Title: Community Project 1 : Monitor Images
Post by: JcFerggy on June 03, 2010, 01:06:14 am
Today I would like to announce GoldenEye: Source's first Community Project! The goal behind the project is to make monitor images. Some of our current ones don't really reflect the game or the time period the movie was set in.

The goal is to recreate the ones from the game, or make some new ones based off of period operating systems (Win3/Win95, DOS, or Boris's one used in the movie). Here are some examples we came up with. The cube and the multiple images both reflect monitors from GE64. To have something from now but look like it could have been there before, the steam pic could replace our current one.

(http://i44.tinypic.com/20k6rmp.jpg) (http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/9954/monitor.gif) (http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/5106/steam.png)

The rules of the community project are simple.

1. Make a 128x128 or 256x256 image, either animated or static, that would be placed on the monitors around each map.

2. No disturbing or violent images will be accepted.

3. All entries have to be posted here in this topic.

Winners will get their name put in the credits of the mod in our next release. We hope to see many entries!

I personally want the skate border one. Best one from GE64.

This isn't too violent, is it? I imagine it would make sense for the Russians to be told.

One thing I don't know if people notice is that we will actually try our best to have Russian in Russian areas..

Try  "убить этого человека"
or...  "стрелять без предупреждения"  (shoot on sight)

even "Проникнувший"  infiltator

That's a good point. Here's an updated bilingual version:

I'd imagine pixelating it, maybe , maybe making it all green, and add some scrolling scanlines to it.

Worked on a few today.

These ones are based off Boris's screen in the Control center during the climax of the movie:

Other misc ones:

I will work on some more soon.

Static is something I've been hoping for as well.

I like your idea in general.
Maybe you might want to add something "to be seen" there.
Like mines laid out in the final room of facility or on some technical equipment or some player as Bond passing by, maybe even shooting at Ourumov or having the scene change between several rooms. Of course you could also combine those, so it wouldn't be Bond shooting Ourumov ten times in a row. ^^
Explosions are nice on video screens, too.

Also it would be cool if the maps had cameras hanging at those positions, so you might find some convenient maps/spots to make those scenes.
Last thing is that green camera objective thing in the middle - I don't know about that, but I guess it would look better without it.

Cheers, I'll have a proper version when I log over to Windows later so I can get some screenshots.

I've just edited it quickly with Russian text, removed the middle green aim bit and add a lolplosion.

I'd suggest using a picture of an official map, not a third party map.
Title: Re: Community Project 1 : Monitor Images
Post by: killermonkey on June 10, 2010, 02:04:05 am
Wouldn't it be "recording" not transmitting.

JCFerggy is onto something, this "camera view" idea is a great way to sneak some funny elements between frames (and NOT a random bad looking explosion of a spray brush). Put Bond in there wiring up the jeep with a remote mine or Boris doing his "I am INVINCIBLE" pose. Garry's mod would be helpful with this.

Since I never really worked with animated gif images myself I have to ask: how many pictures can you transform into one single gif? But I know you can set the pictures per second somewhere - how (in terms of "is it still practicable to do that, i.e. would it take too much memory or slow the game down significantly?")  would its size influence the game if you made a looping gif with >= 24 fps and a lenght of like 20 or 30 seconds? (meaning 480 or 720 pictures)

It's just... the camera is still a little jumpy for the latest in - even russian - technology, let alone for security equipment that's used by the Janus group.
Title: Re: Community Project 1 : Monitor Images
Post by: kraid on June 10, 2010, 08:23:36 am
Framerate and duration are far to high.
Even with a compressed 128x128 image which is aproximatly 10kb the final animated texture would be 7200 kb (roughly 7MB) for your 30 seconds texture.
That's far to much for something like a monitor screen.

Also, please don't use gif to export the images.
Rather do a series of single frames in .tga or other lossless image formats.
Name your pictures like texture0000.tga, texture0001.tga, ...

Cheers, guys. It was just an example. The explosion was just a placeholder. And I agree with the funny element thing, which is what I'm mainly aiming for.

I've got a new one in the works, just bit tied up with packing for going home from Uni.

I did wonder about that, I'll upload my targas, I guess .gif is just useful for a preview in the thread.

Decided to remake the original N64 monitor image of the guy talking. Used an old soviet cap I own and an overcoat for the photos. The Russian translates into "Transmission: Captain Alexander."

Hmmm...Pirate looks okay, but i'd say make the views complete views of each side and make the display time of each longer.

As with the commander, it needs a few filters to make the transmission look low quality (lines going across the screen and whatnot), because right now it looks like some weird advertisement that no-one understands.

And Euphonic, if you could get an actual Tiger helicopter blueprint, it would be even better. Do as E-S said and add some scan lines and some noise filter to the first one.

Haha man I love that hat! Is there any chance you could do it with more than two shades of green? See how the original talking guy looked:

Also I'd use a sans-serif font for an old computer screen. Don't worry about the scanlines I'll take care of those, but you could add some noise or pixelation.

