hey people,
last week I fooled around with the hammer editor again and ge_train plopped out!
ok, seriously now, I saw a video of the train-map on youtube and I thought: this mod hasn't got a train-map yet. why the fuck, why? Well... I could do it!
so I started working on it and let me tell you something: after the crazy funhouse map, the work on ge_train feels like holiday. I really enjoy mapping again, it's great fun.
So, this is it, I want to create a very classical train map, nothing big, but a solid base for a nice little multiplayer match. It should be done in 2 or 3 months. the funhouse made me fast.
and here are some early WIP screenshots for you. and don't mind the textures, most of them are placeholders for the grand finale.

Is that concept art of what the original level's design was supposed to be like or what you would like the map in source to be like? O_o
Those textures are placeholders? The passenger carriage looks perfectly accurate, don't see how you would change it except maybe make different variations of the carts? :o

Can do this with the ge_gameplay_info entity and trigger on match end :-D
And Major, OMG, that concept artist was fucking amazing. It's too bad his talent was too good and he got sucked up in the industry :-)

Oh yeah, sorry i blanked out about your post last night, i was kinda fucked up lol.
Also, the photo came from a project that Partiota was working on, but the textures are from the original game.

next steps:
-starting and creating the last wagon 6/6 (maybe with ourumovs dead body lying on the ground?)
-creating area portals
-creating a streaming texture which helps to mediate the feeling of speed (for shutters)
-placing bots to get some company
-searching for proper textures (carpet swirls, wallpapers, upholstery shit)

My only suggestion would be to use a lighter coloured wood on the ceiling in your first screenshot. As the rest of the textures are lighter colours, the dark ceiling feels like it pushing down on you, making it feel quite claustrophobic in an already limited space.
Otherwise, great ;)

Yes, please add bots, that's one thing I hate on most custom maps, no bots spawn. I think the only custom map that I have that does spawn bots is Siberia, but the map is huge and bots get stuck in some places (may or may not be from 4.2.3 messing with the spawn system because some get stuck in the ground so that is probably from the update), but like the area where you exit Surface 1...that tower thingy that if you shoot the locks off you are teleported to the bunker entrance in the custom map, bots will spawn there and just stand there and not know how to use the ladder to leave. There are a lot of cool custom maps that I like to play on, and not always be able to play online so I get lonely.
Map looks great so far, and can't wait for it's release. I like the idea of Ourumov's dead body being in the last cart. lol

Good work dude. is getting very good. do not forget to adjust the wall textures. in the green. and it would leave open that part of the driver of the train. will be cool to play this map. good luck 8)

yeah, busy days at the moment. but most parts (wagons) of the map are finished. I still need some texturing to do. this will take a while, because the train has some weird carpet / upholstery patterns which are hard to find / create / steal ;)

I understand you're probably keeping the scale as close as possible to 1:1 to preserve the "classic" nature, and perhaps I'm just nitpicking, but the benches and couches always looked kind of odd, to me. Even in the original, it looked as though they were made for people with really tall backs and tiny butts. However, it's nothing more than a minor blemish on an otherwise perfect map ;)
Aside from that, everything is extremely solid. Those textures look beautiful! I'm sensing you're almost done, so keep it up :D

I also think about two versions of the map, the first with the traveling claustrophobic train you all know from the n64 version and a second, opened version with a non moving wrecked train standing on the tracks, so you would be able to walk in and outside, climb on the roof and fire in the interior from above. I think this would create VERY interesting matches

There are so many more songs that need to be made for Source. I mean there's over 20 levels and all of them have a X version (except Citadel but Perimeter can count as that). We really don't have half the soundtrack yet, though it feels bigger with most of the songs having atleast two versions from different composers. lol

Yes torn's Train, and i know its not finished, But the version i got from him looked pretty good. It just didn't have the roof access or the moving environment.

Yeah looks pretty good, but it's not classic since it will have the roof access while moving and "other" things (:)). Cy's will be completely classic, as far as I know.

the map is ready for testing. I just need to do some compiling stuff. I'll post the download link in the beta testing section soon

happy new year! I just want to let you know that the testing phase of the train was very successful.
here are some things I fixed:
-fixed the material surface information
-fixed an issue with the yellow coach
-reduced the light
-replaced a dead spawnpoint
-placed a metal door at the very beginning of the map
-darkened the yellow stripes
-fixed a seam in the blue wall
-rotated the brake units, so they stand close to the wall
-closed doors have no handle anymore
-the glass on the moving doors of the cabines is breakable now
I won't take long til you can play the map. stay tuned

after the session I fixed some problems:
- approached the ctk spawnpoints, because it was really hard to reach them
- the last door has no golden handle anymore
- included Mesmonium's awesome train music
- found a way to make the brake units explode.
