be better, I think, along with the escape door.

The First Image looks really good i love the attention to detail and the ground looks good

The Quote in the second image- Winning isnt Everything makes me laugh and it suits the map

The Third image looks great with the area- it would be cool to hear some sort of street noises- like a police car in the background...just to add to the atomsphere....

The Fourth Image with the tv set is good- i love the image of scaramanga and  it would help players who want to try and make a sitcom machinima on the map.

the fifth image of the bonds is good- maybe have it with just Connery, Moore, Dalton and Brosnan...y'know like a tribute to the all bonds myth on the original n64 (alright secretly im not a fan of Craig or Lazenby) but its alright actually...is it going to replace the movie posters from the previous versions?

the sixth image...i agree we do need another shooting range- i wonder if there is a way that players could press a button and the cardboard cutouts pop up...could also aid players in causing a distraction...especially on gamemodes like Live and Let Die or LTK

the eigith image- the sliding door looks alright but im still a fan of the vents..i guess the sliding door would make things go smoother during ingame though the top window feels unnesseary.

the ninth image and last vent on the map looks good- i love the Aztec level feel-probarly due to the computer screens.

the eleventh image looks good- i love the new layout of the womens bathroom but the image of the woman pointing just doesnt suit it...besides the woman pointing slightly reminds me of Nicholas Cage's Y'dont say face.

the twelvth image of the womens bathroom is agian looks good- a real good 60's retro feeling

the last image of the Work in Progress with the dark woodern bridge visually looks amazing but realistically it doesnt suit it...what if you tried to use the invisible bridge version from early versions if not what about the older version of the bridge with the gold coins?

my original intention behind the doors lies in the fact, that the player should normally be dead after he has fallen off the bridge. but if he survives the damage he has one little chance left to rescue himself, so he has to choose his path wisely, otherwise he´s doomed. but it´s not a bad idea that one door should only cause damage. I will try some variations in the future test.

haha, never thought about that nicolas cage thing. but I LOVE this picture of the retro 50`s lady, pointing to the women´s toilet and telling the female players where to go. she looks so funny, innocent, pure and stupid. next to this woman there will also be a business man pointing in the other direction. :-)

hmmm here is another idea what about a glass bridge- like remember the community map: glass version of Cradle so i was thinking why not have that suspened above either:

A Swirling Vortex of DOOM!!!!...well players materalise in the room which there is only 1 deathtrap
A Lake of fog of DEATH!!!...well players appear in the room
A Image of A Scary (Eg: Clown, Scaramanga,  Michael Rosenberg, skelton) with its both open so players fall into its mouth and appear in the room.

well its an idea after all?

the walls i have a couple of ideas:

How about as a refrence to the shinning or the simpsons tree house of horror episode-  have blood smeared messages of (eg: GET OUT!!! KILL!!!!) and appearence of Hands and well other words...hehe maybe you could have Noodles Love Deborah written on the wall...

Another idea is using concept art from the goldeneye source team and place them on the wall

another idea is having images of Eyes looking at players...see L4d2's Haunted Manshion campagin

maybe redwood gothic feel?

I´m also curious what you think of the "puppets" like valentin (watching the movie screen), boris (sitting on the toilet) or alec (sitting in the ticket booth). sometimes people don´t understand what they´re doing in the map, especially when they´re shooting at them and see the "puppet's" blood.

I´m also thinking about the reasons why the former versions of the funhouse haven´t been played as much as I intended and had a discussion with E-S about that topic. he told me that the map´s still confusing and it´s design would scare off new players. but I tell you: the collocation of the single rooms hasn´t really changed since version 2 and I shortened or deleted long areas and made the connections between the settings more obvious. the map´s still bigger than the original map from rogue agent, but that´s because of the 16 players, which should play it without getting claustrophobic.  the player has the chance to explore my map, its full of details and references. if that scares off new players and if they don´t wanna try new things out- ok, then I can´t help them. the map and the design are different, but that doesn´t mean that the map´s bad. since 3 years I work on this map, its neither an uninspired quick shot nor a hangout beta. my heart and my soul are rooted in this map - for me it´s a serious map which is just fun to play on. and I hope the other players will get the same feeling.

Regarding the map: the screens look great. I really haven't had a chance of truly playing the map (v3 that is), with the exception of an odd couple of rounds quite some time ago and I don't remember on which server it was, but it was fun. it was confusing at first but casino was confusing at first for me as well and now I love that map to death. I can't wait to try this one out since its style is completely different from all the other maps. Two questions though: does it have 3 (or more) armour spawns? And no long corridors?

I really didn't mind the puppets. I may have shot one the first time but after that, it became a fun feature. If you could pose them more naturally, it would help: like Valentin lounging on the chair, or pose Boris so it looks like he is pushing hard.

@kraid: the doors are a screenshot from the original movie, so I think they´re ok. I would prefer golden door frame props, but I don´t have those.

@roger: thanks for the track. and I´m really excited for the piano only version.

nothing really new in the funhouse. I guess the major work is over and I`m still polishing things, adding some round architecture and searching for three special textures: an octagonal wood floor, a retro man pointing to toilet and a better (more movie-like) wood wall texture for the training room. not so easy.

meanwhile I program my own bot for the funhouse. and what can I say, he´s even able to talk! great! but he´s still talking weird stuff with an english accent and has some problems with the rcp90, so I have to change some brain cells in his head I guess. here´s a video of that bot talking.

