This actually made me a little emotional, used to be here multiple times a day. Take care, and thanks for the fond memories, I'm going to go look through my old posts now.

I thought I had turned off posting but I guess not... oh well.
I agree with Matteobin's points and more. I feel like the loss of the forums is a loss of a place that is actually "ours", and the death of one more piece of the "old" Internet before everything started shifting toward centralized platforms. But the unfortunate thing is that, even if I did those things -- mailing lists, IRC, etc -- nobody would use them. The forums are an example of that. I'm glad you mentioned Web scrapers. That was part of the motivation as well, to the extent that "okay, this is becoming a lot of effort for something no-one uses". The forums were essentially being DDoSed by thousands of IPs aggressively scraping them in a coordinated fashion, a problem shared by many other small sites. Nonetheless, I do appreciate your shared preference for decentralized platforms. |

This really stumps me down.
To me Discord isn't an option for several reasons: * privacy issues, * my preference towards free and open source software, * and last but not least - a huge distaste towards shitty and resource hog Electron apps. If that's the future, I want my past back! However I do understand that running a dynamic website like this forum can be challenging and time consuming, when one has to face Supposed Intelligence scrapers all the time. I will sorely miss this forum. My biggest complain isn't that we lose the forum, but that we lose the only independent communication system we had. I know mailing lists may seem very out of date, but IMHO you should thinking about setting up one. I could help you out, I'm a very good UNIX and GNU/Linux sysadmin. We should have at least one independent communication system, even a simply info email address could do it. Obviously a mailing list has the HTML public archive as an added bonus. One could even set up a very simple bridge between Discord and a standard IRC channel. That wouldn't be half bad too! Sorry for the rant, I will always love GoldenEye: Source. <3 |

Every communications medium has its heyday, and it's good to know that the GoldenEye: Source community and the active project itself will long outlive the once-vibrant forums as we transition to a different age. It's wonderful that the content and thoughts expressed here over many years will also be preserved as an important part of the history of our community.
!gesrocks Good evening. |

Goodbye, sweet prince.
These forums were almost as important as the game itself for me. The decision makes perfect sense though, and despite my inactivity, it still feels a little bittersweet to know this place is shutting down. I will always have good memories from these forums. Thankfully, the crazy stories of Basstronix will be immortalized through archiving this place ![]() |

Hi all,
The team has made the difficult decision to archive the GoldenEye: Source Forums, effective 07 September 2026. Our Rationale This is not a decision we make lightly – in fact, several of us on the team prefer traditional forums to modern platforms like Discord. Because of this, efforts have been made in recent years to re-open the Forums for new and existing community members while also keeping the spammers at bay, which is no small feat in 2026. However, the Forums have seen decreasing activity when compared to platforms like Discord. For example, this year the Forums have seen 10 total posts and 1 new topic. Forum posts by year. See if you can spot when Discord came out. It can be easy to attribute the lack of activity to the lack of new releases, and if you were to tell me that you would be partly correct. However, as you can see in the chart above, less than 1 year after the release of version 5.0, the Forums saw activity levels lower than the 4.2 era (2012 - 2016) despite the larger player base. There is no doubt many on the GE:S team and in the community will miss the Forums, but it doesn’t make much sense to continue hosting, checking, and moderating a platform that is largely unused in the modern day. Preserving The Mod’s Legacy I have personally seen many communities come and go, with some unceremoniously shuttering their forums overnight. Rest assured that we won’t let that happen here. The GoldenEye: Source Forums are special. Although unused now, they contain two decades of modding history that is important to many. On 07 September 2026, the Forums will become read-only. Some time after, they will be replaced with a static website, ensuring that part of GE:S history remains preserved for years (or decades) to come. In Conclusion We laid out our plans and our reasoning above. Let us know what you think. If you have any memories or anecdotes about the forums, feel free to drop a line below. Regards, soupcan |

Update: This has been fixed in the January 21 Steam update.
If you were opted into the Steam client beta because of this, you may now opt out of the beta and continue enjoying GoldenEye: Source. |

The beta can be enabled within the client, instructions here: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/276C-85A0-C531-AFA3 Absolutely spot on... thank you, it really is much appreciated, after almost 5 years of shooting colleagues and ex-colleagues on a weekly basis we were wondering how else we would appear sociable! |
