Hi all,

The team has made the difficult decision to archive the GoldenEye: Source Forums, effective 07 September 2026.

Our Rationale

This is not a decision we make lightly – in fact, several of us on the team prefer traditional forums to modern platforms like Discord. Because of this, efforts have been made in recent years to re-open the Forums for new and existing community members while also keeping the spammers at bay, which is no small feat in 2026.

However, the Forums have seen decreasing activity when compared to platforms like Discord. For example, this year the Forums have seen 10 total posts and 1 new topic.

It can be easy to attribute the lack of activity to the lack of new releases, and if you were to tell me that you would be partly correct. However, as you can see in the chart above, less than 1 year after the release of version 5.0, the Forums saw activity levels lower than the 4.2 era (2012 - 2016) despite the larger player base.

There is no doubt many on the GE:S team and in the community will miss the Forums, but it doesn’t make much sense to continue hosting, checking, and moderating a platform that is largely unused in the modern day.

Preserving The Mod’s Legacy

I have personally seen many communities come and go, with some unceremoniously shuttering their forums overnight. Rest assured that we won’t let that happen here.

The GoldenEye: Source Forums are special. Although unused now, they contain two decades of modding history that is important to many.

On 07 September 2026, the Forums will become read-only. Some time after, they will be replaced with a static website, ensuring that part of GE:S history remains preserved for years (or decades) to come.

Goodbye, sweet prince.
These forums were almost as important as the game itself for me. The decision makes perfect sense though, and despite my inactivity, it still feels a little bittersweet to know this place is shutting down. I will always have good memories from these forums.
Thankfully, the crazy stories of Basstronix will be immortalized through archiving this place

Every communications medium has its heyday, and it's good to know that the GoldenEye: Source community and the active project itself will long outlive the once-vibrant forums as we transition to a different age. It's wonderful that the content and thoughts expressed here over many years will also be preserved as an important part of the history of our community.
