Wow...
« on: August 27, 2007, 01:52:24 am »

Hi there,

Allow me to first congratulate everybody involved in the design, development, testing and support of this mod. It truly is a credit to your patience, workmanship and talent that you've created something as impressive as GoldenEye Source. I think it's great this project exists - not simply because you guys are bringing back one of the best multiplayer games ever made to old and new gamers alike - but also the spirit in which the mod is being developed.

Okay, so I don't want to go overboard with the praise, but I actually bought Half Life 2 (lost the CD) just to try this mod out, and I'm not disappointed one bit. Everybody I've showed the mod to so far has been really excited by what they've seen, and can't wait to try it for themselves. I've read a small minority of less-than-helpful posts criticising certain elements of the game, but considering the numbers of people involved and beta stage it's at, it's great even at this stage how you've managed to capture so many details of the original game, and for me at least, it felt like I was playing GoldenEye again. And thats an awesome feeling.

Anyway, there isn't much point to this post other than to thank you guys for your work and say that if there's any way to support the project, I'll do what I can to help.

Thanks,
Dan.

Most of the complaints come from the fact that Alpha 1.1, ignoring the non-respawning armors in Egy and Caves, and the wall spawn in Egy, didn't play like an Alpha, or a Beta.  It played like a release candidate that only had five guns and five maps.

Beta added plenty of media, but the game code, thanks partly to the face-palming changes between HL2 and Source Base engines, practically fell apart.  Most of the gameplay issues we see in Beta is due to just that.  Granted, the weapon spawn junk was purely due to a lack of testing, but that sort of thing happens.

Glad you enjoy it, here's to bigger and better in the future.

Should've stayed on HL2.  Localhost would be broken, but it's broken for CSS so whatever; and if Valve wants people to migrate to their crappy Base crap, then they should make the crap at least work the same as the old engine.

Welcome to the forums DanUK.

Spoiler for Hiden:

EDIT: I was only joking. I do agree about what you say about him. He does give some interesting criticism about GE:S but I guess sometimes he takes matters a little bit too seriously (which in some cases isn't a bad thing)

Thanks Lággy - just one quick question.

In terms of the legality of the mod, I know there are a few issues regarding licensing of the brand & level design...etc... but do Valve or any of the companies know what you guys are doing?

I suppose in an ideal world, seeing as programmers & licensing are issues for you, Valve / Rare / Activision would realise the potential of GoldenEye Source and perhaps allow it's development, or maybe even help you guys out (i.e. lend you a few programmers!). It'd be fantastic PR for Valve, a commercial success for the licensors (IMHO) on a brand that is no longer making them money, and provide a potential solution to those game developers complaining about the exorbitant cost of developing games.

Also, with the various companies approval, you could allow for donations to help fund the development of the mod (seeing as the end product would eventually be commercialised) and reward you for all the hard work you're putting in. I know I'd be more than happy to give a few pounds to secure the future of GES!

Anyway, I know these things aren't nearly that simple... but it's fun to theorise sometimes.

Cheers,
Dan.

P.S
Spoiler for Hiden:
:D In regards to 'Waits for The Beatles pwn j00!', I've seen some of his posts and I think his criticism is misplaced - he genuinely seems to want to help and obviously can't wait for the final release - but probably needs to understand that nobody ever got motivated by someone telling them how bad they are! If he was a little more tactful and a little less childish, he'd probably get a lot more respect from other users and certainly more attention would be given to his sometimes valid opinions.

We know that many of the companies that have a stake in the Bond license are aware of us and this mod. We'd never get that sort of recognition or assistance due to what a legal knot Goldeneye 64 is though.

Yeah, it's a shame that technicalities like licensing should get in the way of developing & selling a game that people actually want, after all, it's in the interests of everybody involved. Interestingly, Nintendo are looking to bring GE64 to the Wii, but are fighting Microsoft and Activision, who obviously own all the original game & distribution rights. I'd have thought they'd be loving the prospect of bringing a PC-based alternative to market, particularly as both companies are strategic partners.

There's EA to consider (007 rights owners), however I remember 'GoldenEye: Rogue Agent' was released to some pretty bad reviews, criticising EA for simply trying to capitalise on Rare's success. A mod like this would certainly redeem their credibility for publishing good games based on the GoldenEye franchise, and the extra cash wouldn't hurt either.

Edit: Turns out EA don't own the rights any more, just Microsoft & Activision.

Like I said, from a PR and financial profitability perspective, I think it's a slam dunk for all the license holders & would be an intriguing example of how great games can be made on a budget and with co-studio support.

Guess the pie's gotta be cut into several pieces, but who wouldn't rather have a slice than nothing at all?

Man, I gotta stop playing GE:S...

Dan.

it would be nice to have everyone come to the table, and just share the profits, cause theres a lot of money that could potentially be made.

but for now we are happy sitting in legal limbo. and hopefully we wont ever get the axe.

Yeah, that's cool - so long as you guys carry on what you're doing, there will be a lot of happy people out there.

And while there may be certain licensing issues, when the game nears completion, there's only three companies to persuade that it's a good idea.... challenging, but definately not impossible.

Cheers,
Dan.
