Custom Avatars?

Hey, I was just wondering how do you make your own avatar? In my profile settings when I click "Specify avatar by URL" and give a link to my jpg that I want to be my avatar, it doesnt accept it. Instead, I get this error message: "The following errors occurred when trying to save your profile:
The avatar you have selected is either too large or not an avatar." What do I do?
