Title: [VALVE UPDATE] ATTENTION README **FIXED**
Post by: killermonkey on February 17, 2009, 12:52:14 am
Everyone, Valve recently pushed an update involving fixes to the TF2 dedicated server and other server related things. Please wait until the dust cloud settles before posting bugs involving this, thanks

Stay tuned.

Current bugs involve error messages like: "Invalid Steam key size" and "STEAM validation rejected"

Valve - One step forward, two steps back, then slip and fall down the stairs.

Here is my recount I heard from Valve of the events that took place:

1800 EST - Lead programmer at Valve issues the force update
1830 EST - Force update complete, lead programmer sits back and idles in his glory

*MEANWHILE - 1840 EST*
//ACTUAL CONVERSATION WITH VALVE EMPLOYEE//
[21:19:38] killermonkey01: oh man I bet Gabe was eating a jelly donut playing GE:S
[21:19:42] killermonkey01: then he went to change servers
[21:19:44] killermonkey01: and was like
[21:19:46] killermonkey01: WTF!
[21:19:51] killermonkey01: and called his top programmer
[21:19:57] killermonkey01: and choked him through the phone
[21:20:03] killermonkey01: then he finished his donut

1900 EST - Servers across the world start failing, CSS, DOD, TF2, everyone who has jacked out of the steam network cannot jack back in
1930 EST - Sentinals are released to clean up the rest of the horde
2000 EST - The Earth Stands Still, in an eerie silence, as Gabe steps up to the microphone at the State of Valve address and announces that all video gaming has ceased to function because Steam is blocking all of the connections.
2030 EST - Steam starts to evolve, now everyone's computer is a slave to the Steam empire, GE:S suddenly starts working again, the only game available in the world.
2100 EST - The world calms down as they enter a new era in gaming...

I mean this is completely plausible, but then again, it could have been some jack ass tripped over the power cord to the logon and authentication server at Valve Headquarters...

Updated and restarted servers, so now on the client side it says they're LAN servers; on the server-side status reports they're insecure. Progress?

They always manage to screw things up. But on the other hand, they make great games, so it somewhat balances things.

KM, I think you could go and write the script for the next Terminator movie. They'd have to ditch the current one because you one is so much better.

They need to fire themselves and hire KM and I.  We'd have it learning at a geometric rate in two months. Learning... to be awesome!

Just chill; if Steam is in a state of flux, the email is probably bogus, too.  Save it, of course, but give them time to wake up, feed Gabe, and get to work. It is 4AM over there, you realize.

How irritating... at least they had good reasons... demoman got nerfed and an exploit that allowed you to change loadout mid-combat was fixed. tbh im in favour of Valves fixes :P

Hopefully it wont cause too much hassle :)

I guess Valve figured since the analog TV shutdown was postponed, they had to do something to fill the void.  ;D

Valve just released a patch to fix the bugs. When the servers update it should be good again.

They changed all Steam IDs from STEAM_0: to STEAM_1

"Some peoples IDs aren't 1, STEAM_2:0:, STEAM_1:1:, etc. but using the steam_1 method will fix most, if you want an even easier way just remove the STEAM_0:0: part from every ID in the database and only use the unique numbers at the end. As an example my STEAMID was STEAM_0:0:13214556, it is now STEAM_1:0:13214556, removing the STEAM_0:0: part would leave you with 13214556 which is still a unique number. I believe this is the method the statistics system uses to" - Some Guy Named WildFire

TF2 and DoD:S are using the new STEAM_1 ID and CS:S is using the old STEAM_0 ID. This means each of the 600+ people has to have a SECOND ID added for each person (a STEAM_1 and a STEAM_0 ID).

It probably has to do with Steam Cloud.
L4D uses Steam Cloud and has STEAM_1 SteamIDs
TF2 now uses Steam Cloud and has STEAM_1

STEAM_1:0:1337 and STEAM_0:0:1337 are the same.
STEAM_0:1:1337 and STEAM_0:0:1337 are different steam accounts.

I saw this on the Steampowered forums.

I'm confused. Is all this why I'm only able to see 3 servers? (Euro servers in which I ping 300... ugh.)

I'm starting to get GE:S withdrawals.  :'(

+ these 3 servers are quite bugged, since the kills with certain weapons wouldn't be counted (I still need some kills with the AR33 and every type of mines and didn't get any kill counted although I killed many people using these weapons)

Here's what I've got, maybe one of you can make something of this:

Code: [Select]
Unable to load Steam support library.
This server will operate in LAN mode only.

This is after doing hldsupdatetool -command update -game tf on the server. Server won't connect to VAC, and rejects clients (pretending to be a LAN server).

Like our mod, any server that chooses not to auto-update can still host because of course they didnt get the broken server update. So i assume from each OB mod around 5 or so servers are up.

No. The Valve update only affects dedicated servers, not the client software. If you can't launch the game, that sounds like a local problem. Could be any number of things, but the update isn't one of them.

I started up an un-updated server (up-to-date 7 February) and it runs fine, the only problem is you still can't connect to it due to the Steam key size error.

Could be that all the servers going on out there are listen servers?

Yeah I've got them up-to-date. Someone had posted before that servers that hadn't been updated would work but no dice. All good now though with what steven posted.

I'm not sure if its just the TLP servers, but achievements aren't tracked anymore. Is this because of the workaround?