Also, nobody make the bar graphs because I already did  :P

Euphonic was trying to do this guy:
not the other one.

But sure, there are a few things which could be changed to improve this sequence.
Right now it looks like a Poster of Ché.
Please change it back to 8bit greyscale and add a background.

DO NOT ADD SCAN LINES AND BARS TO THE FINAL PRODUCT (.gif is fine though)

Those will be added with proxies in the material to make it completely random and consistent with the other monitors.

Here's a nice console scroller!
Hope you guys like it!

EDIT: Removed a line of pixels that over-scrolled

is 256x256 high enough resolution? I mean, the player will probably be pretty close to some of the monitors.
I suppose through heavy FX such as scanlines and noise it could be OK...

Well ya that, but it would be cool to re-create the image to have it clearer and in higher quality.
Title: Re: Community Project 1 : Monitor Images
Post by: Xebozone on June 30, 2010, 07:12:00 am
I made a quick replacement for the image using a real world map vector and curves in photoshop.
The original file is 6264x4161 pixels.

It could possibly be animated. I should probably watch the movie to get a better idea :P. I based this purely on the screenshot and the vector map

(attached, login to see)

EDIT: I attached another image with a more pale yellow (closer to the screenshot) and less screen glow from the map to make it more readable. I like the 2nd one better

BTW, I have an entire world map (only this area has red/cyan coloring though as I do not know what the rest should have), and I could probably animate it if need be.

Looks good, but I guess the black version of the symbol in the background is supposed to be a a shadow of the one in the foreground, suggesting the light source is in front. Yet the shadow is smaller than the original, which makes no sense because basically the shadow is about the size of the original when the original is directly on the background and bigger if the original has some distance to the background. And of course the shadow would surround the symbol in at least every direction (left, right, above, below) but one.

Title: Re: Community Project 1 : Monitor Images

Bottom one looks fine to me shadow wise. If the lighting setup involved multiple lights facing inwards towards the center of the object you would see shadows similar to that; more rough of course but it communicates fine.

Good work.
Title: Re: Community Project 1 : Monitor Images
Post by: coolDisguise on October 08, 2010, 04:54:48 pm
Then again if there are multiple light sources the shadow would be looking different when the symbol is facing sidewards. (and the the shadow wouldn't be as dark)

I never said I didn't like it, it's just that I thought that point was strange about it.

I think a non-shadowed version of the first(old grainy version) would be sexy

Sanserif Version (taking Mangley's advice)

Translates into "Shipping Manifest" and is then broken down into the name of what is being shipped, its shipping code and the date. Look specifically in the second to last line of the middle column ; )

All of the dates are around the fall of the Soviet Union due to the game description of the level saying it's a disused military depot.

Translates into a description of the paint on a shipping container. The warning is that it is not protected against corrosion.

Non-pixelated version

Translates into "Attention! ... Certain barrels explode when shot! Exercise extreme caution! ... Janus - Helping build a safe work environment.

I wouldn't call 18 hours a necro-post. ::)
Well, when I was preparing that message, it was really a necropost.
Anyway.
The main problem is declensions, I'll mention them later, but there are some serious errors as well
First: Chamber in case of rocketry means шахта, as far as I remember.
Second: The word "code" is almost the same in russian, код. Well, in that case, of course.
Third: Regardless of the idea, exclamation marks are NOT ALLOWED in the beginning of the sentence. NEVER. Especially when you talk about military applications.
And now the time for declensions.
The word "rocket" is she in russian, so the status of the rocket - готова or you are allowed to use neuter gender: "готово"
Rocket initiated, but ракета инициирована or to be more correct - готова к запуску.
Am I allowed to contribute more?

Just for fan I made this screens. This is heroes of Russian YouTube Poop.

This is "Shutup-man". A face who appears out of nowhere with a sound, "Shut up" immediately stop the action, like King's "ENOUGH".

Translate:
"Заткнись" - Shut up

Example on 1:45 and : : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxN9VifCnro

"Dangerous Boy" Опасный поцык - primary hero of all RYTP. In video you can see the 13 years boy who put on "a coll guy" and threatens the operator.

Approximate translate:
"Хули тут так мало?!" - That's not f*cking enough
"Это наша точка, блять!" - This is our spot, yo
"Ты выёбывался - я тебе пизды дал!" - I owned you for being douche
"Ты на пенёк сел" - You set on
"Должен был косарь отдать!" - You should give me COSAR (1000 Rubles)
"А тут хуй ли так мало, урод, блядь, ты!?" - Why there's not enough, fcking freak, you?
"Ммм?! - MMM?!
"Уёбок!" - FAG
"Ди (Иди) нахуй, пидор, бля!" - F*ck yourself you friggin fag
"Как уебу, сука!" - I will own you, bitch!