For several reasons:
1. This guy is looking for attention, doing a bot of him would give him this.
2. You would use "his content" again, even if it's just his stupid voice saying lot of BS.
3. And most important: i don't wanna hear this stupid stuff when i play GES.

But the general idea of speaking bots i like.

Imagine a special gamemode:

1 Player (Bond with only a PP7) against 1 (Scaramanga) Bot with the AuG.

Starting a round on easy difficulty.
There'll be only 7 shot in his pistol, but he can pick up ammo within the map.

Each time the bot is defeated, another round will start with the bot on a higher difficulty.

The player will earn score depending on how quick the bot was eliminated, how many shots were required, what difficulty the bot was on, etc.

Maybe each hit on the bot will give instantly scores depending on the hitzone.

When the player got killed, it'll decrease score.

Round ends when the timer runs out or the bot is killed. I'd say 3 or 5 minutes each round, maybe increasing round time on higher difficulties.

If the timer runs out, the next round will be the same difficulty again.
If the bot was killed it'll be on a higher difficulty.

When the bot was killed on the highest difficulty or the max. ammount of rounds (maptime) has expired, the match will end and the player will get his final score.

The goal is simply beating highscores.

As for the voice, i'd say beside scaramanga throwing demotivative comments and laughther onto the player, he could introduce the match with his well known sentence. I think you know which one (7 vs 1).

This gamemode could be altered to play against Baron Samedi on Egypt too. Or Alec on Cradle, or Xenia in Jungle, or Jaws in Aztec.

thanks :-D I can see the end of the tunnel now. its very cool to see bots running around in your own map and I can tell you one thing: now its much easier for me to get a feeling for the flow and the spawning points. and some things just won´t work with bots. the funhouse has a lot of interactive gimmickries, so I have to come to a compromise.
after 4.2 release I´ll post another test version for the beta testers and a few chosen people. then I fix possible issues, so that it´s stable for the community. and I´m sure there will be an future event which features the new funhouse, maybe a month after 4.2 release, who knows.

I understand. I don't really mind the darkness, though. I just thought you'd also make your map brighter overall just like every other map in GES (well, the official ones, at least), are aiming for so the player torch is phased out eventually (I think I read about that somewhere).  It does force you to keep your eyes peeled for any shadows moving around and that is a nice challenge.

thanks :-) there are tons of details in there. and good news all you happy people, I´m finally pleased with my black and white room. why? because I changed the design to make it more bot friendly. now there´s a raised platform in the center of the room and two small chequered bridges are connected with that platform. if you fall down you´re instantly dead and you don´t have the chance to choose the right door which possibly teleports you back to the top again. but of course you will have the opportunity to move the two bridges at the press of a button so that your enemies possibly tumble in the black abyss. here´s a screenshot:

That's a shame, those doors sounded like a fun concept. Still though if it makes the map more bot friendly then I guess it's for the greater good. The room still looks nice though especially the checkered bridges. Keep up the good work man, hopefully not much longer to go now :-)

I thought of something that I liked in a previous version.  For your traps, before you could shoot the buttons and they would work.  I liked that before you wouldn't have to stand in front of them to get them to work.

ah thanks, I almost forgot this feature. I changed it in the last version because I thought people would shoot at the buttons all the time. but I think you´re right. it was a nice feature, so it will be in version 4 again.

but seriously, the map is almost finished. I´m planing to release the second test version for beta testers /developers / chosen  people (who would like to?) this weekend. then, after the bug report I am going to fix the stated issues and then the map will be released to the public.

after release I will post the vmf file of the funhouse AND also the vmf file of the fragmented island part. I´m very happy how the progress of funhouse turned out and after such a long time I feel I´m personally done with it. but I think some skilled guy (like luchador for example) could add some stuff, which is beyond my capabilities as a mapper (such as special models, like better cowboy / mob papercuts / mirror models in the hall of mirrors). there's always room for improvements. and maybe one day it could be an official map, who knows?

the second map (the island part) works as a good training lesson, to learn some basic mapping skills. the living room is almost done, but the beach needs a lot of environment work, mostly by adding displacements.

Congrats Cy, glad to hear it's finally ready to be released. I'll be away at a wedding though in England next Saturday so I won't be able to attend that event but I'm sure I'll get a chance to play it someday. Kudos on all your hard work and dedication to this map through its various releases

Yeah I just saw the first screenshots on the level. Looks awesome despite it being in the early stages.

Cy, I really hope you do bring back the island and the dinning room. I would even suggest to keep only the best rooms from the funhouse so that including the beach and the dinning room wouldn't make it too big of a map. But if you do make a part 2 of just the island, I would suggest that you add the wrecked plane(how bond originaly reached the island), the laboratory kind of room(where the bond girl and the black engineer were during the gunfight), the room with the big lazer thing and even the solar panels (http://www.shinesolar.net) on the top of the rock. Just some suggestions. Anyway I love your work and I'm eager to see the future versions.
it was pretty awesome game for sure.. I have not played it for sometime so is there any updates or latest version?
